Who can be conferred as the Melody Queen of South Indian FIlm Music .
Is it S.Janaki or P.Susheela or Chitra or Vani Jayram..?
I think Janaki is the best of all and she should be conferred as the Melody Queen of South Indian Music

well ...i donno much about singers potential...but what ppl say usually is P SUSHEELA
coz janaki , and vani jayaram are not suitable for all songs ...they got their own domain....
chitra she is good but cannot be in drivers seat for a songs melody touch ....only SUSHEELA can ....... ;)

It is Chitra now and SJ in the past.
Vani is good only for Classical songs.
PS was really good late 60's and early 70's.

vardhini: if you would care to visit the VJ thread or http://www.vanijayaram.com , you would be enlightened, to say the least.
great singers can/should never be slotted as best only in one/a few types of songs. they have proved or are capable of proving their mettle in whatever song they tackle. this applies to the constant bickering that goes on in the Rafi-SPB and the uncountably infinite other SPB threads.

Susila very sweet in 60's (all heroins)
Vani very sweet in 70's and early 80's(all heroins)
Janaki's voice is very sweet from 60's to 90's even now but not for all heroins
Chitra is so so

As of today, I will say it is Chitra. But otherwise, all these 4 singers are legends in their own right. For naughty or coquettish songs, however, there is no beating S Janaki. She is completely unmatched in that area in SIFM.

Janaki is the best! no doubt about it whatsoever. she is the most versatile singer in the whole wide world... Chitra and PS are pretty good singers. but they cannot match the variety and modulation of SJ.
She is the Melody queen!
and no wonder she has sung so many songs for Isaignani.
Hey mg12: she is the best!!! :)

Its always P. Susheela who is still respected in TFM even now... She has retired from the field after her husband's demise... may be frm 1992-93. But there is a place for her and she is "Kaaviya kural vaLam konda isai arasi", as narrated by Sun TV, when they telecasted a 3-hr prog on Tamil film music of the yestre century.. :-)

I totally agree with you subbu, there is no doubt about it.
Songs like solla solla inikithada muruga, Unnai Kanatha Kanum Kannala, Yena Than Raghasiyamo Ithayathile, Neela selai Kathi kondha samuthira Ponu, Yenai Yedhuthu Thanai Khoduthu, Unnai Naan Santhithan, Tamilukum Amuthandru peer, Azhagan Muruganidham asai veithan, Athai Madhi methayedi, manavene azhalama, athan Yenathan, Kanna Varuvan Kathai Soluvan, Manam Padahithaen Unai ninaipetharku and many many more are kalathil Aliyathavei (yendrndrum). Next to susila is definately Vani jayaram.

Hi Pranav
It is a good topic, but my suggestion is, why cant u put it in "This Week Poll" so that we can see in black and white how many votes go for each of the singers.

So, All IR group can poll like "raakamma" and bring your choice to no:1. I dont think, tfm polls reflects the exact result.
reason :
Most of the net users are below forty group. They belongs to IR or ARR group. Most of them dont what about before '75 songs. Occationally they hear few hit songs MGR, Shivaji or jai. But, PS gems were before 80's.
Pl. listen the old songs also, before starting comparision.

S.Janaki is the most versatiled singer in South Indian Film Muisc. She has sung all osrt of songs with full of expressions and life.
You can feel the feeling of the song through her voice.
But , PS, KSC, VJ lacks expressions and liofe in their songs. Only a few songs are exceptional. Ps songs are monotonous. KSC most of the times sings as some one has pressed her throat. Vj voice is also like that only, but some of her clasical songs, duets are ereally good.
But, Sj is the Melody QWueen of SIFM. No one can match her voice,. melody. She is unbeateable.
Though she was sidelined by many MDs at teh beginging of her career, she really proved her talent. SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE - is really applicable to Janaki.

I'm Really Amazed to see people who are born after late 70's who never heard all Ps's songs comment abt her here..
Some one said Monotonous- If they know the meaning of that Word ... they wouldnt have used..
Solla solla,
thaai thandha pichayile,
unnai thotta kaatru vandhu,
Kanann oru
all are Diff varieties( these r sample only)

P.Susheela's voice is good. But, what I said was her songs are monotonous. THough theya re melodious, all of her songs are of same type. There were no varities.
Even now, S.Janaki is rememberd in Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Kerala and Karnataka, this shows she is still in the hearts of Music lovers.
S.Janaki has given more melodies in Kannada also.
What ever it may be , My choice for ever is S.Janaki.

The richness in the voice....Listen ti Kaalathai vendravan nee...in Adimaipen...or Pallavi ondru in Sollathan Ninaikkerene...Both are duets by PS and SJ....P.S is far ahead of SJ....PS IS THE BEST ALWAYS.....Where would be SJ without IR....TNS
- From: av (@ 132.206.52.70)

TNS, SJ was a figure to be reckoned in Kannada and Malayalam film music always. S Janaki is considered to be THE diva of Kannada films. She has even been successful in Oriya films to a great extent. It is wrong to state that she would have been nowhere without IR. It was TFM which failed to recognize her talent adequately for 20 years till Ilayaraaja arrived and more than made up for it. And how he has tapped the talent in her voice!
That PS is a gorgeous singer, is absolutely true. SJ however is no less, IMO. I have listened to both the duets you have mentioned. I feel that both the singers have done an excellent job in those songs. Trying to put one above the other is pointless as far as the two songs go.
Thanks.

I completely agree with u av.
SJ has given great non IR numbers too. Listen to 'Sandhye' and other SalilChoudary's numbers esp in Malayalam, RajanNagendra's compositions in Kannada.

Where would be SJ without IR? Mr TNS dont make such meaningless statements, Kannada Industry had plenty of MD's from M.Venkata Raju...Hamsalekha. She gave lot of gems under those MD's. Without SJ where would be the Kannada Industry and also I heard lot of her good Mallu songs also. If you like PS no problem even I like her songs also(I do have some kannada songs of PS) Please dont comment like this. Thats true PS is far ahead of SJ in no of songs not talent. Both are talented I believe.
And av's words are 250% true.
regards

Dear Meera Krishna and av, what you told is really true. Janaki may be the top 2nd singer in TFM till 1970, but in KFM and MFm it was Janaki who was at no.1 position.
Janaki amma has given good gems in Kannada. As i am from Bangalore, I hear more kannada songs. Right from the beginging she has sung good number of songs under all MDS(like G.K. VEnkatesh, Vijaya Baskar, Rajan Nagendra, Upendra Kumar and new MDs like Hamsalekha, Vidya saagar)
NO one will forget her songs like - Shiva Shiva Ennnda Nalige(this has 2 raagas, superbly sung by SJ), Aakasha Deepavu Neenu, Hoovondu Beku Ballige, Naa Mechida Huduganige, Gaganavu Yello, Indu Enage Govionda, Poojisalende, All songs to actress Laxmi, Tam Nam Tam Nam and so on. Most of all her songs are GEMS, all aare remembered by kannada audience. GReat Singer PBS has compared her voice to FLUTE.
IR came into scene only after 1975, he was not that much mobilized in KFM, still SJ was the No 1 singer from 1957 to 1992. After 1992 , there were so many new singers like Manjula Gururaj, Chitra, in which Chitra got more songs.
The statement made by Mr. TNS is absolutely rubbish thats what I can say. MSV was always partial towards Sj, he use to give all of his songs to PS. But , the songs which he gave to Janaki were supere hits. No one can forget "Singaravelane deva". SJ is the melody queen of SFM
