I have put up a new webpage with rare hits collection of Maestro Ilayaraaja. I will try to put those songs that are either not commonly found nor available in other TFM pages. Please visit:

As we talked about encoding today early morning, I decided to again show you how a song can be encoded by uploading Song # 250. Did you see how beautifully the bass and violin interludes have been encoded in the ordinary Real Audio???? Moreover the voice rendition is very good in this audio file. The song (which is little bit long - 5 mts 20 secs) is encoded for 28 Kbps Modem users with MUSIC format and buffers at 20.7 Kbps. The file size is still 0.79 MB only.
So if you still have questions, feel free to mail me.

Does anyone know whether XOOM really gives unlimited webspace.....or does it restrict to say like 100 MB or something like that??

I tried encoding it in the single rate stream. You were right. I ended up with 163 KB file for 1.05 minutes in the stereo format. The quality is very good. It buffers at 20.0kbps. I think It is fine for finding a good audience. Is this playable from a page ?
Next phase is trying to upload the file. How can I upload the file to my web page ? Sorry to bug you, but this is the only way to host a page for the songs :-(
If anybody feels it is not likeable to have such a discussion here, please notify. I am continuing here mainly because I feel (1)it may be useful for others too who want to start their pages and (2) there is little resistance.
Regards

You have to use File-Transfer-Protocol (FTP) to upload your files from your hard-drive to the webservers. On procedures related to FTPing files, please refer to help available in almost all the standard websites like geocities, tripod, xoom, etc.
You should have standard FTP software to put the files into the website. Or else, what you can do is go to dosprompt. Suppose if you have the file say "myfirstsong.ra" at "C:\SONGS", then go to that directory. In that dosprompt type this: "ftp ftp.tripod.com" (or--> ftp ftp.geocities.com or--> ftp ftp.xoom.com -- as appropriate)
Your commandline will look like this:
C:/>SONGS>ftp ftp.xoom.com
After you give the username and password, just type this in the ftp command line
ftp>bin
It will give you a message as thus:
type set to i (IMAGE aka BINARY)
This means that you are transferring your file as a BINARY FILE.
Now give this command: put mynewsong.ra
The commandline will look like:
ftp>put mynewsong.ra
Now the file will be getting transferred to the website and you have to wait patiently. When it is finished, it means that your file is now in the webserver. To see if that is the case, type "dir" at the prompt
ftp>dir
It will list down all the files in the directory.
I would better suggest you to download WS_FTP LE from www.download.com which is very easy for uploading files using FTP.
After this, you need to create what is known as a REALAUDIO METAFILE (ram file). This file is just an ascii text file which contains the URL of the actual file. For example, I would create a .RAM (Metafile) for mynewsong.ra as this:
http://members.xoom.com/MS/mynewsong.ra
This is the only content of say, "mynewsong.ram"
You now go ahead and give link to this file to your HTML code. So when a person clicks on the link, the .RAM file is transferred to the RealPlayer and the RealPlayer reads the URL from the .RAM file, fetches the .RA or .RM file from the webserver by buffering it.
Hope this is clear to you. Or else feel free to raise your questions here.
(I have like given many emails detailing the points at different occassions....so it would be a good idea to clarify things right here)

MS:
One important point:
While transferring .RAM files to the FTP site, the mode of transfer should be ASCII.
For this in the ftp prompt type it as : ascii (previously you would have typed it as --> bin)
The commandline should look like:
ftp> ascii
Then put the .RAM file as:
ftp> put mynewsong.ram
Hope this is clear.

A BIG THANKS FOR Then Poove and Raakkamma! Rakkamma, the song of the decade, is worth putting in MP3 format. Then Poove, I am hearing after a long time. THE BEST combo - SPB & SJ for duets like this.

Hi Rex,
I happened to read the previous postings between you and MS.
Some of the q which i had intended to ask you were asked by MS.Hats off to MS.
I think you must be aware that I have uploaded some songs in my site. But the audio quality is not as good as yours.
I see that you use settings like equaliser, noise reduction etc.
It would be much helpful if you could throw in some of your techinuques to naive people like me, MS(?) etc.
I am also using the Goldwave software.

There is an easier FTP utility for Windows called WS-FTP. You dont have to remember any commands. You connect to a server and there are two windows - your PC and the server. You can click and drag files from one window to the other based on whether you want to send or recieve files. Here is a FAQ along with downloadable info

Thx. But, the platforms on which it is available are Win 3.1 and win 95. I am with Win NT. Is it right to download the version for Win 95, install and run on NT ?

I hv NT and have an old copy that I downloaded for 95. It works fine on my machine. I dont think you should have a problem if you download the 95 version.
There is also another CuteFTP - identical to WSFTP. This sure works with NT

I have mentioned about WS_FTP utility in my response. Though it is a best shortcut to use FTP, I gave another way to use FTP by just using your ordinary dos prompt. Definitely WS_FTP utility is the best and the user need not remember any of the mind-boggling commands.
MS & Balaji:
Continuing with encoding stuff......go ahead and listen to "MEgam Kottatum aatam Undu" from my site which according to me is right now poorly encoded. Towards the end of the song, the fusion music is not completely captured. That throws up an important point....When using Goldwave software, should I encode it under MONO or STEREO....If MONO or STEREO what sampling rate should i use??? Should it be 22050 Hz or 44100 Hz?? etc.
May be if time permits, I will be re-encoding the same song by tomorrow and will be updating it, when you can clearly see the difference for yourself.
Just because you have the option, one should not blindly record the songs in Goldwave as STEREO songs. Because when you do that, and try to encode the song in RealAudio as MONO a lot of distortion occurs......You might think, "What the heck?? We will encode the song in STEREO for RealAudio too". But remember.....not all RealAudio STEREO files sound better than MONO ones.....Most of the times, MONO RealAudio files are better than STEREO RealAudio Files.
So you have to think before encoding, about these 2 questions.
1) While recording the song as a WAVE file, what mode should I use and what sampling rate should I use.
2) What encoding format should i use to convert this WAV file to a RealAudio file?
I learnt a lot out of sheer experience.....and it might take some time to answer these 2 questions for a new person. Only experience will teach you how best to make this decision. But you always have a shortcut to tide out of such dilemmas. Record a short clip under different modes and convert it to realaudio files and play it...See how it sounds and then decide on what you want to do.
All these things are pain, given the fact when you can directly plug in your taperecorder to the computer and directly encode it using RealProducer. But if you want to bring out quality stuff to the web, it means much much more than that....and you should be ready to take pains towards achieving that goal.
I will try to keep you updated, whenever I get bugged with my project work that I am doing right now....
