Of late there had been enough panning on Deva for giving wonderful "remix / xerox" songs. But I feel that he has done a decent job in giving some original compositions too. eg.
(1)Porul thedum bhoomiyil (By chitra in Kalki)
(2)Metti Metti velli metti (By SJ in Pullai kuttikkaran)
(3)Konja Naal Poruthalaiva
(4)Un udhattoram sivappai
I wish TFM fans contribute to this thread without digressing to cast criticizms on him.

Murali,
The Anandhabhairavi song, Konja Naal Poru Thalaivaa.. is a copy of Thannan thanimayilae, Udal Thallaadum vayadhinilae from the old movie.

i guess making this kind of list is easier than say trying to list out all of deva's copied songs!!

"-mudhan mudhalil paarththaen kaadhal vandhadhu" ? Can someone clarify if this was the song copied from "Sochenge Tumhe Pyar Karen Ke Nahin" - from Sadak, I think ? The lyrics (mudhal, mudhalil..) sound like the copied song that I heard sometime before coming to the U.S.
Udhaya, you must be pretty tired of me now :)
What a pity ! Even in the "Original songs of Deva" thread, it is only his copies that are being spoken of ! I am not participating anymore :))

Srinath, old buddy, I never tire of a good sport like you. Besides, only one song listed here is questionable to you, the rest I have mentioned are enough for me to appreciate Deva. A song that sounds good to me is a good song regardless of who birthed it. Deva happens to have produced a few of those and I will always give him his due for that.

I am impressed how Deva has turned himself around.
For someone who hasn't given any memorable tunes
for the initial part of his career, he has given
many nice tunes in recent tunes ("Asaai" etc..)
I quite enjoy a few of his recent songs, including
copied ones..
"Manam Urumbthe unnai" is a favorite of mine..
About the above list,
isn't "Uyire Uyire nalamthana" lifted from
"Chalte Chalte" ?
Also the violin interludes in "Oru mani adithaal"
are from "Netru Illada Maatram" of "Pudhiya Mugam"
About "Annamalai", the song "Kodayil Thaalam poo"
has appeared in a telugu Chiranjeevi movie "Anjani Putruda" (Music by Raj-Koti). Both the movies were released around the same time, I think. So don't know which one is copied.

I am sure if another film comes with a name "Manam Urumbthe unnai", DEVA can lift tunes by IR and complete his work. Going by the name , I don't know if it can be a tamil movie. I was ROTFL after reading this! (Please take this in a lighter vein. )

The song "Manam Virumbudhey unnai" as vijay opines is a lift from "Mana vyala kim" (Carnatic). Hence I think it is out of this discussion.

Well, Ok ! Since Udhaya isn't tired of me yet, I guess ought to try harder to bug him ;-)))
Considering the fact that we are working with very limited resources here (Deva's original numbers :)), we'll need a wider scope for discussion. How about extending this topic to discussing about any originality from Deva - not just tunes or entire songs - even a unique style of BGM or perhaps the way he uses a heavy percussion based 2nd interlude for a lot of songs (like Autokaaran, Style Style, etc.,) ? I have atleast one good word to say for Deva - he is very innovative with his beats. Actually, a drummer friend of mine (and IR fan) once commented that Deva's Tabla beats are more creative than IR's !!! Since we can't have a qualitative comparision between the individuals, I guess it is fair enough to say that Deva's beats are among the best that we can get to hear in TFM. I believe he is also supposed to be an accomplished tablist - though I am not sure of the veracity of that statement.
Anyway, for all those feel I am too harsh with Deva, one number I find myself humming very often is "Oru Penn Pura". In fact, I know the lyrics by heart. But I feel, Deva often loses focus toward the ending of each Charanam. This is prominent in "Thanga Magan" and even in "Oru Penn Pura" - the tune at the following lines -
Paalavanam Kadandhu Vandaen
Paadhangalai, Aaravidu in the first stanza or
Vizhi irandum Kaazhum Varai,
Azhuduvittaen Aanavarai in the second one.
And as a special request to everyone else, please keep Deva's copies out of this topic. If I can do it, you can too !!!

