Oru Paarvai writeup:
I had no idea about the landmark collaboration surrounding the "Nangooram" soundtrack. Thanks for the knowledge, Saravanan. I made the song as a V.Kumar song the very first time I heard it, so I wonder what Khemadasa contributed here (truly curious here, no offense intended as I'm sure Khemadasa has the goods). The various shifts in the sandham, each as enchanting as the next is like a complexly woven tapestry. I just marvel at the many trajectories within the first 3 minutes. I've itemized them:
1-oru paarvai...kaettu
2-humming
3-koadi vaarthaigalai...veLLam
4-humming
5-ninaikkiraen..naanamoa
6-neeyum mouna raagam...geetham
7-sonnaal...mudiyavillai
8-and back to pallavi
I've heard of pallavi and 2 charanams and the occasional anupallavi, but this is truly dazzling. What's more, it doesn't appear all that complicated in the rendition.
Kannadhaasan has poured himself generously here to elevate matters further:
paniyae adhigam aanaal adhuvae analum aagum.
Sidebar: Even in the other song, "Aalayam naayagan, gopuram naayagai" Kannadhasan achieves a little feat in the pallavi by managing an analogy without assigning it directly to the subjects but just by arranging them in a way that it implies aalayam = naayagan, gopuram = naayagi. (That it could be rearranged as "Aalayam, gopuram: naayagan, naayagi" is strictly for language freaks)
And of course there's blessed SPB who performs yet another vicarious exorcism of the soul for us. This is not just a song, it's an epiphany.

Surya, not sure about the banner of ‘Hanthane Kathawaa’, but as I had written, it was directed by Sugathapala Senarath Yapa, an acclaimed director, and a contemporary of great film makers like Tissa Liyanasuriya, Amaranath Jayatilleke, G.D.L. Perera and Titus Thotawatte. Sugathapala Senarath Yapa was a Government Servant, who directed films in his spare time! Another Sugathapala classic is ‘Pembara Madhoo’-1977.
Hanthane Kathawa was scripted by the renowned Dharmasena Pathiraaja, who later became a director in his own right with ‘Sathuro’-1970.
The contribution of Sri Lankans to Indian Tamil Cinema is something worth pondering upon. Dhavamani Devi, who hailed from Jaffna, made history when she dared and bared in the classic forest adventure Vanamohini-1941. MGR was born in Madulkelle near Kandy. Chandrababu studied in St. Joseph College, Maradana.
VC Guganathan and Balu Mahendra are Sri Lankan Tamils. Actress Sujatha grew up in Galle, where her father was a teacher. Radhika’s mother is a Sri Lankan Tamil, and Radhika grew up in Vennappuwa. Music Director L Vaidiyanathan was born in Jaffna (1942), where his father, Lakshminarayana Aiyar was a professor in the Music College.
Popular Sri Lankan Actress Malini Snehalatha Fonseka was Sivaji’s pair in Pilot Premnath- 1978. Vijaya Kumaratunga acted as the third corner in Nangooram’s love triangle. Gamini Fonseka romanced with Sripriya in Neela Kadalin Orathiley-1979. And Geetha Kumarasinghe crooned (in SJ’s voice) ‘Then ilangai mangai, vennilavin thangai’ and acted as one of Sivaji’s pairs in Sridhar’s Mohana Punnagai-1981. Ceylon Manohar has acted in a number of films and has also sung a few songs (‘Coatuppotta maapillai’- Pilot Premnath and ‘Mama manasu ippo nallale’- Manitharil Iththanai Nirangala ). Ceylon Vijayendran too acted in some films and dabbled in writing as well. Raththathin Raththame- 1981 (Stg:Jaishankar, Radhika, Nagesh) was a wholly Sri Lankan venture—its technical crew was Sri Lankan, even its director and producer were Sri Lankans. It was a huge hit in Sri Lanka, though it bombed at the Indian Box-Office.
Khemadasa composed music for Nangooram (jointly with V Kumar) and independently for the unreleased Vasanthathil Oru Vaanavil. And in the late 90s, Sri Lankan Tamil singer Nirosha sang two enchanting songs ‘Innisai mazhayinil nanaigiren’ and ‘Nee oru paarvai’ (with Unni Menon) for the unreleased film Uravukku Mariyadhai.
And of course, Radio Ceylon was the poioneer in spreading the appeal of tfm, and for many of us Thamizh Chevai Irandu remains an integral part of childhood memories. Announcers like Raja, Mayilvahanan, Abdul Hameed, Rajeswari Shanmugham and Visalakshi Hameed can never be forgotten.

- K.B.SundarambaL and S.G.Kittappa started acting together in Sri Lanka in the 1920s.
- From a Manisegaran post:
Again some narrow minded politicians again politicised the song scene in Kai Kodutha Deivam.
In that film Shivaji Ganesan is portrayed as Bharathi in a dream scene. The song is Sinthu Nathiyin Misai Nilaviniley. In this song there is a line which goes:
Singala Theevinukkore Paalam Amaippom
Sethuvai Meduruthi Veethi Samaippom
Vangathil Odi Varum Neerin Migaiyaal
Maiyathu Naadugalil Payir Seiguvom.
In this scene a model of India connecting Sri Lanka by a bridge is shown. This was twisted by some politicians as a deliberate attempt to instill in the minds of the Indians the desire to conquer Sri Lanka. The film caused a lot of agitaion in Sri Lanka. But poor Bharathi had the greater interest of the entire Tamil race as a whole.
- This by Mahendra Raj:
In 1962 when the then Ceylon (Sri Lanka) Government was treating the Tamils badly Kaviarasar led a protest rally against the former to the premises of the Ceylon Attache in Madras. When this news reached the authorities in Ceylon they imposed a blanket ban on all Kannadhasan songs over Radio Ceylon with immediate effect. But after a week it so happened that the ban was unofficially lifted and Radio Ceylon began to broadcast Kannadhasan songs. When Kaviarasar heard this he immediately straightened his shirt collar and with a smirk remarked that without his songs Radio Ceylon will go bust! It was true because that was a period where every other third song released was by Kannadhasan! Thats bragging with a touch of wit and truth!
- Manisegaran mentions that Vasantha MaaLigai ran for a record 41 weeks in SL.

I remember hearing dialog bits in ilangai oliparappu..from the movie "Oru thalai kaadhal" made in srilanka. The story revolves around a doctor, his wife, a patient, I guess. Adhu pathi edhavadhu thagaval irukka?
I think Guru (Kamal,Sridevi)ran in SL for more than a year.

raja m, sorry. noticed your query just now. I have no info on the Sri Lankan fim Kuthu Vilakku, though I remember reading that it was a very sad story with a tragic ending, based on the dowry problem.
I have heard of landmark Sri Lankan Tamil films like Thottakkaari, Ven sangu, Vaadaikaatru and the recent Sarmilavin Idhaya Ragam. 'Kannmani aadavaa' (from the film Nirmala) was often heard on Radio Ceylon.
Speaking of songs, Ceylon baila has been extensively used in tfm. 'Chinna maamiye, un chinna magal enge, pallikku sendraalo' was a joyous ditty that became immnesely popular. And of course, the appeal of 'Churangani' has transcended generations.
