Unmai,
Baba takes the cake. I here Rajni's next project is going to be called 'Black Sheep'. The poster will have B.S. in short form.
The story for this was given to him by a Swami who used to have a dinasour as his vahanam. That's how old he is.
They still looking for another fat, old actress to replace Manisha.

I don't know why Aalavandhan songs are so thoroughly hated in this forum. I personally liked them, especially the theme that comes in the song "Kadavul Paadhi".

I am not sure whether Aalavanthan is a flop or hit. But for Baba, it is too early to say.
Baba has created few history as follows:
1. First time the ticket price increase more than Rs200
2. Released in more theaters (3 times)
3. Good response for Audio Coupons
4. Baba in Post Cards (fisrt one)
I am so excited that Baba is released in 17 Theaters in Chennai. This is really good.
Albert, Satyam (2), Rohini (5), Abirami, Biruntha, Mayajal (4), Uthayam (2) and Prathana.
In Madurai - 5 Theaters, Trichy - 5 Theaters, Thanjavur - 3 Theaters.
So Senthil, Don't come to conclusion so fast. Lets wait and see.

Baba is a 'Colossal Flop' and everyone who has put money into this venture has lost their shirt.
Just to recount a few plus (???) points that Baba had before it was (unfortunately) released:
Popular opinion and plus pointsBefore Baba's Release -
1. Rajini is a 'Super Star'with mass (??) appeal
2. His movie is releasing after a 3 year hiatus
3. Avar vanthu nintha podum, nadantha podum, moonjia kaatina podum
4. 50,000 (supposedly) fans associations supporting the movie
5. All out media backing unseen in Indian film history
After Release - Actual Fact:
1. Rajini is just a 'Sumaar Star' with his appeal limited to the first 2 shows only
2. Popular wish is that the 3 year hiatus was a 30 year one
3. Ninda, Nadantha, Moonjiya Kaamicha podum had an 'In your face' rejection the likes of which Tamil Cinema has never seen
4. Looks more like 500 fans association and the rest were like the here now.. gone now finance companies
5. Egg on the face of the tamil media even though some magazines like Kumudam are defiant and act as though 'ennathaan vizhundu vaarinaalum, kuzhi thondi podachalum, Meesa mellai mannu vottalannu solraanga'
Some people on this site do not know when to be smart and accept defeat graciously

Aalavandhan was a sincere effort with some hitches in the screenplay... musically it was damn good... its one of my fav music albums in recent times... terrific performance by kamal. baba... havent seen the movie yet... waiting for "Indiya tholaikaatchigalil mudhal muraiyaaga" :-))... musically, Rahman did a great mess of a job. This is what happens when u force a fellow to compose music for urself when he's not interested or busy with some other work. (same with IR did for "Raasaiyya"). I feel Deva would hv done a lot better. btw, both the movies hv Suresh Krissna as the director...!!!

Thyagaraja, Thiruvanmiyur is outskirt of chennai. If you include those theaters, it will be more than 35 theaters.

sorry,
i don't know much about the chennai. Whenever movie is advertised, they don't put Thyagaraja Theater, Thiruvanmiyur in main list. But Pirathana, they put it.
Just for curosity, please tell me more about it. They judge by theater standard or capacity of crowd?

Alavandaan songs are sligtly unconventional ..that is why they were not a hit ..
- From: Baba-vandhan (@ 198.73.152.100)
on: Thu Aug 22 09:56:56 EDT 2002
I felt Alavandhan was over done in some scenes.....especially the climax.
Also, there were a lot of un-necessary elements such as Kamal's favourite 'Free Sex for All' theme. This was totally unwanted for the flow of the movie. Kamal just had to include it for some unknown reason (I wonder if he will promote this to his daughters as well)
Other than that it was a very different TAMIL movie.
Baba - They think everyone who walks into a theater is total idiot with a single digit IQ. I payed $15.00 CAD for the ticket. I would not have been bitter if I only payed $5.00.
There are some scenes that will satisfy Rajini fans. But most are just a waste of film.

Both the moveies are a big blow for the "EGO" of so called superstars of Tamil (Rajini and Kamal).
Both the guys thought that they are smarter than the rest of us and the "Tamizh Koorum Nallulagam" will listen/watch whatever S**T that they will do on the screen.
Unfortunately they both were wrong.

'Baba' sets a record in Andhra!
Looks like the 'Baba' magic works across state borders too. The high-profile launch of the Telugu version of 'Baba' has reaped rich dividends with the film registering unprecedented openings all over Andhra Pradesh. With Rajini quoting a whopping Rs.10 crores, many regular buyers like A.M.Rathnam are supposed to have backed out, forcing Rajini to release the film himself, in Nizam and Andhra. He is believed to have sold it for Rs.2.5 crores for the ceded area. This has surprised trade pundits since even Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna have not crossed the 2-crore mark till date, despite having a considerable following in the region. Now that the Tamil superstar has outscored the Telugu local stars in terms of 'price', it remains to be seen if he can set a record in collections too. 'Baba' registered 100% openings, despite the Chiranjeevi-starrer Indra (which is a big hit), being directly pitted against it in all centres. Going by the openings, trade circles predict that the film could collect more than Rs.4 crores in the 'first' week itself. Unfortunately, the film has received 'divided' feedback, since viewers are unable to understand the theme of 'goon-turned-god man' and are also unable to follow the politically-loaded punchlines which are state-specific. Moreover, A R Rehman's different score has not impressed them. However, for a Tamil film dubbed into Telugu and released in Andhra, Baba has already set a record... will he continue to do so?

Asha,
Kamal is used to flops - Hey Ram, Guna, Mahanadhi and so on.
MOst of his 'ambitious' projects end up us flops.
But it is not so with Rajini.
Also, Kamal never tried to promote himself as a demi-god, which Rajini has.
Baba will be a huge blow for Rajini. But if it was Kamal, he would just go off and do another comedy to show his marketability.
