HI SK
Correct me if I'm wrong.
The last 8 lines in the song "Palapalppa X2 palaragama irukkuthu poottu" has no mention of Poottu.
Hi Kamala
Welcome to this forum.I think U will enjoy this discussion vey well.

Pala:
You are right about the poottu song. The last
few lines have 'sAvi' in them. But most lines
before them have a "ttu" as the ending sound..
poottu, pOttu, kAttu, kettu, puttu, kittu etc.
Kamala:
One request.. please don't type everything in
capital letters. It makes reading difficult.
I am not sure whether many songs that you have
listed have the same ending sounds in almost all
lines of the song.

SK, Pala, Bhoori & Pal,
Been out for the past four days in Chennai to get my visa to the US and got back yesterday. Four days of TFM Forum blindness. Glad to be back.
Pala: Thanks for writing up the lyrics of Ayiram karangaL neetti. I was supposed to do that job. Let us see if I can write my comments on it in the next couple of days.

Hi guys,
The greatness of Aayiram Karangal Neetti lies in the cadence/chandam of that song. Somehow, Kavignar with his words creates an ambience that is similar to that of say Venkatesa Suprabhatam in the morning! I dont know whether this effect was intended or not.
I think the lines read
Irul Neekkum Thandhai Potri. As Bhaskar remarked sometime back, Irul Neekkam Thandhai Potri is meaningful, but I think the former one is the right version.
Also, Thayinum Parindhu Sala Chagalarai is right, not Sara Chaglarai.
Thulangidum is right, not Thuvangidum.

Bhoori
Thanx for the corrections.
As Bhasker pointed out the first para explains the values of the sun:
1000m karangalneetti-radiant rays of the sun that appear like a 1000 outstretched arms.
Anaikkindra thaaye potri-Prayer to the mother who hugs with the 1000 arm(refer to the streaking rays)
Arul ponggum mugathai kaatti-Appearance of the powerful face.
Irul neekkam thanthaai potri-Bringing out brightness from darkness.
Would this para be more logical if it was written in the following way:
Arul ponggum mugathai kaatti
Irul neekkam thanthaai potri
Aayiram karngal neetti
Anikkindra thaaye potri

Hi Guys,
Bhoori is right. The song has the cadence of a chant.
Do you notice another thing about Ayiram karangal neetti? Almost, every line has a literal meaning and a metaphoric meaning.
You may also notice that TMS' voice stands out alone in the following line. That is because Sirgazhi doesn't sing this line and if he did, and also since his pitch is higher than TMS', it may have drowned TMS' voice.
Thazhaikkum orr(one) uyirgatkellaam thunaikkarm koduppaai potri
What does this line mean? That we will keep worshipping the sun until it goes nova?
Naanilam vula naal mattum potruvom potri potri
Overall, easily one of Kannadhasan's best efforts in a movie full of terrific songs.

Bhoori!
I liked the comparison of Suprabatham.
Bhaskar,
Thai in first line and thanthai in second line is right like we says ammavum neeye appavum neeye. Moreover, Dad is supposed to teach his son to come out of darkness in those days.
Thazhaikkum Oruyirgatkellaam thunaikkarm koduppaai potri
Here I think kavignar means plants as Oruyir. Sun helps the plant to grow greener.

Bhoori,Bhasker & Pal
'Thazhaikkum oruyirgatkellaam thunaikkaram koduppai potri'
I think rference here is made to all things that have life.Thazhaikkum is usually referred to plants and alike.
But when oruyirgatkellaam is used in conjunction with thazhaikkum,it refers to all new borns such as - human beings, creatures, insects, reptiles, birds, animals and germinating vegetation.
'Naanilam vula naal mattum'
Naan nilaththil(boomiyil) irukkum naal varayil. This could have the following connotations:1) till death 2)till last breath or 3)till the soul leaves the body.
- From: Sridhar K (@ elmo.nordstrom.com) on: Fri Oct 15 12:34:13 EDT 1999
Hi Pala,
'Naanilam vula naal mattum'...Naanilam refers to the mother earth.
Till the existence of the earth, we will keep praising you. This is the actual meaning.

Bhoori & Pal,
aayiram karangaL neetti cadence sounds very similar to the chanting of manthra pushpam which starts with yOpaam pushpam vEdaa pushpavaan prajaavaan pasumaan bhavati.
This is part of the taittariya upanishad found in the krishna yajur vEdaa, and is sung while praying to the sun god or during the offering of flowers to a deity at the end of a puja.

Kanchana, Bhoori and Pal
(Kanchana welcome back)
It is interesdting to know some background to the composition of this great song. MSV and Kannadasasn were in Bangalore for 15 days to compose the songs for Karnan. (Some of the very best songs of Kannadasan appartently were born in Bangalore.)For this specific situation which is adoration of Sun God, some Brahmin priests were brought into the presence of Kannadasan, and they chanted the manthras. Kannadasan requested for the meaning of the lines and translated into Tamil, of course not literally, but still retaining the essencve therof. It was very well sung by TMS and picturised on Nadigar Thilakam. When the film was released and the song became a hit, there were a lot of positive comments on this portion of the song. The Brahmin priestly community paid tribute to Kannadasan saying that it is most rare to effect an able translation of those original manthras into Tamil. They commented that the essence and spirit of the origninal manthras had been well retained without compromising onn the literary form and emotion in lyrics. By far this is still one of the greatest works of Kannadasan. Unfortunately this costume masterpiece of Bantulu (Karnan) was a great production as a movie, but commercially ruined his fortune as the returns were not there. It was Ayirathil Oruvan that rehabilitated him in later years.

Manisekaran: Thanks for the background on Aayiram Karangal Neetti. I always wondered about the cadence of this song. Nice to know that this was intended.
I hv seen Karnan. While the songs were excellent and the production values were "rich", the movie was overall bad. Karna, as in Mahabharatha, is a flawed character. By projecting the "heroish" qualities of Karna only, this movie didnt do justice to this character. I thought the script was quite bad and Sivaji, as usual in many of his movies went overboard with his hamming. Why do our heroes have to be so outlandish?
But the songs were excellent. I hv never seen the voices of Seergazhi, TMS, Trichy Loganathan and PBS put to better effect than the quartet of related songs singing Karnans praise. I can remember only Nanich Chivandana, Enna Koduppan now. Can someone mention the other two?

Bhoori, the other two,
Mazhai Kodukkum kudayumoru (seerkazhi)
Mannavar porutKaLai ( TMS).
