I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

I suddenly remembered a song "Pollacchi macchaanae, poo vaangi vecchaanae". I believe it is by VJ. I don't know the name of the movie though...

Priya -
Pollachchi Machchanae is from Nirabaradhi. S-G music.
Vengayam, wasn't Vaira Nenjam in the hindi remake called "Dil Ka Heera"? (direct translation?) And I believe it was produced by Premalaya R. Venkatraman? It starred Hema and Dharmendra. The film was a far from Heera - and sank without a trace.
Saravanan -
Similar in feel and expression (to Neerada) is the song "Ammamma Asai Pogum Neram - from Kuppaththu Raja. This one WAS picturised on Padmapriya!
The VB-MSV confusion (the former's tunes mistaken for the latter's) reminds me of the RDB-Rajesh Roshan similarity in the initial days of RR's introduction (Julie). I still think that VB's music did have more of a "hindi" sensibility (Soundaryamae Varuga,Varuga, Aadu Puli Aattam, Sadhurangam, Mayangugiraal Oru Maadhu etc.) - and this might have to do with his training/early apprenticeship with Bombay MDs. Even VBs last film Neela (2000) had all these original influences intact. And of course, it had Vani Jairam!

Saravanan :
Your postings are such a pleasure to read. Pls keep them coming. But really, how do you manage to store so much of info and in such great detail? Would you by chance digress to take us thru VJ's journey in other indian languages ..telugu and hindi, particularly ?
Neel D:
You are so obliging with our requests..all i can say is Nandri.Meendum (mElum) tharuga :) . Need one clarification though..did VJ sing "Raama Naamam oru Vedhame " for Junior Rajini in Sri Raghavendrar? Most of the music web sites credit it only to KJY ..Wud someone have a link to that song ?
AV :
Thks for the links to the mallu songs..Naadanpattile is really enchanting .the classical compositions are beautifully rendered by VJ( as usual ) with such richness in "Bhaavam" that one ends up having goose flesh listening to them . I wish the tamil junta is as appreciative as the Malayalees when it comes to semi classical numbers in modern (day) films..:|
Naaz:
Thks for the info on UNS..hmm..yet another Mohan movie with such terrific songs...the success and adulation that guy enjoyed will remain one of the unsolved mysteries of the world !

Tamizh Junta is trying to prop up (in complete bad faith, if you ask me,) an atrocious album (with singers and pronunciation that takes the cake and the bakery... and all of Anna Salai with it!) called BABA. So, Anuradha, "appreciation" of "semi-classical" (in well-nuanced Tamizh) is a foregone conclusion. And wishful thinking :-)
Rama Namam is available on www.musicindiaonline.com
It is interesting to note that a significant number of songs (duets) of VJ with SPB,KJY etc always credit the male singer, and seldom mention her. Or worse, the song is credited to some other female PBSinger. The Rama Namam song is a good example of such an occurrence. So click on the KJY link. It will reveal VJ to you!
You are right. Mohan and melodies...Well, the directors had to depend on something - and we know how much they could depend on their Hero...Music to the rescue!

When I think about VJ's malayalam songs-my favourite is her duet with KJY in manjil virinja pookal-the song manjaram kmbil-she sings with so much zest and energy, a kind of a carnival song.
Did VJ sing in the mal. film gnanam?

Balaji -
I am with you, in appreciation, of that song from Manjil Virinja Pookkal. The small taan before "muththathoru pandhal ketti..." segment is class VJ.
Karuna Cheiva was in Gaanam - and I think it was the best solo in that film. VJ also had a few good songs in Raagam and Orrmagal Marikkumo.

Naaz:
I checked musicindiaonline before & after posting above..i cudnt locate it at any place..not even under KJY solos /KJY other PB singers..are u sure it is still available at MIO ? Probabaly they replaced it with BABA kind of music(k):))! While on Manjil virinja pookkal - i remember reading (a long time back) that it was made in tamil too ? Was it , really ?
Also you are very correct about credits only to Male PB singers ..worse still ,in some of the malayalam songs Sj is called VJ for some reason !!!

