one more similar decent song is "kuthu villakeriya" from "Pachai Villaku". that song was also picturized with Vijayakumari and SSR. It is a first night song. She is waiting for him and no sign of him entering the room. She makes an attempt by singing a pleasent song and she gets a decent response from him. If the same sequence is there in contemporary movies...............No need to explain. Kannath thorakanummmm saaaaaaamyyy.

Senty-
Thank you for your suggestion/instruction. I will follow it to a T. Hope it leads to Tamizh! :-)
bb-
A soothing, evocative song. Thanks. (After I listened to SOTD, this song followed in a sequence...Thuyiladha Pennondru Kandaen...Ennaallum... (PBS/SJ, right?) and also for VK and SSR??

Hi Naaz,
Thuyiladha penn onru kanden is from the sridhar-directed film Meenda Sorgam and sung beautifully by AMR and PS, MD is Chalapathy Rao. It's one of the most loved duets by Kannadasan himself. Among the selected songs he had picked to go in on a 33 r p m record with other songs such as 'ennai yaar endru', 'vaazha ninaithal vaazhalam', 'neerodum vaigaiyile nindradum meene' etc.

S Ramaswamy -
Thank you for the corrections and the correct details. I am awed by the simplicity of the songs, the sincerety of the singing, and the poetic profundity of these yesteryear songs.
Along with Thuyiladha Pennondru, my cherished duets from that era are: Thangaradham Vandhandhu Vedhiyile, Parththaen Siriththaen Pakkanvara, Indha Mandraththil Odi Varum, Aththaan Enaththaan,
Yaar Yaar Yaar Avar Yaaro, Aththikkaai Kaai Kaai, Aadondru Ponaal Vayadhonru Pogum, Mullaimalar Mele Moikkum Vandu Pole...
I don't prefer these songs for the memories attached to them. I prefer them for their immortal appeal and their essential tamizh-ness. Of course, singing excellence is the hallmark of all these songs.

Hi Naaz,
I agree with u cent per cent. Those were the days when melody ruled, unlike the current ones when noise rules the roost.

Song of the Day: kaNNaa varuvaayaa from manadhil urudhi vENdum.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kannaa.rm
- Sung by KJY and Chithra. Music by Ilayaraja.
- This melodious song in a K.Balachandar movie is one of two good songs in this movie, the other being "sangath thamizhk kaviyE". The song, set in gowri manohari, IMO pales in comparison with two great songs set by IR in this raagam, dhooraththil naan kaNda un mugam and pon vaanam panneer thoovuthu innEram. Wonder who the lyricist for this song is (Vaali?). Chitra's diction is superb in this song (as it usually is).
- The film itself was loosely a rehash of the working girl of avaL oru thodarkathai, I think, with an additional romantic angle. The film launched the acting careers of SPB, Vivek and Ramesh Arvind.

Then , why is this song SOTD? Because the other two have already been featured? :-)
Sangath thamizh kaviye was the pick of the album.
Talking of Gowrimanohari, "oru kaaviyam arangerum"(Aruvadai Naal) and "bhoopalam isaikkum"(thooral ninnu pochchu) were also good ones

Hmmm ... I feel it should be three atleast, 'kaNNin maNiyae, kaNNin maNiyae poraattamaa' was a wonderful song - very well sung by Chitra and beautiful lyrics by vaalee !

bb, there is an endless tirade of GowriManohari based songs from IR of various hues and they are amazing melodies. Sample these
Kannan naalum podum vesham - Ilamai kolam(with a superb initial humming by SJ)
Poove panipoove - from Nilavu suduvathillai
Solai poovil malai thenral - Vellai roja
Santhana kaatre - Thanikaatu raaja
Paadum vaanampaadi - naan paadum paadal
Then poove poove vaa - Anbulla Rajnikanth
Thenralai kandu kol maane - Nilave mugham kaatu
Undan raajiyathil - Aandaan adimai, must be his latest one.

Illai, Bala, Manathil Urudhi Vendum-1987 came after IR's break with Vairamuthu, and had all songs by Vali.
The only KB film to have all songs by Pulamaipithan was Azhagan.

The Cminor scale in WCM corresponds to Kirvani...thats the general theory. As per Prof.Sambhamurthy it is actually the Gauri-Nata melam( 1604 melam in his raga structure with Aarohanam in GM and avarohanam in natabhairavi).Being a well trained WCM IR s general affinity towards CMinor scale has resulted in plenty of Kirvani,GM and then natabhairavi scale.Just proves another point that how good he is at the theory of music.
MSV too has his share of GM,like Malare kuriji malare,Oru aalayam agum (sumathi en dundari -You will get the same feel as Dhoorathil naan kanda).Even Ammnai from Avan oru sarithiram set in Dharmavathy (the prati of GM) has the occasional suddha Ma.(include the GM kanden in Mzhalai pattalam)
Even the SG s varalama featured in SOTD last week has a good shade of GM in the latter part of charanams.
ARR s Poongatriley is the last known better treatment of GM.I felt pretty bad listening to the sudden GM piece by Mani sharma in Ezhumalai -The current crop use the good GM as a filler.

"Chitra's diction is superb in this song (as it usually is)."
There is an error, and a lie in the above statement. The "diction" does not belong to the singer, it belongs to the poet/lyricist. And the paranthetical emphasis is something that can be proven wrong - in any song sung by Chitra.
Kanna Varuvaya is a classic example of how a tamizh song can be "malayalamised" (as many were, when sung by KJY and KSC) and yet tamils can be made to accept such moments as sublime and "apt."
What is "swargam idhuvo" please, if not malayalam?
What is "un mugham paarkire..." "nadhi orum ( shouldn't that be "oram"??) nadandhu..." "ragam seerkava (??)" "vidindhalum or nedunalum? (even with earphones and three encores, I couldn't figure this one out.)
Sorry to rain on your parade, but KJY and KSC are a dynamite combination in Kerala perhaps. But when they get together for a duet as the SOTD above, he carries on with his legendary devil-may-care attitude toward tamizh, and she, a bonafide disciple, irons out every tamizh nuance in the song, drops endings and renders the song ready for dialysis. (KSC manages this songs-seeking-life-support even when it is a vivacious, frolicky, no holds barred hindi song like "Bani Bani Bani Re Bani" from MPKDH. It must be a gift.)
Amazing what people will accept and celebrate. But we're all so adept at traversing this thin line between hypocrisy and honesty, we can pat ourselves on the back to raising it to a lever of a fine art.

Oh Naaz, probably , legendery singers like Chitra/KJY can avail of this phonetical , linguistic licence for exceptionally sweet songs.
Naaz, neenga enna ippidi ChithraGuptan maadiri kanakku paarkirel? I'm gonna get jitters when I sing any Thamizh song.
