I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan, Are u sure about MBS dying in lakshwadeep. i remember reading that he died in a first class railway compartment and the body was there for quite some time before it was identified by a porter or some such stuff.
apart from Thennankeerin unjalile, eriyile oru kashmir roja which you have mentioned he will be remembered for the great choir song" Paada saalai poga vendum paapa ezhundiru chella paapa ezhunthiru". this was one good thing to come out of emergency AIR used to air this song ad nauseum.
By the way who scored the music for nellu " Thingal vaanil... gangai thanai punarndaalum..." Was it Salil chowdary then. funny i had thought it to be MBS. ( Their music especially the orchestration seems similar isn't it)

Saravanan -
Thank you once again for enthralling us with such comprehensive write-ups which seldom overlook contexts and subtexts. These days I have to read them at least 3 times to absorb all the minute details you incorporate in the exposition. My best compliments to you!
Aana Kaana - I remember agreeing with Neel many moons ago, when he said that this particular song ought to be THE audition song for any singer who aspired to make it in TFM. Every time I hear it, the clarity, artistry, and commitent of the singer to excellence is astounds me. What a magnificent composition, simple in concept, and staggering in its execution. Unforgettable.

Saravanan,
I think 'Kaanchi Kaamaakshi' had another song ' Thripura Sundaree' by KJY, which was a hit those days!
I can't help thinking about the irony that a fighter of MBS' calibre, composed so many of those emergency propaganda songs on DD!

Vengayam- I distinctly remember reading that MBS passed away in Lakshadweep.
Actually, I typed a lot about his serndisai songs too, but I felt the MBS write-up had become too long, and so I deleted those details. Perhaps it is still longish, but I just got carried away!
'Thingal maalai venkudayaal' is from the unreleased Karumbu, Music by Salil Chowdhry.
Naaz- Thanks! Yes, Aana kaana is simply awesome!
C V- Are you sure that 'Thirupura sundari' is from KK?
Prabhu-Thanks for that effort. It is going to be very useful to me!

Prabhu -
Thank you for making the time and crunching these pages into one file. It sure could use an editor :-)
Saravanan -
A good companion to the Aana Kaana song (is this one available at the website, I didn't find it...)would be this one:
Varanam Aayiram Suzha...Kanaak Kandaen.
I don't instantly recall any details of this song, but it has the same purity of note, enunciation and execution.

Where can I listen to the "Aana kaanaa" song on the internet? I don't think we have it even in the VJ website.

Naaz: Yes, Vaaranamaayiram by VJ was from Navagraha Nayagi-1985. (In the episode on Saneeswaran, Viji sings it) Music:MSV
Aandaal’s Vaaranamaayiram has been sung by many singers in many films over the years. Two other versions that stand out in memory are the haunting one by (Radha)Jayalakshmi in S.Balachander’s music in Avana Ivan-1962, and the enchanting one by SJ in Keladi Kannmani-1990, Muisc:IR.
Kaumudi- I haven’t come across ‘Aana Kaana' anywhere in the net :(

Saravanan -
Is the VJ-BMK duet (brilliance taken to a whole different level) -
Sandhanak Kundam Ordru Sadhuradudhu
Thamarai Vizhi Vandu Isaip Padudhu...
also from Navagraha Nayagi? BMK is top-notch as usual, and VJ finishes the song with a phenomenal jathiswaram.
Kaumudi -
I might have a MP3 file of Aana Kaana somewhere. Give me a half a day and I will email it to you as soon as I find it (in this maze that is my computer.)

Kaumudi - Neel used to have it in his first VJ page. the link at the title post used to point to it until bb changed it to what it is now. It is a great composition. andha pAtta kEttA pronunciation-na enna-nu theriyum.
of course, I've managed to "abase" a copy of it:) I used to listen to it 10-15 times a day when Neel put it up.

Naaz- Yes, Sandhana kudam ondru is also from NN.
I'm sure you all know this, but just wanted to add that the lyrics of both songs of Pudhu Cheruppu Kadikkum were by Jayakanthan himself. I seem to have missed mentioning it.

Thanks a lot. I was so tempted to listen to it immediately because you guys have been saying that it is an audition song for any singer and ,now, a song that teaches how thamizh pronunciation should be.

Thanks for the offer, but I think Naaz has finally found it and mailed it to me.
Naaz
Thanks for taking the time to search for the song. What a song it is!! Now I understand what Saravanan meant when he wrote about VJ's singing of alphabets etc. I wonder how many such gems I don't even know about! I wish this song were on the VJ website.

Glad you were able to open the file.
A song like Aana Kaana is what separates a singer from a crooner.
Thank god for Neel's website, one can listen to a good segment of VJs songs (and in turn SPB/KJY/TMS etc) from the 70s. Most other sites seem to feature less and less of the 70s and early 80s.
I am thankful for small mercies :-)

Sriram and others -
These are Kaumudi's questions:
a. What are her favorite ragas (I know she would say that all ragas are beautiful), something which she really loves and those which touch her heart. Has she sung any film songs in those ragas?
b. She is extremely cautious and wonderful which pronouncing/singing stuff in non-Tamizh languages. Like telugu, for example. She doesn't make mistakes with words common between Telugu/Thamizh. She also spoke good Telugu in an interview during January this year. Did she learn telugu? How does she write her telugu songs? I heard she writes them in Sanskrit - is this true?
c. Does she always make sure she knows the gist of the song, especially if she is singing in Telugu?
d. Is there is any plan in the future to compose music perhaps for a non-filmi album which has classical music as a base? Is there any plan of coming up with a CD devoted to Annamacharya keerthanas or Thyagaraja krithis?
e. When she goes to the recording studio, let's say she doesn't feel like singing that particular song for reasons like objectionable lyrics etc., How does she react to such circumstances?
f. Are there any songs/music of a particular genre/category that she would like to sing/explore?
g. Is there a future plan (or already in place) for teaching classical music/light classical music?
h. Interesting episodes that she can remember from working with KVM, MSV and IR.

...and Saravanan's :
1.Her thoughts/ memories of Vijayabhaskar. So many great songs came out
in
their partnership.
2. Her thoughts on the mind-blowing 'En Ullil engo'- it would be great
if
she would sing a few lines too- perhaps that is too much to ask in an
interview?
3. Her thoughts again on 'Thottilil thodangidum thalaattu'- what a
song! And
her jathis in the song.

Could you add another question I thought would be good after reading Saravanan's questions: What was it like singing the song Aanathi neeyara?
Looks like I'm monopolising this questionnaire! Why isn't anyone else interested in contributing questions here? The more, the better it will be, won't it?
