..and do not forget the KVM-AP Nagarajan movies. Udhaya, the review need not be movie specific, you could go by the CD/cassette in posession.
Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Thanks, SL, bb. 5 solos by PS, is this a TFM record?
sk,
Whatever possessed you to think of Kaaviyath Thalaivi, neenga vaazhga. I don't have most of these songs. A couple of them I have never heard. So I will give a partial review of the ones I know.
2)Kaiyoadu kai saerkkum kaalangalae, by PS has always been one of my favorites. The singing, lyrics, orchestration everything is set in high gear throughout. This is one of the happiest songs in TFM. Whenever there's a compilation of happy songs, expecially wedding songs, I bring this up.
6)aarambam indrae aagattum-SPB, LRE. This is one of those early SPB numbers that delivers. Although this duo didn't sing too many songs with each other, every one of theirs has been a good song ("oorkoalam poagindra" comes to mind). The sentiment and the tune are typical of young romance.
7)oru naal iravu pagal poal nilavu--PS. This is clearly on the other end of the spectrum, it's as sad as "kaiyoadu kai" was happy. This is one of those gems that I stay away from most of the time for the sheer depth of pathos in it.
I'm curious to read others' input.

Udhaya:
Sorry.. I missed seeing your posting when I posted
my last one.
In my opinion,
en vaanaththil aayiram veLLi nilavu
stands out as the best.. for the excellent emotional
content.. for the wonderful singing by PS.. the
very good use of 'Hindustani' type of instruments
by MSV etc etc. oru nAl iravu pagal pOl nilavu
is a well known song with great emotion.. but I
will put it only next to the above song.
kaiyOdu kai sErkkum kAlangaLE.. inimaiyAna
pAttu.. MSV's rubber stamp melody.
The two songs that have the best lyrical content
are: nalam kEtka vandhAyO (peN pArththa mAppiLLaikku)
and nErAna nedum sAlai. Although I am not
a big fan of MSV's singing, I like this song.. he
has sung nErAna.. very well, emotionally
and sweetly. I am reproducing below, a posting
that was made by my sister two years ago in the
Lyrics which are aptly written for music situations
thread..

My review...I tried listening to the songs I was most familiar with , deconditioning myself from the impressions already created over the years(which was a bit of an achievement;).
1. KayyOdu Kai sErkum.... PS solo
The song starts with an energetic spurt of violins and a small, lightning fast sitar piece combined with xylophone for PS to start the opening humming piece. Very festive feel indeed!!! The song is set to a reggaeish beat with three main instruments Dholak, Bongos and to a slightly lesser extent, tabla sharing the honours. In the very first hearing itself, the peppy anupallavi with sharp/short flute "instrusions" makes you sit up and take notice of it. The first interlude starts off with an accordian piece for the violin and xylophone to take over and there is a change of beat here that 'happens' with the flow . The stanzas are set to the same beat/tempo as the pallavi and end with PS humming (in the I stanza) and repeating the word 'VENdum' (II stanza) with a reflective feel and no beats. The catchy anupallavi is introduced at this point and the song is taken back to its pallavi seamlessly, all's well!! The second interlude starts with the sitar/xylophone combination and violin thrown in for good measure. The accordian piece following all this briskly cascades down for the II stanza to start. Fluency is the word that springs to mind and the feel/tempo/momentum built up in the prelude is maintained throughout the song. MSV's trademark, potent melody is another highlight.PS's voice is as good as it had always been in the early 70s. The song is set predominantly to Shankarabaranam and M2 introduced at the end of each stanza adds beauty to the melody.
Will continue tomorrow..

SK,
Isn't Kanna sugama, Krishna sugama (PS) from Kaviya Thalaivi? If so, IMHO that's the best one from that movie.

SL:
That was a nice (technical) viewpoint on kaiyOdu.
I hope you will take a long breath and come back
to write more, about other songs. I can understand
how difficult it is to listen to the songs with a
'new brain' but it will give freshness!
Ravy:
The great liking I have for en vAnaththil is just
a personal one. BTW, I very much like the kaNNA nalamA song too.. the picturization is also very
well done.. with the mother Sowkar Janaki displaying
emotions very very well.
Raghavan:
You have also added 'new viewpoints' to the songs.
Thanks.
