intha latchaNathil paattu pOdarathai vida veettil thoongi kurattai vidalaam. atleast we shall be relieved of the pain of listening to these. I have not heard a song similar to "chikkaatha chittondru" with an amazing overdose of mediocrity. The first line is same as " hey maaji milke chalo milke bhaaja (not sure of this lyric, excuse me if it is wrong) , hey rajaa gOdEy sambaal" of khaamOshi. The hindi song is hazaar times more decent.
UK lacks versatility. His exertions prove futile. He better resorts to singing soft numbers only.

Suresh,
Thanks for hosting those songs but alas, where is IR's midas touch? Gone forever? The songs are terrible. I wish he stops tuning music for whatever films he get and better confine himself to those that will trigger his thinking process, like 'Guru', 'Yaathramozhi', 'Kadhalukku Mariyaadhai'.
It is really really sad to witness the downfall of IR like this.

MS,
Your observation of Sethu songs is indeed right. But what really beats me is, how can IR swing between mediocrity & greatness.. I'm typing this as I hear to the BGM of Mugam from members.tripod.com/sgiridha. Its simply superb. Has a lot of life & it is certainly the Raja we all have seen at his prime.. I guess IR's music has a lot to do with his attitude on a given day!. How else can we explain this?

I must agree. Your inference is right. It is not lack of imagination, but interest. My reference for IR is always GURU. With such a talent how can a person produce such unappealing numbers ? In contrast wiht him is SAR who is atleast trying to give his best with his limited talents.
ARR is no different. His incipient ventures like roja, pudhiyamugam, thiruda thiruda are miles ahead of the songs he is churning out at present.

Folks,
I listened to one of the Sethu songs and I didn't find that to be as bad or mediocre as described here.Looks like we the IR fans have also started becoming harsh on him when there is no need to be like that.I remember even for the songs of Time, initially the mood here was that they are ordinary and after a while everybody started appreciating that.I feel with the limited(or nonexistent) musical taste of the current TFM audience(hearing the music of ARR,Deva and sundry),you can't expect IR to be very deep in his compositions and that's the reason his malayalam compositions bring out the best in him since the audience there are different and have different(and better) musical taste.
My humble opinion is we should not slander IR even if we are not appreciating him.
Thanks,
Athi

mmm..Athi, Is it a compromise that you propose ? I am a fan of IR but with a pinch of salt. BTW, I donot think "Time" was subjected to malice. The song "Niram piriththu parhthEn" has been held in high esteem right from the day it was discussed.
As to your observation that IR gives his best in mallu, I would say that he had been giving great albums in tamil throughout his career. Very lately has he given fabulous albums in mallu (sans the dubbed ones). I knew him by tamil and don't I have a right to expect from him in tamil ? After all I want to invest on good music and good music only !!!

MS: Your are right, raja was given his due respect for time,
I heard the 2 songs and they were totally poor. I did not comment on these because of the recording quality, but what ever it is songs are very poor.

Listen to the BGM of Sethu. It is wonderful plus novel. IR tried something new in his usual BGM. I saw and hear the BGM of Sethu in SunTV's Top 10 very lately.

Sethu was very disappointing !!. Same "dandanukku" without any greatness and bad recording quality were the only things noticeable.
But "Time" is a wonder. It does grow on you. "Niram Pirithu" is a jazz/classical fusion. In one word amazing. "Kaathal neethaana" was also good. "Thavikiren" was terrific, I loved Hari's voice in this.
I liked nenaichapadi also for which I guess the situation was folksy I guess.
Muthu Nilave was a great Jazz music - except that if some other voice had been there - pls KR do not sing. I love IR's voice which is of course, something else and no where close to KR's voice.

Hi MS,
Lot more of work these days and I was immersed in it for quite a while. Now that it has become more of a routine I found some time. Also, I felt newtfmpage was boring (too many clashes of opinions) and did not feel motivated much.
Why don't you send me a mail to rangm@hotmail.com ??

