  my guess would be Latha..... cause this is not the first time another lady singer is complaining..... i think Anuradha also had complained long back about this Latha (& Asha) domination in Hindi....

  It goes show its not only you need talent but also luck and also you have to be good with politics to come out of the mess,unfortunately in Vani Jayaramji's case its very unfortunate,
  now this kind of back stabbing politics is very common in North India,even Chitra complained about this in another interview.

  I frankly havent liked Vani's Hindi songs so much, but her songs in Tamil have given me goosepimples (and to a non-Tamil that I am.)
  "Ezhu swarangalukkul" is something only she can sing.
  
  
  Can someone tell me in brief the contents of that interview. In any case, Lata and Asha were BOTH accused to troubling her. i dont know any details to refute or corroborate this statement.
  
  However one point - Vani doesnt sounds as beautiful in Hindi as she does in Tamil,Kannada,telugu or Oriya.

  Compare VJ to LM/AB if u want - they are atleast in the same league.
  
  But paying attention to Anuradha Paudwal is really worthless. AP has a horribly shaky and painful voice. Listen to her cover versions of old Hindi songs if u have any doubts.
  
  I dont know the facts about Vani's complaint - but yes definitely she is a legend and has a very powerful/strong voice. But Anuradha, huh!

  I like VJ's "megame megame " song very much and there is one more song its radha , mohan movie , she will become a singer and mohan will envy her etc there is one very catchy song in that movie .
  but even IR didnt use VJ as he made use of uma ramanan or jency, I cant understand this fact when KJY and SPB can be like king in tfm who does all south indians have problems in north, i believe they consider anumalik more than ARR

  Sats-the song was Yaaradhu sollamal nenjalli povathu-solo by VJ.
  I have read an article in the 80's where another singer-Runalaila-she sang one song in the movie-gharonda-do dewanee shehar mein-this song became popular but she had to pack her bags to bangladesh (her native) due to the probs. created by the mangeshkar sis. In that article they had mentioned about Vani's plight.Infact for the movie Guddi-vani won the tansen award for which one of lata's song was also competing but eventually vani won the award. I believe this angered lata and vani had to leave Bombay.Then after a long gap she sang all the songs-meera bhajans in the movie meera-under the md of pt.ravi shankar.She also won some award for her songs in this movie but the movie directed by Gulzar faired badly at the box office.

  I do not agree to the fact that IR had not used VJ to the extent of Uma Ramanan. IR has used her voice very effectively. So many songs to her credit: Songs in "Ilamai Unjal aadugirathu",a Punnagai mannan song (i forgot the lyrics); songs like "Naane naana yaaro thaana", "Inraiku yen intha aananthame" and even IR has managed to give her a disco hit: "vaa, vaa pakkam vaa" in "Thanga magan". VJ could not be as prolific as Lata/Asha or SJ/ Chitra, but that might be due to luck, politics... whatever..

  I think something is wrong with your ears.while Vani might not have sounded as good as a native north singer she was definitely passable in the diction part of it.
  Vani is the only singer who has a combination of a very good bass and range of voice. most of her songs are rendered with expression,emotion and melody.
  the tFM listeners are accepting atrocious pronunciations combined with lousy voices like Sadhna Sargam,Sukwinder,HH,where as LV you are talking so bad of a great 3 time national award winning singer !

  I never said anyhting bad about VJs Tamil songs - they are surely wonderful. But to praise her Hindid songs is stupid. They carry quite an accent. I also do not justify the poor Tamil pron. of Sadhana, or even LM/AB. But to bring this foolish issue of politics against vani by LM/AB is idiotic. This is because Vani suffered in the diction aspect in Hindi and all northern languages. Thats my only point.
  
  
  And I am 100% with u, if u praise Vani for Azhage Unnai..,Shankarabharanam,Aboorva Raagangal,her song in Punnagai Mannan,Ilamai,Rosappo Ravikkaikkari......

  Say anything u want against Sukhwinder and Sadhana, but NOT hh (Hariharan).
  
  Hariharan has sung great ghazals in the North. He has worked with musicians like Ashaji,Zakir Huissain,Rais Khan,Sultan Khan and Mehndi Hassan. He is a great singer.

