  I started this topic to help our TFM surfers to clear their questions on several musical instruments. As an example to begin with:
  
  The second interlude of 'mInkodith thEril manmatha raajan' (karumbu vil) has a rarely used instrument. It sounds like kind of a violin. It also sounds like saarangi. Can anybody help me out?

  attention, let's start with songs which had
  beautiful use of not-so-common instruments

  Let me start.
  
  In Karnan, almost all songs had beautiful usage
  of Sarangi. (I think Ram Narayan played these.)
  No over-usage, it added extra beauty to the

  In the movie, "Aayirathil Oruvan", MGR sings the song "Atho Antha Paravai Pola Vaazhavendum" with a "Yaazh"(that is the Yaazh, right?) and I don't know if it was actually used in the song - Anybody with the knowledge or info?

  Oru naaL podhuma - Thiruvilayadal has a line 'kuzhal endrum yaazh endrum silar kooruvar'. Wondering if the Yaazh was actually used in that song.......

  Talknig about instruments, it seems like bangos and congas died
  with the exit of MSV from TFdom. I can't find any of these in any
  song released in this decade and very few in the last decade. Of
  course, one does in deed find some cheap imitations (or
  what do they call it - sampling?). Same thing with trumpet et al.
  
  IR uses sAragi and shehnAyi a fairly large number considering the
  alienness of these instruments to TN.

  Is Jaladharangam used in any of the TFM. I remember at least one song 'Adi penney...' from Mullum Malarum has an equivalent sound of Jaladharangam in the interludes?..this instrument is very difficult to swaramize and there are very few artists playing this instrument at the present time.

  Talking about instrumets in tamil film songs,is there someone besides MD to take care of arrangements. In those days, Visvanathan Ramamoorthy had an assistant named HENRY DANIEL,
  was this person actually responsible for some

  I think Jaladharanagam or its electronic equivalent is used in the second interlude of En Veetu Thotathil song(gentleman).
  
  Sockalingam:
  
  MSV used Henry Daniel to write notations(western) for the song and bgm. Besides HD, MSV used Joseph Krishna for the same. In MSV-TKR combination, while MSV took charge of song compositions, TKR handled the orchestration.

  Henry Daniel came as a raw in mid 50s and he was trained throughly by my friend RAMU(TKR)in orchestration.Henry had western music backround and TKR taught him the art of converting carnatic swaras to western notes.
