Have you seen the latest Madhavan Pepsi advert? Really cool! I got to know from my friend that the original is from the Tamil movie Sakalakala Vallavan. I quickly bought the soundtrack. Wow!! The music from the song 'Naanthan Sakalakala Vallan' blew me away instantly. Hard to beleive it came out 20 years ago. I've been hearing from my Yamaha amplifier and JBL speakers incessantly. God stop me!!
Can anyone recommend me similar songs by Ilayaraja in that era?

I vividly remember the fights we used to have over the TFM vs HFM disco songs of late 70's and early 80's with our 'Delhi-mumbai-even Bangalore returned after summer hols' Tamil friends, and obviously the Money-Muscle power of HFM would win.
Let me list out some of the disco songs, I used to like :
From IR :
Sorgam madhuvile - Sattam en kaiyil
Megam kottatum and Enge en kaadhali - Enakkul oruvan
Solla solla enna perumai - Ellam inba mayam
Ennadi meenakshi - Ilamai oonjalaadugiradhu
Vaa vaa pakkam vaa - Thanga magan
Aasai nooru vagai - Thambikku enda ooru
Netru inda neram and Idhu oru nilaakaalam from Tik**3
Hey unnai thaane - Kaadhal parisu
MSV:
Engeyum eppodum- Ninaithaale inikkum
SG:
Devamrutham jeevamrutham - film Moondru mugham
TR:
Dhinam dhinam un mugham - film ???
There must be many more to add.

Anytime. There are too many albums peppered with one or two disco songs. Best method to pick out a IR album with a disco song: pick out any one you see in the stores, go through each song in the album, and you'll discover everything is damn original spanning most known genres and many unknown, typically IR. If you don't like one song now, reveist after a few years, from the maturity of listening, you'll appreciate other album songs.
anyway, my recos:
(1970-80s)
Kadhal Parisu (must have)
Raam Laksham (must have)
Moodu Pani
Kaali (Thithikkum - must must have song)
Oru Iravu Oru Paravai (Naalukku Naal)
Oru Kaidhiyin Diary (must have)
Neengal Kettavai (Naane Raaja)
Sura Kottai Singakutti (Onnum Theriyadha Pappa - superb)
Michael Madhan Kamarajan
Aduthu Vaarisu (many songs)
1990s (Better recordings)
Singaravelan
Uzhaipalli
Of course, MSV's Ninaithaale Inikkum is a milestone album
Tip of the iceberg selections for IR, he used to come out with so many disco numbers.

* Thomson - Telugu original of Dhak Dhak ...
* LG AC - Uravenum pudhiya vaanil
* Nerolac - Annathe aaduraar ...
* Pepsi - Ilamai Idho Idho
Putham Pudhu Kaalai (Alaigal Oyvathillai)
Naguva Nayana Madhura Mauna (Pallavi Any Pallavi)
TWO NEW ADS in USA MAY HAVE BEEN INSPIRED FROM IR TUNES:
** Walgreens USA ad - PAZHAYA SOGANGAL (Era Vizhi Kaaviyangal)
** SKYY BLUE drink ad Oru Kum Kuma Senga Malam (Aaradhanai)
However, i think the tunes adaptation for two of the Indian ads featured of Karthik' site is not credible at all. Tune choices for AD is poor too, IMHO.
I would think a Hindi tune like Hey Pahali Baar...etc. would make a great ad tune.

Hi All & Priya Ramesh,
Thanks for all your great replies!! Makes me want to check out those that you've recommended. I already managed to get Kaali previously but never really listened.
I'm 18. All this while have been listening to the latest tamil songs but I don't get a kick out of them as they all seem so monotonous in style and almost melody-less. Besides, I listen to tons of western music and can you tell that many(really many!) tamil songs are ripped off from what I hear in western music. But I am begining to check out Ilayaraja's music. I can't believe some of the bloody good song I am hearing are composed so long ago(before the emergence of myself). Really am amazed he produced such stylish music so long ago. The disco music in the movie Kaal(Thithikkum song) really rocks man! The way the music starts off and the way the violin blends in to the disco rhythm just rocks man! I have asked some caucasian and black friends of mine to listen and they like it so much. So much so that one of them borrowed and kept blasting this song in his Dolby 5.1(simulated) surround sound.
Gosh, seems like there are more gems need to be discovered in time to come. Again, thanks for all your recommendations. Right now, still in ecstasy listening to SK and Kaali. :-)

. 'vikram.. vikram..' - Vikram('86)
. 'idhayame.. naalum naalum' - aduthaathu albert('83?)
. 'varudhu.. varudhu..' - thoongaathe thambi thoongaathe('84)
. 'maina, maina.. maaman' - pagal nilavu('85)
. 'aasaiya kaathula thoothu vittu' - Jhonny('80). this(actually, the whole album) continues to be very popular.
Query still executing in the memory.. I'll post if anything useful come out.

Welcome to the "4000 IR songs club"! It is a damn long ride, requires several life times to appreciate TFM particularly IR's music.
Get Moodupani and you'll knock your friends out again with two of brilliant musical ideas for dance/disco songs: The breaks and preludes are are twice as faster and thrilling than "Thitthikkum".
Thittikkum has a fantastic second stanza after the interludes- SPSailaja' portion, dramatic and rare. The whole song is a unique IR style breathtaking and still unparalleled.
You r right, i am listening to IR for 28 years now!!!! still can't crack how it is possible to get a flow like in IR' songs.
Check out also Garjanai, Aduthu Varisu, Kadal Meengal (Endredrum Aanandamey) Raam Lakshman (has got two super disco numbers)
Karthik Raaja is another genius. In Hindi if you are exploring disco Bappi Lahiri is not a bad choice, for lack of Hindi choice in that genre. Second is Laxmikant Pyarelal notably Karz

The best fast song which i think is 'Appapa Thithikkum Un Mutham..Pon Mutham..' in the movie 'Japanil Kalyanaraman' by SPB. SPB would have never sung a song faster than this. That too, u must hear the tune(IR) and see how SPB modulates his voice..great!!!
It will be instant hit if its used in any new movie, even though the song is composed in 80's
