We can together sponsor an IR album !!!

Guys & gals, I have already put this stuff in one of the therads. But, owing to the poor response, I am starting it as a topic. I am sure if some of us get together, we can sponsor an album of say, IR's great BGM pieces or something like that. I really miss listening to them. I am sure we could raise the funds over a period of time.
Interested people, please respond in this thread. We will have to plan out the details also.

srinath,
i also read that thing about the french people liking edho mogam. i vaguely rememeber IR going on a world concert around 1982(?) and then after he came back he wrote a book titled 'edho mogam international'. i dont know how far is this true. i tend to agree with your points about giving them not -too-familiar, not-too-alien songs.
i guess in those 6-10 songs which we give him, we should also try to establish IR's versatility. all songs having emphasis on percussion on violins only would'nt be a good idea IMO. how about the following for the songn?
1. aruna girana - mindblowing! (or atleast any other guru song)
2. poongatru - common choice
3. edho mogam - has impressed everyone.
4. putham pudhu kaalai - great song+interludes
5. poove semboove(perhaps interludes alone?) - IR claims to have used max. no of instru for this song
6. naane naana - melody + flute/guitar prelude + violin interludes
7. en vaazhvile varum anbe - very good song + decent interludes.and u know what? one of the interludes in this song is exactly the same as that of poongaatru pudhdhiaanadhu which makes it a strong case for this song.
8. manidha manidha - great prelude, but i dont remember the interludes. unfortunately i found this song somewhere on the net, but just not able to remember now.
9. ninukori varanam- for its percussion alone in the first interlude!
10. ilaya nila - for its guitar alone!
i feel atleast one mallu song should be included as that's where raja has been at his best recently.

Vijay,
Exactly for the same reason that you cannot have both No.2 and No.7. And I would recommend No.2 strongly.

Guys,
I can make a CD compilation (CD-R actually) I have a CD-Writer but do not have all the albums you guys mention.
I have NBW, HTNI, I thirudAthE, Jhonny but not avathAram or others.
I still think we have to put HTNI & NBW in this because it is like a pre-qualification or whatever.

hi madhan,
thanks for forcing me to a five hours concert :-)
there are too many songs to include and too many to choose from. we might want to categorize and give choices in each category. i have identified at least one category with few good songs. in each category i have arranged the songs in the order of my preference.
Category 1: Operatic
(1) suttum chudar vizhip pArvaiyilE thUNdilidum dhEvi - siRaichchAlai (better to get malayALam version)
(2) oru nAl andha oru nAL - that dracula movie by nAsser? enna movienga adhu?
(3) dhEva sangItham nIyallE dhEvI varU varU - guru (malayALam)
Category 2: Instrumental
(1) Illusions - India 24 Hours
(2) Mozart I Love You - Nothing But Wind
(3) Heartbeats - India 24 Hours
Standbys: (1) Devotion - I24H (2) Any other number after Illusions in I24H (3) Don't Compare - HTNI (4) Study for violin - HTNI
Category 3: Violin scores
(1) Anandha rAgam kEtkum kAlam - pannIr pushpangaL.
(2) shrIrAmanin shrIdhEviyE anumAn unnaik kAkka - priyA
(3) O pApA lAli - gIthAnjali (the telugu version of idhayaththaith thirudAthE).
Category 4: Counterpoints and other WCM techniques
(1) guru charaNam nAthA thiruvadi charaNam - guru (malayALam)
(2) chandhirarum sUriyarum? - avathAram
Standbys: I can't think of any song that has complete WCM feel to it. most songs of IR has a counterpoint here, a "sonatina" there but a whole song which feels like a WCM song is missing. here is my list of songs which has at least one interlude which is based on some WCM techinque.
(1) endhap pUvilum vAsam uNdu - murattuk kALai
(2) pon veyilil - yAthrAmozhi (malayALam)
(3) pUndhaLirAda - pannIr pushpangaL
(4) rAjA kaiyya vachchA - apUrva sagOtharargaL
(5) ennuLLE ennuLLE - vaLLi
(6) O butterfly butterfly - mIrA
and many many more.
Category 4: Jazzy Compositions (not exactly jazz)
(1) azhagu azhagu dhEvadhai - rAja pArvari (look out for the second interlude)
(2) en gAnam - Ira vizhik kAviyangaL
Category 5: Fusion
(1) pUngARRu pudhidhAnadhu - mUnRAm piRai
(2) pUvE sempUvE un vAsam varum - thEnmozhi?
(3) EdhO mOgam Edho dhAgam - kOzhi kUvudhu
(4) endhan nenjil nIngAdha thenRal nIthAnA - kalaignan
(5) ninnukkOri varNam - agni natchaththiram (i prefer the thamizh version to the telugu one)
(6) pudhu mAppiLLaikku nalla yOgamadA - apUrva sagOtharargaL
(7) rambambam Arambam bambambam pErinbam - micheal madhana kAma rAjan
and many many more
Category 6: Miscellaneous ExcellentobiprashithamAs :-)
(1) chinnap puRa onRu eNNak kanAvinil - ???
(2) manjaL nilAvukku inRu orE sugam - dharma yudhdham?
(3) puththam pudhu kAlai ponniRa vELai -???
(4) andhi mazhai pozhigiRadhu - rAja pArvai
(5) oru thanga radhaththil and any song dharma yudhdham
(6) Ayiram malargaLE malarungaL - niRam mARAdha pukkaL
(7) malargaLil Adum iLamai pudhumaiyE - kalyANarAman
(8) thEnmallip pUvE - thyAgam?
and many many more like songs from nAdOdith thenRal, chinnap pasanga nAnga, chinnath thAyi ...
this is my final wish list. please add delete or whatever to this to arrive at the final six as may suit you all. you is going to bell the cat? meaning: who is volunteering to record the songs and mail to CSO? volunteers needed.
regards,
aruLarasan.