Udhaya,
Senguruvi senguruvi from Mr.Murthy is a lift from salil chowdhry's chemmeen (*ing nazir , sheela and madhu). The song is "kadalin akkara pOnOrE..."
sigappu lOlAkku again is a lift from a mallu song. (I don't remember the lyrics.)

hey,
yaaravathu "ninaithEn vanthaai" songs kEttEngalaa?? Most of the songs are good.
There is one song called "MalligayE, MalligayE"
which is good though the tune has been copied
from a Telugu movie. Other songs are "Vanna nilavE" by Hariharan, and "EnnavalE, ennavalE" by Mano. Both are worth listening.

Recently, there was a "thunukku news" about Deva
in Times of India saying Deva as the most sought after MD in South India. He is busy flying
between Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderbad. It seems he is one of most affordable MDs for making low
budget movies with one or two good numbers per movie. Whether he copies from somewhere is different.

Is it true that Deva copied his own tune and got kicked
- From: shankar (@ webgate0.mot.com)
on: Sat Oct 24 07:25:29 EDT 1998
Magi,
Deva's copying in "ninaithEn vandhAi is justified as the movie itself is a remake of a super-hit movie "peLLi sandhadi".
This case is similar to that of kalAkAr where k-ji&A-ji unabashedly copied IR's payaNangaL mudivathillai in the name of remake.

what about the song, is it from the
same telugu movie which was dubbed???
- From: magi (@ horus.erlm.siemens.de)
on: Sat Oct 24 10:20:19 EDT 1998
lakshmanan,
many MDs have done this copying 'his own' earlier,
I feel. Because if a song becomes a hit, then the
songs which come immediately after this from the
same MD will have
some influence on the hit song, either in the
tune or the beat or some music pieces.
about deva, though deva copies lot of songs
I think he is talented. He does not take much
time for a movie it seems. But still he is
surviving in the film industry, which means
he produces something which the audience like.
Given enough time, I think he can also produce
quality music. That's what I feel. That way
he is better than many music directors in
south India.

shankar, "chenguruvi" is not the copy of the Chemmeen song, that would be "Manjal Nilaavin Iravil" also from Thirumoorthy.
Uyirae Uyirae Nalamthaana for Chalthae Chalthae is kind of a stretch.
It's unfortunate that you guys spend so much time trying to veto songs a couple of songs from my list but none of you seem to have heard of the obscure ones I have posted. If there ever was an MD whose bad work overshadows his good work, it would be Deva. For every high profile lift of his, there's a mini-gem of a melody forgotten in a low-budget movie. While the knocks on him may be well deserved, his originals deserve at least faint praise. If you guys can't bring yourself to do that and are forever going to go by the blanket accusation, "he probably copied it somewhere", it would be a shame because you are going to miss out on some good songs.
Deva consistantly produces good(not exquisite), tasty (not very tasteful), infectious(not innovative)sandhams which get grossly overlooked. If you take away the discordant Western riffs that Deva imposes on many downhome melodies, there's a pleasant sandham hidden there. A prime example of this is "Kaadhali Kaadhali", which is one of the best songs by Hariharan to date. The lines:
nadanthavai ellaam kanavugal endru
kanimozhi maanae marandhidu indru
jenma bandham vittup poagumaa oh oh oh
have infectious asaivugal. Any halfway decent bathroom singer would plunge into those lines full tilt.
In food there are so many classes: five star, three star, saravana bhavan, etc.
Why can't this exist in music, least of all TFM?
- From: vijay (@ 129.252.22.246)
on: Sat Oct 24 23:41:44 EDT 1998
udhaya,
if such a categorization existed in TFM, then deva would be classified under the 'roadside by night hotel food'. basically i find sophistication severly lacking in deva's songs. most of the time his songs like thangamagam seem loud and jarring. his orchestration is not crisp. he uses 1001 instruments in this song but ultimately the interlude sounds so much mediocre.
unfortunately the songs of deva which i like are
not originals. they are meenamma and manam virumbudhe unnai.
also i hate the so called pseudo-carnatic half baked carnatic songs of deva like nagumo etc.
just for the sake of composing a carnatic based song he does songs like these. they are neither
impressive nor do they have a good orchestration. his class is way below that of IR's sindhubhairavi.
