I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan,
Sometime in 1975-76, there was a Telugu film named 'aadhi maanavadu' (dubbed in Tamil as 'aadhi manithan'- there was no need for dubbing anyway, as the film had no dialogues, other than some introductory background lines in Telugu!). College students used to flock the theatres for the you- know- what scenes! Though there were many characters with no single main hero or heroine, friends used to say that Sarita's face could be easily recognised in many scenes, as one of the important characters!
OISG,
'avan oru sariththiram' was indeed in the making for a long time. '20 point' propaganda was an after thought which messed up the film totally! I remember a song in which Sivaji and Manjula sell newspapers singing ' naaLai enna naaLai? inRu kooda namadhuthaan!', a good rejoinder to 'naaLai namadhE'!

Once again - Nandri, Dhanyavad, Shukriya, Thanks!
VB was a quiet brook, not a gushing cataract. His scores were similarly unpretentious (no crashing cymbals, no vaulting chorus) and genuine (no delusions of grandeur). This might be true of the man himself, and his training with simple originals like Madan Mohan and Naushad. Nothing in those days was presaged by the arrival of the PR machinery. That became a fixture only in the 80s.
To this day, I feel something resembling gentle breeze or shower whenever I listen to the songs from Soundaryame Varuga Varuga. Agayam Thane, Idho Un Kadhali, and Iravil Irandu Paravaigal, Chindamani Sendhamarai...quietly evocative, like the stars in an endless night sky.
When the marriage hall in our neighbourhood was booked for the "kalyana" season, two songs were absolute musts: Manamagale Un Manavarai Kolam (Kalangalil Aval Vasantham) and Malligai Mullai Pooppandhal (Anbe Aaruiyre - MSV). These, along with Kalyana Samaiyal Saadham and Naalaam Naalaam Thirunaalaam - ushered the festive mood in all of 15 minutes! And how authentic they were for the occasion.
Thank you for being THE GUIDE on this walk down memory lane!

C V- I didn't know that other side of Saritha!
Naaz- Thanks for your words. It is entirely due to such encouragement, that this humble effort has now crossed the 150th song. Hope to continue-
Yes, of course, MOM was by VB.

Naaz, my knowledge of swaras/notes is zero. I just use the layman's pattern recognition to identify raagas.
Saravanan, thanx for reminding me my childhood fav songs like
Sorgathai paarkalaam ennidam. I used to love the way VJ sings the word 'Paarkalaam' in her characteristic way.
My most fav songs from 'Kaalangalil aval vasantham ' are
1. 'mUDHAL MUDHAL VARUM SUGAM EDHU VENNA' by SPB/VJ
2.Mana magale un manavarai kolam
3. Anbenum chudaraal erivadhu vilakku (great lyrics to justify the place of a second wife, sung by VJ)
Recently, I heard 'Unakku naan sondham ennakku nee sondham' , sung by SPB and VJ from film??? I think VB is the MD.My mom used to love the song 'Maanika maamani maalaiyil' sung by SPB and VJ from film Thennankeetru. Sounds like VB's music

Mythila- Unakku naan sondham is from Unnaithaan Thambi. Music by VB.
Maanikka maamani malaiyil is by GKV.

Humble Effort. No.
Humbling Effort. Yes.
I have no idea if VJ has read your chronology. But I am sure if she did, she'd be just as effusive as the rest of us here.
It would be appropriate for your work to have a name.
I've been ruminating on a few titles myself. You must have your own ideas too. Let's come up with something stellar, something that does both the writer and the artiste proud.
And let's look forward to the 300th. :-)

Hi saravanan-Its really great to read your writeups on VJ's songs. Sure your write ups stir many nostalgic memories.
I wish I had met you in Gill Adarsh when we were studying around the same time.
I used to love the Mayangurilal oru madhu songs. Particularly the song Oru puram vedan maru puram..
Recently I was listening to the songs from vazhve mayam-particularly VJ and SPB duets.
The songs devi sridevi and marazhai kalam megam ondru..
VJ's voice was just amazing.
Also I read somewhere that in one mal. channel there were profiling some of the yesteryear play back singers like VJ, PsUSHEELA, S. JANAKI..
Did anyone watch VJ's part.

would be great if someone can post excerpts from the interview. it would be fodder for us to gather some questions for Naaz's interview with her next time.

Mythila -
I always feel tugging similarity between GKV and VB's scores. For instance, to this day, even though I've been corrected many times, I still can't on the spur tell you if it was VB or GKV that composed "Anbu Meghame Ingu Odi Vaa".
Who composed Maamadhurai Naatinil Vagaikarai Kaatrinil and Kadhai Sollum Silaigal Manmadhan Vidum Kanaigal? Such memorable duets!
Balaji -
Is that you?
Sriram -
I believe the Sangeetha Sagaram interview with VJ is on for the next 8 weeks! Each week a new instalment with songs from Mal/Tamizh.
Yes, it would be rewarding if somebody could post a weekly synopsis/excerpts for all of us.

Mr Saravanan, 'Kesarina Kamala' was released in 1974. VJ's first song in Kannada was "Nagu Nee Nagu Kirunage Nagu", beautifully sung by her. As a matter of fact PS voice was dominent in VB's music in Kannada. Cuz VJ debut in kannada industry was 1973-74. By that time, after 1975 VB's music becoming less and Rajan-Nagendra became popular. I dont know anything about his tamil compositions, unfortunately I heard very less in Tamil. But I heard all most all kannada compositions of VB, it is really a Gems. I like VJ's 'Bhavavenba Hoovu Arali' movie 'Upaasane', beautifully composed by VB. And VJ has sung lot of good songs under R-N also. She has sung one more good song in VB's music, movie was 'Suvarna Setuve', the song 'Malnaadin Moolenaage', this song is too good. And another song composed by VB was 'Bhagya Jyothi', it was a Sanskrit love duet song with PBS(he is the writer) and also its a dance drama of 'Vikramorvasheeyam', oh my god I never forget that song in my entire life. My fav Tamil song of VJ is 'Vaa Vaa Enn Veenaiyo' duet with SPB. No doubt VJ is one of the best singer in India.
regards
Meerakrishna

Saravanan,
Shaks! I failed to congratulate you on the 'veRRikaramaana 150vathu naaL'!!
Your tribute to VB is very touching! I doubt if any of his blood relatives could have given such an emotional touch to it! Reading your writeup, I get a feeling that he died very young. How old was he?
Naaz,
one quick name comes to my mind :
'VaaNiyin vaseegaram'.
Let me rack my brain a little more!

Hey- Thanks All!
I am moved by your words. I meant what I said though- I owe it entirely to your encouragement. I find it amazing myself, that I have continued with this so far- I am quite lazy, and have the attitude of not taking anything seriously. Also, more importantly, I have never attempted anything of this sort before, any sort of “writing” for that matter! Moreover, I am hampered by a complete ignorance of classical music, so I cannot give any technical descriptions of the songs. Also, I have to admit that I have never studied Tamil at school- my languages were Hindi and Sanskrit. What I learned is by deciphering Cinema Posters ( I once read Kowravam as Kelaravam : )), Kumudam and AV. I can now read well, though writing still poses a problem. Hence at times, the beauty of the lyrics is lost on me, and writing the lyrics itself becomes a very difficult job. You have all been very kind in turning a blind eye to these inadequacies, and bearing with my atrociously irregular posts. I earnestly hope I can continue to match your expectations. THANKS, once again.
CV- Vijayabhaskar was in his 70s when he passed away. His music was forever young, though!
Meera Krishna, thanks for the information on Kannada songs of VJ and VB.