Naaz,
enna inimai when VJ hums "hmmm..hmmm.." in enRumE nalla Rasi.
Saravanan,
Thanks for giving the movie names for those songs and thanks for the latest installment of VJ's careerography (naaz, what is the correct word?).
Anuradha,
VJ sings a very small portion of the song "Ramanamam". KJY gets the bigger, better part of the song. I will upload it in a few days. VJ was used very little in both songs of Sri Raghavendrar :-(
G.Ragavan,
I have a noisy recording of "Sridevi varam ketkiraal". I will see what I can do with it. Give me a week or so. VJ's singing is just out of this world in that song. There is feeling and expression in every aksharam of that song. So many subtleties and nuances all through it.
"rAgam... en kaiyil en veenaiyil
gaanam.. en sollil en jaadaiyil
naanthaane paadinen om swagatham
suprabhatham nidham"
The second stanza goes to PS.
Everyone,
Did you like the "thEn" song "azaiththEn varuvAyamma"? Appadi thEnAga azaiththAl meenatchiyAl maRukkavA mudiyum. "nEram panivizum nEram" is another gem that has to be experienced in the quite of the night. All those devotionals are examples of the beauty of properly pronounced Tamil.

You are right about the Neram Panivizhum Neram song. It is a great song for a starlit night - as the opening line suggests. "Veedu Veedaga Thedi Alaindhene..., Gopiayar" the slight elongation on ya and then drop to "Konjum Ramanan Illaiye" is a sublime touch.
Ambigai Varuval Arulai Tharuval...the different ways of emphasis and lucidity in "Saradha" is another signature touch that is so unmistakably VJ.
Azhaithaen Varuvai Amma is a song that could have easily been in a "bhakti" film like say, Meenatchi Kalyanam or Madurai Arasi or something on those lines. It is sung be such sincere devotion and precision. It is a blessing of a song.
So good to hear non-film VJ tamizh songs. They give her so much more scope as a singer (although as a genre they might not have so great an audience) it serves her voice and training immensely.
Check out the drop in the Ambigai song:

Add Nenjam Unai Ninaikka to the above list. Just finished listening to it a few minutes ago. How can one possibility do justice to such peerless singing with just words? It is a spellbinding performance.
The varied enunciation of the word "Nenjam" - one can listen to the song just for the one word miracle. But the song has so many more such moments. It is also quite a challenging composition, but VJ,as usual, makes it all seem like a picnic at the beach!

Saravanan,
1.One more trivia on "Padha Pujai". Perhaps because of number sentiments, the title had a question mark in the end. "Padha Pujai?". I remember that 'Kumudam' review had a comment " Aen indhak kelvikkuri?, Padha pujaiyil sandhegama?"
2. "Vaira Nenjam" had one more folk song in which Sivaji and Padmapriya come in the guise of Telugu speaking Gypsies (for stealing some diamond necklace or some such stuff!). The song( May be TMS and one female voice) goes like this: "Adi, Kaarthiga maasamadi, Kalyaana seasonadi".
3. To my knowledge, Sridhar's own Hindi version was called "Gehri Chaal"(Deep conspiracy/trick), with Hema, Jitendra and Amitabh.
4. I saw people discussing non-filmi songs of VJ. Let them recall the revolution created by one ADMK propaganda song in terms of crowd pulling in 1977 assembly elections " Vaasalengum rettai ilai kolamidungal" by VJ-Pulamaipithan??-MSV

CV,Saravanan, RAghavan,
Our people most of them have a bad habit of knowing songs only from hit movies. There are many number of extremely melodious songs in the films that flopped. People just don't even listen to these songs. Even for the songs, I have seen, people go only after the heroes and not after the composers. Funny indeed. Namma jananga rasanai maarinathan film music uruppadum.