Too many cooks... :-)
My updated list -
1. Poongatru
2. Aruna Girana
3. Chandirarum Sooriyarum
4. Vegam Vegam
Still, I am confident only about Poongatru (100%) and Vegam Vegam (99.98%) ! The other two I have not heard recently.
I would suggest that someone give a short intro to IR in the CD/cassette/letter. Please no lengthy emotional letters ! No flowery language. Madhan, I am not an expert on this, but in the U.S language like this is not appreciated - it may show your proficiency in English, but does little to convey the point. If you keep it short and succint, it comes across as more professional.
The reasons behind my list are -
1. Good recording is available.
2. The tune is catchy enough without being distractingly so.
3. The orchestration is crisp. Not only the number of instruments, but also the control exercised over them matters a lot.
Can we please finalize atleast the guidelines if not the songs ? I think 4 to 6 songs are ample. Even 10 songs would be a tad too much. Or if you have gone ahead and already mailed the songs, please let us know !!! :-)

Sri:
Do you think they will be impressed if an Indian voice comes along with the violins and other orchestration ? This is what I am very much skeptical about. I know what KJY's/ SJ's voice means to us, but to them..?

Srinath, I agree with you regarding not bombarding the CSO with too many compositions - but my fear is that it should become TOO LESS in number - you know what I mean, - paadhi saapitta maadhiri irukkakkoodaadhu avangalukku - but still I agree with your point - send them a cassette/CD with the best of 6-8 compositions and then let them respond which I am sure they are GOING TO, and then slowly draw them out with more and more juicy carrots dangling in front of their eyes - but make sure that the first carrot is JUICY enough for them to get interested.
Apart from the four you have listed, I would also include 5.Oru naal andha oru naal (as Arul has mentioned the choric effect would be appealing to them definitely ) 6.Pani vizhum malar vanam (for the avante garde use of so many elements) 7.Paruvamey (for the interludes), 8.O Butterfly (for the chords)
OK Srinath, let me try and make the intro.letter succinct and in American slang , I will make it "snappier" !! I will post the modified letter today evening - in the meantime someone should get hold of Rex in India - yenbaa MS, neenga Rexukku nalla dosth acchey - try get hold of him and ask for his suggestions regarding the recording stuff.
In the meantime, I am likely to go to Chennai this weekend - I will try and meet Maestro. and let him know of what is going on - I feel it is very much essential that the principal man should be knowing of what is happening !! Illaatti, oru naal dhidudhippunu, CSO IRai approach seiyya, IR onnumey puriyaamal thiru thirunnu vizhikka apparam vishayam Mouli pada comedy maadhiri aagividakkoodaadhu !!

srinAth,
i will come up with a letter tomorrow. my wish list is to provide viewers with choices we have. nothing more than that. i would also like to restrict the number songs to 6. this is the upper limit i would like to fix. also i would like to include one completely instumental peice (but the unfortunate thing is i don't like any of his instrumentals completely - he has spoilt most of them with poor percussions :-( ). we also should take in to consideration our "client" - it is a WCM professional. hence we give her/him something in which she/he is an expert.
i you would let me, i would like you to choose between pUngARRu and vEgam vEgam. also between aruNa kiraNa and chandhirarum sUriyarum. from general opinion so far we have
(1) pUngARRu pudhidhAnadhu
(2) aruNa kiraNa dhIpam pApak kadalil udhayamAgunnu
I personally would like to subsitute guru charaNam charaNam nAthA thiruvadi charaNam. this one, to me, seems to have better orchestration combined with beautiful vocals (a pseudo-chorale?). aruNa kiraNa seems to have lot of "unnecessary" (blasphemay :-( ) orchestration. same goes for dhEva sangItham. i might be wrong becuase i haven't listened to the songs in a good music system for some time now. (cassette vAngip pOna friend thiruppith thara mAttEngaRAn :-) ). the only qualm with guru charaNam is that there is no variation in the percussion (rhythm) throughout the song and hence it might sound a bit like a pop.

Arul:
I am afraid you may be wrong about your interpretation about Aruna kirana and Devasangeetham. If the DFers need to scrutinize and analyze it to pieces, I can host the mp3s of all the five songs of Guru in my site.
Madhan:
I shall try contacting Rex as you say. But, as I had requested you priorly, please give me a clear outline of what you expect of me, so that I can help better. I am not a very good planner, but if assigned a role, can/will take it seriously.
Regards
MS
