SPB and Hariharan - Who is the best

I am starting this thread to be able to bring and share thoughts as to whether SPB or Hariharan is the best male singer in TFM now.
I still think SPB is the best and will be the best for the near future unless someone better than him really pops up.
Hariharan is a over-rated singer can't pronounce Tamil properly and cannot sing with clear sruthi. He is able to sustain just because people like to hear new singers than the old ones like SPB, MANO, Yesudas

Few examples of why SPB is the best now
1. Oh Thendrele - from Enrenrun Kaathal
2. Velli Malare - JODI
3. Unai Parkum Pothu Naan - Kathal Mannan
What a Vibrant Voice SPB has in these songs !!!

3. Should read as "Unnai Partha Pinbu Naan..."

Raj,
Everyone is tired of IR Vs ARR comparison topics.
Ravi has closed all such topics for now and made the site very boring. So, had to start something different.

Hariharan may be churning out many hits today and every music director may want one of his songs in every film; but he can never match the range of SPB. Hariharan is a melody specialist, that's all
- From: Dorai (@ gateway7.ey.com)
on: Thu Mar 25 16:48:59 EST 1999
Venkat,
I don't know whether to call him even a melody specialist, because he at times finds it difficult to maintain shruthi at low pitch (e.g. Ellavenir Kaala Panchami... from MVU).

For heaven sake, please don't compare SPB - a great living legent with some average singer like Hariharan. Nobody can give the twist which only SPB can give. Hariharan is no way near to SPB. Please stop this debate.

SPB is truly better even to an untrained ear.
Hariharan has a right to try. It has been my desire to hear a singer with Jesudas high pitch, and SPB-type sruthi (with style waves) at low pitch, keepin the flow and melody thro. Substituting TMS for Jesu in the above line is permissible.

I doubt if Jesudas' is a high pitched voice, RM! Is it so?

karthi,
Listen to "Malrae kurinji malrae", "kalaivaaniyey" and "ramakatha gaanalayam" (from bharatham - malayalam). You can conclude by yourself

RM,
SPB is as good in high pitch as he is in low pitch.
Eg, Sankara... Nadasha - Sankara Baranam
Sangitha Jaathimulai - Kaadhal Oviyam
I feel he is even better than Yesudas in High Pitch. His voice remains stable and nice at high pitch which I doubt about Yesudas's Voice.

VK, I agree that HH and SPB arent comparable. But that doesnt make HH "crappy". He is definitely a good singer!

I agree fully with chandy. SPB is incomparable. Here the song - Sangeetha Jaadhi Mullai from Kaadhal Oviyam. Adhukkellam National Award kudukkama, "Thanga thamarai malare" padunadhukku kuduthurikkanga. That entire movie Kadhal Oviyam is well dominated by SPB.
I started liking HH after the song "Vidukadhaya Indha Vazhkai". Very high pitch song, analum pisirillama irundhadhu.

Murli, for the national award, one competes with songs that came out in that particular year. sangeedha jaadhi mullai pona varusham vandurindha, adhuku award kidaichirukallam!! :))

on: Mon Mar 29 12:32:49 EST 1999
Chandy,
I think Murali's point is SPB deserved National award for "Sangeetha Jathimulai" more than "Thangathamarai..". We all know that these movies came in different years, but the point here is the
National Award Commitee is just "Too Arbitrary" in
selecting songs for awards.

The National Award Comittee is anything but arbirtary ! They have a set agenda ($$$) and will follow it even if it means selling awards rather than "awarding" them !