Hello So called IR Fans,
I agree with Athi that IR composes good music for Malayalam movies. May be because their story impresses IR not Tamils. Also as a Tamilian why don't you expect a Tamil singer to sing for Tamil films. How many Tamil singers you have now?
MS, As a Tamilian we can expect great music from IR. But as a Tamil do you have any innovative ideas/subjects in your Tamil films. To get the best music you must first inspire the MD.
Regarding Sethu or any film for that matter, listen to the music few times atleast. If the recording quality is poor, wait till you hear the good quality songs.
Base your arguments on facts not on your personal bias. No one will agree with you. We know as if we know the world. "Katrathu kai man alavu". IR said many times how many times should I compose for the same duets/scenes. Give me a different subject.
Time is placed 7th in Sun TVs ratings after Ooty. Terrible. I don't know how they rate the songs! Recycled tunes are occupying the prime spots for many reasons best known to them and to the intelligent music lovers from TN.
Vazgha Tamil.
Regards
ST Srinivasan

I thought sethu's recording was pretty good.Infact on the cassette cover it had the following written.
"Digitally Recorded at AR.Rahman's Panchathan Inn".
It has an impressive recording and I believe the songs pretty much gelled with the movie.
I was impressed with one song by unnikrishnan "Maalayil en vedhanai".

There has been lessr and lesser appreciation of IR's songs and perhaps no appreciation at all for his re-recordings. so, given the facts iam surprised as to why time and again these days IR concentrates more on BGMs and goofs up in the songs. In that way I think ARR is more market-savvy. He knows that what attracts people's attention is the songs that come out in cassettes, so he concentrates more on songs and asks sabesh-murali to do the BGM;))

MS,
Read Anand Mahadevan's posting. People know who pretends. Any best music, if you listen with hatred, will never sound good. IR fans can not listen to ARR songs with open mind and vice versa. Believe me songs may be good but it is the mental perception. I remember no one talked about "Time" when released. I see a lot of good reviews thesedays. People are like sheep. They follow the crowd blindly. But the so called net surfing intellectuals think though know everything if they know how to browse in music. I have not listened to the songs myself but my arguments are based on the way people think and feel.
My comments are general in nature. I believe the TFM forum is turning to be a third rated place with very low comments about even the best MDs and singers. I wish I do not visit this place again

I can take a very hard stand, but that is not my nature (atleast in the DF) :-). I feel, I have conveyed clearly my essence. As to your arguement that IR fans cannot appreciate others, I would rather speculate, it is probably your personal experience. I am comfortable with good music from both ( and so are many like bb, udhaya, just to name two..). Inspite of the my repeated assaults on Hindi (Junk )music, I have a lot of Hindi goldies. I have some albums like "KhaamOshi" of Jatin-Lalit, who produce many a repetitive tune for eg..in KKHH. I am sorry for my inability to let you not have the vicarious pleasure of my listening to the songs. I donot think I need to produce a confession before everybody that I enjoy particular songs of ARR / hindi MDs.
I understand that asking great albums from IR every time is like asking Tendulkar to score a century every time he bats. I DOunderstand that there are occassional failures. It is only after a row of failures that critics take a hard stand.
Reg your opinion that DF has become detestable:
My inference from your posting is that you are trying to do something for it. We are just thankful (NOM):-)IMO, There is an abundance of mutual respectability and appreciation. If you feel it is not upto the standards you expect , I just presume you are too disciplined even to criticize (which is in stark contrast with your post). In that case, may be you may try to think of forums better than DF (which are non-existent to my knowledge.)
Regards

Sethu/bb,
Of late a lot of unwanted threads like these are cropping up and are pushing the more meaningful threads to the archives. topics like these can be discussed in threads like 'IR's new albums' I feel. there is no need to start a new thread for every film unless otherwise the film perhaps has created some sort of sensation with its music and has a lot to be discussed about.
So, bb,Pl. do the needful.