  Guys it was vanijayaram who got state award for shankarabharanam in telugu, not SJ,
  
  She also got many awards in telugu one for "Jagadananda karaka" in Pellipustakam, and "Anatineeyara hara" for Viswanath movie. these are great songs rendered by VJ.
  
  My fav of VJ's bhajans is "Mere to giridhar gopal dusarana koyi.." Thats really great.

  Here is a translation of the interview.
  
  
  Q: With "Malligai en mannan" and with several other songs after that you took a special place in the hearts of many fans. Why dont we hear from you anymore?
  A: (laughs) No one asks me to sing any more. That is the truth. Older great MDs like MSViswanathan, KVMahadevan, Vijayabaskar, MKArjunan, and Dakshinamoorthy respected me and my voice and gave me chances to sing in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. I had a successful career. Now there are lot of new MDs who come and go. None stays.
  
  Q: What is the reason?
  A: You cannot understand the lyrics. Music is noisy. MDs and singers too are not formally trained. If they know to compose a tune they call themselves MDs. They don't have the knowledge of how, where and when to use an instrument. Nor do they have knowledge of the ragas.
  
  Q: You sound upset.
  A: Yes. After my marriage my husband took me to Bombay to learn Hindustani from Ustad Abdul Rahman. I practised 18 hours a day and specailized in Ghazals, Bhajans ans Dhumri. I sang all songs in Guddi under Vasant Desai and I won five awards for Bolere pappi. I had a very formal career path and specialized music.
  
  Q:Even though Guddi songs were popular you did not become very successful in Hindi films...
  A:Not really. I was pretty busy singing under Naushad, Madanmohan, OPNayyar, RDBurman, Kalyanji-Anandji and Lakshmikant Pyarelal and with singers like Raffi, Mukesh and Kishorekumar. Then I had some bitter experiences and I had to leave Bombay.
  
  Q:Bitter experiences?
  A:Yes, one of the famous female singers was angry about my growth. Actually I had a lot of respect and regards for her and considered her my rolemodel. People gossipped that my career was over when I vacated Bombay. But due to God's grace and hard work I got a good name in the South. I haver been to anyone asking for a chance to sing. All were chances that came to me from those who valued my talent and voice.
  
  Q:You said the present day MDs don't invite you to sing. You are criticising their music at the same time. What should we take this to mean?
  A: I am not criticising them because they are not inviting me to sing. I just lamented over the standard of music today. I can't understand it when they say that today's music has changed because the trend has changed. After a long time I sang for YSR for the movie Nandha.
  
  Q:How did you like working with YSR?
  A:YSR is talented like his father. He is active but steady, young but mature. His way of composing with the keyboard and directing the singer are very novel. He seems very dedicated and he will be successful.
  
  Q: You must have a collection of awards...
  A: I have sung more than 8000 songs so far. I won the national award three times. I have won state awards in Gujarat, Andhra, Maharashtra and Orissa. I have won KalaimAmaNi, Tansen and filmfare awards.
  
  Q:Tell us about the timeless songs of Sankarabaranam.
  A:Yes, many VIPs became my fans after listening to Dhorakuna. Also Ezhu Swarangalukkul from Apoorva Raagangal brought me a lot of appreciation. It was my formal training that helped me sing those songs well.
  
  Q:Who are those VIPs?
  A: Jyotibasu's wife is a big fan of my bengali songs. She would call me on the phone and ask me to sing and praise me. Sunil Gavaskar will listen to my songs and call me (he calls me Vaniji.. Vaniji..) to compliment. I have many fans in America too including the Nobel winner Norman Borlaug.
  
  Q: Once S.Janaki said that she has sung many film songs but never given a Carnatic concert. But you do both. How do you do that?
  A: I am singing on stage all over the world these days. I focus more on concerts and have not much time for film songs. But if someone asks I would sing for movies. Singing is my profession.
  
  Q: About Ilaiyaraja and ARR...
  A: I havent sung for ARR. I have sung many for Ilaiyaraja. IR's specialty is the way he presents his notes and his making sure that the singer sings exactly the way he wants. After the song is recorded he will polish it in his own way and make it sound soothing. I won Tamilnadu state award in 1980 for IR's song "Naane naana".