SPB deserved NATIONAL award for Kambam emandan itself, For domination he has the ever great Shakarabaranam, Nenai thale inikum.
Has any ONE heard Angum ingum --- from Avargal.
There are many many spb songs which are really master pieces.
(BTW guys:I feel Sangeetha Jathi mullai is somewhat tooooo long and dragy.)
National Award is a just a mile stone to denote thier achivement, Thangathamarai is good song. The songs is very bouncy because of SPB only, if HH had done that song --- suthama jute.
Like us, ARR knows, he makes sure the (rare) best tunes he composes are sung by Balu,
eg: July madham vandhal, Kadal rojave, sevanam, Otagatho -- these are excellent tunes, can be song only by Balu. My life time ambition is to have spb sing for my tune, hope time will to make it happen. (Nala Kanavu...)
finally,
HariHaran is like South Indian Rasam cooked by a North Indian cook, it lacks something! .
No where near the great balu....

Srikanth,
have YOU heard the song yE dhivilO virichina pArijAthamO sung by spb long long ago, so long ago that
nobody knows how long ago? he deserved a national award for that song.

"HariHaran is like South Indian Rasam cooked by a North Indian cook, it lacks something!

Also I was listening to Padayappa's title song on Vel's page (no, I am not trying to gather points to bash ARR again :-)) The song totally rests on SPB's voice ! Another fantastic example is SPB singing with a rendunkettan in "Ennai Kaanavillaye Kannodu". I wonder why ARR made the other guy sing with SPB. It was like eating halwa, but one bite sweet and the other bite asaduvayinjifying !
Srikanth:
Unga first TF song-a SPB paadanumnu naanum vendikaraen ! I think SPB is the only TFM personality whom all DFers like ! And I am sure he will not be small-minded to turn you down if you approach him ! Also another good thing ARR did with Ottagatha kattiko was SJ !

aruLarasan,
I'm glad you feel that SPB deserved a national award for E dhivilO virisina..... He DID get a national award for that song. BTW that song was an inspiration out of an O.P. Nayyar song and was first done with PBS in Kannada by Satyam the MD and then later by SPB in Telugu for the movie KannEy vayasu.

Srikanth!
I think Kaadal Rojave is by Mano and not SPB. Can anyone clarify?
- From: Shankar (@ webgate0.mot.com)
on: Tue Mar 30 01:38:06 EST 1999
eden,
kAdhal rojave is by SPB.In fact that song can be used to compare SPB and HH (though the song doesn't get the best out of spb).
The emotional part of it (that "kAdhal rOjavE" comes from his heart!!!!!)is missing in HH's version. he sings it mechanically ,trying to show his classical knowledge in a song sung by a character which is emotionally down (similar to MKT's "krishna mukunda murArE" from haridas. Both his legs wud've been cut and he'll be bleeding profusely ,ivar sruthi pisagAmal jOra pAdindu iruppAr!!!!! ennayyA logic idhu???? )
Apart from the versatility , SPB is light years ahead of HH in bringing out the emotions of the character. SPB can make even a mediocre songs a hit whereas HH has spoiled a lot of good songs by his pathetic singing (ex:meetAdha oru veeNai)

one more comparision - the song thoda thoda pyar
from priyanaka ( tamil indra, song thoda thoda
malavardane). BOth SPB and HH rendered this song,
with chitra in hindi. SPB was miles ahead in this
song compared to HH. HH was good, but he failed
in bringing emotional element, while singing, but
SPB just sailed through, as usual.

Some other egs:
"Oru mani adiththal" by HH and and its telegu version by SPB. I do not know telegu, but liked SPB's better.
"Alolankili thoppile" by SPB in tamil by HH in hindi and MGS in mallu ('know all these three languages :-)). Folks - note that this is the first song of HH for IR and not "ennai thalatta". Needless to say SPB was far ahead of the others.

Hiya Folks ...
Well, Hariharan is a good singer in his own right and so is SPB ... SPB has indeed a great range but one must not forget that he has a great many more years of experience in the TFM Industry (altho HH may have sung otherwise) ... instead of condemning HH, why not use him as a foil to SPB (to highlight SPB's talent even further) and try to see HH's talent too ...I'm sure the music directors would have kicked him out of the industry long ago if he was that lousy a singer as many of you claim ...
