Song of the Day: Samrat Asokan Drama from annaiyin aaNai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/sivaji.rm
- Saravanan writes:
October 1st is the birth date of a legend, and though now it is more than two years since Vizhuppuram Chinnaiah Ganesan passed away, he still lives in the hearts and memories of generations of Tamils, for whom he will forever be the greatest actor ever.
Today, for a change, let us listen to some powerful dialogues in the voice of our Nadigar Thilagam- the famed ‘Samrat Asokan’ drama from Paragon Pictures’ Annaiyin Aanai- 1958.
It was from his ‘Boys’ Company’ background and the innumerable ‘parts’ that he got to play on stage that Sivaji honed his histrionic skills. His spellbinding performance in the play "Sivaji Kanda Hindu Samrajyam" led to Periyaar EVR conferring on him the sobriquet ‘Sivaji’.
Sivaji’s eloquent oratorical skills were marvelously put to use by intelligent filmmakers of the 50s, who inserted such stage plays in their films. Other instances of such memorable insertions were ‘Anarkali’ in Illara Jothi-1954 and ‘Socrates’ in Raja Rani- 1956. The therukkoothu in Navaraathiri was another brilliant insertion. And years later, the magic was still evident in films like Raman Ethanai Ramanadi- 1970 and Rajapart Rangadurai-1973.
* * * *
When I got the songs of Annaiyin Aanai (Music: SMS) recorded many years back in Chennai, the old-timer in charge (from whom I learned lots of tfm stuff), told me with a enigmatic smile that he had inserted a ‘filler’ as there was some more space in the tape. And when I got home and listened to it, imagine my pleasurable surprise when I heard this celebrated drama!
I have heard that this play was written by Thanjaivaanan (real name Govindaramanujam), who wrote many such plays for Sivaji. He also wrote lyrics for a handful of film songs, the most popular one being ‘Mannulagil indru devan irangi varugiraan’ (Punitha Anthoniyar)

Saravanan,
Many years later, in 1975-77, in 'rOjaavin raajaa'also, there is a small stage show by Sivaji ( supposed to be a student of College of Engg.-Guindy, with Cho, AVM Rajan etc.,!)as 'Saamraat asOkan'.(with a comical prelude by Suruli!)

It certainly was a loud and clear -:)- reminder of the era of dramatic acting. What a delivery! To view it critically with a bias towards modern and post modern acting style is to miss the whole experience. It is analogous to calling Casablanca a clichéd movie.
Great idea to have included this in SOTD. Hope Socrates, paraa sakthi, kattabomman etc will follow soon.

this reminds me of a similar piece by Manorama.
During the Kargil crisis, the film industry arranged a televised fund-raising event. There were the usual assorted dance, song, mimicry, comedy sequences that are hardly worth a mention. Then, Manorama did a 20-minute monologue in which she portrayed the literaty-fame, almost sterotypical thamizh thAi who sends her husband & sons to the war and loses them in battle. It was one of most outstanding pieces of cathartic dramatism that I've ever seen. made me wonder about the unrealized potential of this wonderful artiste. a classic case of movie-killed-the-drama-star, to misquote the Buggles.

Song of the Day: urugidum vELaiyilum from dhaagam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/urugidum.rm
- Thanks to SK for this extremely rare song. Sung by S.Janaki. The music director is M.B.Srinivasan.
- This was the second film for MBS, after Paadhai theriyudhu paar. This was a movie directed by Babu Nandankode, *ing Muthuraman and Nandhita Bose.
- The clip contains the last bit of KJY's short piece "vaanamengum parithiyin jOthi", followed by SJ's smooth rendition of this slow, soft song. The song is set in Sahana. Not sure who the lyricist is. The lyrics is notable:
urugidum vELaiyilum

Song of the Day: aththaan en aththaan from paava mannippu.
1. The song: http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/aththaan.rm
2. MSV's comment on the song: http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/aththaanmsv.rm
- One of my favorite P.Suseela songs. Music by MSV-TKR. Written by Kannadasan.
- PS has rendered this slow song in the most beautiful manner. The pregnant pause before "eppadi solvEnadi", the background strings, short stanzas all enrich this song. I somehow feel that Kannadasan hasn't done full justice to this song. He has played with words ending in "aththaan", but further clever wordplay seems to be missing. In the pallavi, he uses "avar", but later uses "azhaiththaan siriththaan aNaiththaan" etc. Probably could have used "avan ennaiththaan" in the pallavi, instead of avar.
- Listen to the rare clip of MSV commenting on the song. It is pretty interesting. He mentions that Kannadasan had written this song, approached several MDs, who couldn't do justice to the lyrics. He then came to MSV and asked him to compose a tune for that song: "kenjinaar saar!". MSV too mentions that the pauses between the words came naturally (AvM chettiyar said "veththalaip paakku madichchup pOdara nEram irukku!"). MSV says that the gap showed the vetkam of the heroine, the viraga dhaabam. Thanks to SK for this rare clip and the song.
- Lyrics in our Pazhaiya Paadal Pakkam: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/aththaan.html
- Notes for the song: http://www.newtfmpage.com/notes/old/ath_pm.txt
- P.Suseela solos: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/23522.14753.04:45:24.html
- As MSV says, the song has enchanted people all over the world, for generations.

bb: Nice song . It reminds me of my days in IISc. I saw this movie in Bangalore when I was a student there. Unfortunately, this movie and songs always remind me of the anti-Tamil protests in Bangalore those days. The protesters demanded that the theatres screen a Kannada movie for every Tamil movie. But, the problem was that they produced less than 15 Kannada movies a year against 70 + movies in Tamil. Looks like things have not changed very much in 50 years.
You can find inconsistency in movie lyrics by any lyricist. Kannadasan is no exception!
Thanks for the song and the memories it brings back.
