Guys,
I was wondering wether there are any more songs in TFM other than "poongkatrile" in "paattu paadava" without any precussions .This song by IR was unique that there was no percussion with bass and rythym guitar giving the needed tempo. It was an amazing composition with great interludes.

I remember that clapping sounds were the predominant percussion sound in the song,"Chinna Poovae Mella Pesu". Was there a percussion instrument used in it? Can't recall, it's been a long time since I heard that song.

Guys,
If tabla, mridangam, drums, bongos etc are percussion instruments then there are few songs without them that come to my mind
1. Unnidam Mayangugiren - Then sindhuthe vaanam
2. Uravugal thodarkadhai - Aval appadithaan
3. Vizhiyorathu kanavo - Raaja Paarvai
4. Azhage Azhage - Raaja Paarvai
- From: Anand Mahadevan (@ 205.147.245.41)
on: Thu Jul 30 16:56:26 EDT 1998
I think Azhage Azhage has tabla used as percussion."Raasathi" from Thiruda Thiruda is a good example.

I am not very sure about the following songs. Somebody can vouch for it:
1. ennuLLE ennuLLE, pala minnal ezhum nEram - vaLLi
2. paruvamE puthiya paadal paadu - nenjaththai killaathE
3. thendralE thendralE - kaadhal dhEsam
4. a jayachandran song in kadhalan
(some thing like 'kuruththOla senju vachchu'?)
5. Oraayiram paarvayilE, unpaarvayai naan arivEn - vallavanukku vallavan

A few others come to my mind:
Vaan nila from Pattina pravesam
Another song from the movie "Ezhaavadu manidhan", I know for a fact, I think the music director was Lalgudi Jayaraman. Also, "Kottambatti Rotile" from Thodi Ragam, the music director being Kunnakudi Vaidiyanathan.
A lot of old MSV hits are without beat:
Aththaan Ennathaan
Aval marandhu ponale
Kasedhan kadavulappa
etc. etc.

PeeSoo,
The prelude of the song yennulle has an excellent 'mridangam' piece (in fact, the prelude has only that!!!) followed by an acoustic guitar and humming.

Shankar:
oh yes.. How did I forget that lovely mridhangam? Thanks a lot for pointing it out. But, is there any percussion instruments once the song gets into its "shape/theme"?
Also, paruvamE puthiya paadal has some jazz/drums in the stanza I remember!
How about, 'malarnthum malarathaa' - the gem of MSV?

arubum thalire from the film chandrlekha. Great song by IR, with percussion (drums beat) used for
only one beat in the end of the second interlude.

easwaran,
At last , I found one more soul to like the great song from Chandralekha. In fact I would say it's the best song from the movie (better than allah un aanai padi). The song didn't get the recognition it deserves.

Shankar,
I think u r refering to ARUMBUM THALIRE from Chandra lekha.
Great violin pieces follow all the way in the song.
It was sung by ArunMozhi.
It would have been a great hit if it had been sung by ARR or Hariharan or even by Deva.
Anyway guys that song deserved something better.

buddy,
I liked the way arunmozhi sang that song. That song, IMO needed subdued singing, and arun mozh
is indeed the good choice. Even the female singer
geetha was good. It is indeed far better song than
the popular 'alla un anaipadi'.
sankar, I am also happy to find another soul, who
enjoys this wonderful song.

Guys,
"Kanava illai.." song from Rakshagan sung by Srinivas is a super song from genius ARR.
Just hear that. you will forget all the other songs.
This is the best of this category, I can bet on that.
ARR has used saraswathi, and sarangi if I am not mistaken. (he used this combination for 'Love birds' for the beatiful song 'Malargale..').
Aaahaa. enna paaattu
Kelungal inda padalai....

Following are some of the songs of Maestro with
no percussion instruments :
Vizhiyil vizhunthu idhayam nuzhainthu - Alaigal
Oyvathillai
Maha ganapathim - Sindhu Bhairavi
Annakkili Unnai Theduthey (TMS) - Annakkili

Venkat,
I think Vizhiyil vizhunthu does have percussion.
Won't there be a mridangam /madhalam playing in the BG when IR hums "thakathom thakathom...???

Chandramouli i think "Unnidam mayangugiren" has some excellent drum beats just before the first intelrlude starts.(when KJY finishes the line
inisai devadhaiyae.. tak takthaka thak taK).

Did you know :
1. Raja played piano for the song "Unnidum maya..".
2. Raja arranged and orchestrated "Thaen Sindudhae vaanam" when he was working for GK Venkatesh.
I heard this on the radio way back in 1977 when there was a "Sirappu Thenkinnam" by Raja in AIR.
- From: muthax (@ client209-42-213-78.intrex.net)
on: Fri Aug 7 12:27:21 EDT 1998
Then sindhudhae vanam was by Vkumar.
i never knew IR was working for him.
who is GKVenkatesh?
btw, even the song then sindhudhae vanam is good.
if IR played this Fantastic Piano piece(which according to me and many others is the best piano piece which has comeout in the TFM or even IFM), why he could not bring a better one than this.....?
ithu oru puriatha puthiraga irukiradhu.
thanx for the info sreedhar

Before Raja hit the market with "Annakili", he was working as a asst. director to GK Venkatesh. GK Venkatesh was one of the popular composers from kannada film world. BTW, Raja and Gangai Amaran have also worked with TM Soundarajan in his music group. "Then sindudhae" is a composition of GKV, to best of my knowledge. Right now, I do not have any proof though. Maybe, I can check out the SPB golden collection (BY RPG) next time I go to the store.

I went to SPB's concert last year. SPB sang "Thaen Sindhudhae Vaanam" and said that IR played guitar in the song. I'm not sure if IR made the arrangements. Anyway, wasn't the song a remake of a Hindi song, "Jalthi Halae Hoja"?
If it is IR in "Unnidam Mayangukiraen", then it is a crime that he doesn't use piano more often in his pieces. To date that is the best piano composition in TFM. V.Kumar was a gifted composer.

Udhaya: Just curious. You probably have a valid reason to claim that "Unnidam Mayangukiraen" has the best piano interludes in TFM ? I would love to hear more technical details. BTW, are you a keyboard player ?
