I wanted to start this thread to highlight some of the music directors who probably deserve / deserved more than what they had got. Probably with the movie being successful, we would have probably had a different crop of people ruling the roost today?!?
Balabarathy:
I would probably place him in the 'most unfortunate' list. I liked some of the songs in Amaravathi. He had also scored the title music for a tamil serial called Chellamma - it was wonderful. Thalaivasal was scored by him, but I haven't heard the songs yet.
Soundaryan:
He's another unfortunate MD - moreso because his first movie was actually commercially successful (Cheran Pandiyan). He also had the courage to maintain his own unpretentious style of composition. His songs in "Sindhu Nadhi Poo" - especially "Athi Vadaiyile", "Adiye Adi", "Mathalam Kottudhadi" were all beautiful compositions - unfortunately the movie let him down. I guess he's scoring for a new movie now - Let's hope he does well
Mahesh:
If Nammavar had been successful, we definitely would have had more movies from him before his early demise. His compositions had a different flavour of freshness associated with it.
Karthikraja:
Another one of the 'most unfortunate' MD's. With the exception of dum dum dum, I think all his movies flopped commercially, despite the audio doing well. He still sticks to his own style of composition - which is refreshing. I hope he'll be some one to reckon with in the near future.
Please add more to this list - or you can also add more about the people listed above. I wonder if IR's name would be on the list above if Annakili had flopped :)

A.R.Rahman ... he deserves a break !! :)
I think this topic will have a huge reply, i am going to be insulted of idiot who have no music sense, etc, etc. But it is exactly what i am thinking ! ARR needs a super hit album after 2 years of flop !!

Karthik Raja - "Unfortunate" ?
I think he is the most fortunate MD, depsite churning out turkeys after turkeys he still manages to get offers.
When pace bowling is the topic and Mcgrath/Ambrose/Garner are the bench marks you don t call Bharath Arun/T A Shekhar "Unfortunate"- they simply does not belong to the higher league.
I would be suprised & pleased if KR manages one "musical hit" in his whole career.

Mahesh is dead, let him rest in peace.
You forgot one more. Ilayaraja.
He should be given a complete break - from composing ever again for Tamil movies. One trash after another for the past eight nine years.
Haven't we suffered enough? :)

Arjun!!
He always hangs around with a keyboard and THREATENs that he is gonna do music for his next movie(probably for what he directs). This was said about him from the break he got in 'Gentleman'. But somehow he 'compells' himself to get music from VS or ARR.
I read in rahmanOnline that he sang a song for Parasuram and is jumping around now about his musical abilities. We saw him 'Dance'(Wing^Wing) a lot in the movie 7-Malai.Yappa enna torture...

I wish Ranjit Barot had continued.
Also Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
In the list originally given, my only wish is Mahesh, who is no more.
But I am happy that Vidhyasagar finally got his dues.

Sirpi began decently enough. But caused his own misfortune.

Looks like there's a hex on the name Kumar with a V initial. V.Kumar's gems got drowned in the MSV-KVM-IR era. Didnt get blockbuster movies. Much like leggie V.V.Kumar who rarely got chances despite a 5-wkt haul on debut in the 60s.
OISG, Sekar was real good, better than Srinath. Faster than Kapil on the 82-83 Pak tour, he would have reaped a bounty if not for shoddy slip-catching.(He got in after a 9-54 against Kerala in Ranji)

We had Kailash Gattani & Pandurang Salgonkar-fastest at their times never made it.Yograj was faster than Kapil when he toured NZ in 1980-81 series.but test cricket demands something up there other than sheer pace!
I had watched TAS at some local tournaments..a typical local chennai product...he was destined to show his prowess only against the likes of Kerala.Ditto for Arun.....clumsy..!
Agreed VV Kumar -V Kumar comparison!I would agree for Balabarathy s case on similar lines. But KR,Soundaryan,Sirpi certainly do not deserve a place in the top league.I would even place Sabesh-Murali ahead of them.(Under this treaty Sabesh has agreed NOT TO SING!)

Talking of MDs from other states, Devendran and Vijay Bhasker did well in the limited opps they got. Good that VS is carving his own niche and not unlucky like them.
Dig:
OISG, TAS was best of the lot in S.Ind at that time. Consider the fact that Vasudevan, Venkat(400+), Raghuram Bhat, Vijayakrishna, Narasimha Rao regularly got dustbowls. At that TN had part-timers like V.Siva opening the bowling.
B.Arun, definitely not upto it. I remember a disdainful inside-out 4 by a charging Miandad at Sharjah 87. That ended BA's confidence and 3 month international career.

TR.... vintage TR stuff is damn good but he scr**ed his own happiness by churning out "dai dai digri doi kathirikolu" typa songs.

He deserves a break in the industry. His songs are still heard. For example, LOVE TODAY was a super hit.

YSR, even though he is doing a lot of projects and producing some great quality music, people are not willing to give him a break and admit that he is currently one of the best MD's in TFM. Why do people have to constantly compare him to ARR?

OISG ,
Iam not sure what made u to make such statements ..I think you are going by purely by the success of movies ...I feel u have to see the point that KR music is very much orginal and he does not use loops often ..He relying more on compositions than on just sounds ....
well,kR defintely has given some good hits
1.Ullasam
2.Grahan
3.DUMM DUMM DUMM
4.Ullam Kollai Poguthey
5.ALBUM
6.Kadhala Kadhala
7.Naam Iruvaar Namakku Iruvaar
The only average album he gace was vanchinathaan and to an extent ennaku oru Magan pirrapen ...

In TFM, a MD's Success in the initial days depends mainly on how he moves with other collegues, how he respects others / how felxible the MD with others. In other words, if the MD is heavy headed, that heaviness will bring him down. Even though a MD can be very talented and know more about music, the MD would not be considered as his PERSONAL / MAN MANAGEMENT is not good enough.
IMO thats y MDs like Bala Bharathy are not always in the limelight even though they are lusically very talented than most of the FAMED MDs in TFM now.
For Ex take our Grt TFM Copy Cats Mr. Deva, Mr. SA Raj Kumar (who proclaims himself to be the next IR - I dunno what he has got in him to give such a statement, atlest he cud have said am the next ARR in the HAIRSTYLE), Mr. Sirpi etc. Even though they are not that musically talented they were very humble which got them upto this stage.
So its just not TIME / LUCK that gets a MD to stardom but also his own actions matters a lot.

Well said R. May I add on to that?
'There are individuals who display great talent and ability, but because of certain personality traits, annoying habits, or refusal to function as a team, caused them to be liabilities instead of assets."
-- Zig Ziglar
I see how that holds true in the world of TFM.

among the list of "unlucky one", probably can include barani (parvai ondre podhume).i think he did a good job for that movie.

I would place KR and YSR on the same league irrespective of YSR being commercially successful.
Except Kaadhala**2 and Vaanchi, KR's music has been good. I would rate Manickam , Ullaasam and Dum**3 as his best. Even Alexander had a very melodious number from UnniKrishnan

-Shyam (mostly Mouli movies)
-Philip Gerry (Thottach Chinungi)

-SPB (Thudikkum Karangal, Agaram)
-V.S. Narasimman (1000 Pookkal Malarattum)
