Guys,
We have talked about & analyzed so many Tamil Film Music songs, lyricists, singers etc...
Is there any "FORMULA" for a song to become HIT ?
That is, for a Patho, Melody or Duppaanguththu to become a "HIT" are there any RULES that we can formulate ?
For example :
- Most of the songs set in a particular raagaa (for certain mood) are hits,
- Songs sung by the singers (or duet combination)
- songs using specific Instruments (lead/percussion)
- songs set for a specific mood/situation
etc... etc...
With the vast knowledge/data warehouse we have in newtfmpage.COM, probably we can try to find the FORMULA, which could be used by the music directors, film directors and producers ;-))

Only FORMULA i know is
(a+b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 + 2ab
:-)))

peeps what about this.
(a)*(a)= SQRT[(a)*(a) + (b)*(b)]
Perhaps the MDs should use the above pythogaras theorem to find the longest side of a right angled Triangle

Raghuvaran,
You are wrong buddy. Pythogaras theorem is
C^2 = sqrt ( A^2 + B^2 )
which school are you from ????
( I think thathuvavaathi will be regretting now for having decided to post this ;o) ... sorry buddy )

Raghuvaran,
"(a)*(a)= SQRT[(a)*(a) + (b)*(b)] "
The theorem you mentioned is more high-funda than Pythagoras.Your theorem gets limited to PT on the condition that the left side 'a' being greater than 'a' on the right side.
How about this formula?
SPB sings=hit

I think almost all songs based on "sahana" are hits...whatdya say?

"paarthen sirithen" is one of the probably, only 2 songs in sahana in tfm, the other being rukku rukku from avvai shanmughi. sahana can also be found in kannaamoochchi and in azhage sugama (pp) and in the tv serial song "indha veenaikku theriyaadhu". Going by this very small number, the success rate is 100% for sahana. appadi paaththa bhimplas raagaththula oray oru song: "poo maalaiyil" from ooty varai uravu. so 100% success in bhimplas too. sahana or bhimplas? whatdya say?

Thatuvavadhi,
I think a catch phrase & tune, and making it repeat throught the song makes it a hit... I found myself humming "thiruppadhi ezhumalai" and "salam gulamu" without even listening to the entire song.

Here is what I would do if I were a TFM MD :)
1) Write a tune with the first word/phrase repeated twice.
2) Will not use tabla/dholak etc..look for some cool rhythm loops in my library or in some POP songs, modify them a bit
2.5) Make sure the rhythm texture is fully/partly maintained even through the interludes
3) Have a chorus sing some stuff randomly.
4) Add some sound effects like fading the voice out etc..
5) Make sure I have vairamuthu or vAli are writing the lyrics..
6) Get a different voice or ask a singer to modulate their natural voice. If not equalise or use some effects on the vocal track.
7) Spend all the fees for the album completely on sound engineering hardware/software.
And grow long hair and call the reporters and humbly claim that melody is my strength (even though most of my time is spent on selecting the rhythm loops and piecing together the tracks :) and assert that my belief in god will make me a success.
(guys..this is just a joke..take it easy :) )

Which school did YOU come from?
In my school, I learnt the Pyth. Theorem as
C*C = A*A + B*B
So, much for finding faults!!

" Spend all the fees for the album completely on sound engineering hardware/software."
If I was a TFM MD(impossible),I would put the money into my pocket(don't spend it on music surely) and record the song in the worst possible way.
Now the interview,
Journalist:The songs are quite good(being polite).But there seem to be too many disturbing noises in the song.What do you say to that?
Myself:Look at it this way!If the songs are quite good(assuming he/she was mentioning as a matter of fact) with these noises just imagine how much height(better) the songs would reach if the songs were recorded properly.
The interview is over.Now comes the important question:How do I spend the money?
Buy musical equipments?No!
buy a new house?Maybe
Produce a movie?interesting idea
BTW,this is a joke.Don't take it seriously.:-)

Here is what I would do to become popular in tamil nadu.
1) Write a tune and tell it is western classical.
2) Will use tabla and dholak only to call it folk music.
2.5) Make sure the rhythm does not change any where in all the songs.
3) Have a chorus sing some stuff randomly. or use your esteemed voice inspite of it sucks to the core/
4) Add some "nice" effects using SJ
5) Make sure I fight with vairamuthu and other lyric clan and start writing my own lyrics.
6) Get a different voice and fight with every singer i come across.
7) create an album completely and tell it is just tiffen, lunch to follow soon.
8) sit and compose a symphony and do not release it but get all the awards.
And shave long hair from head and call the reporters and humbly claim other cannot do music and tell i have been ignored by the people
and assert that my belief in god will make me a success.

here is my current formula:
use singers who sound totally alien to tamil ears-better if they are from bombay or timbuctoo..
shout at top of your voice
sing as if tamil is new to you even if you know tamil
take two years to do a movie -that will have everyone waiting -whatever junk you produce the gullible will lap it up and write reviews describing in detail each tinks and tonks
i will think of more:-)

A bit more seriously :
(Reposting from a previous thread)
IR Hit= IRMusical Genius(IRMG) x [Tamil Folk (Tfl) + Carnatic(C) + Hindustani (H) + Western Classical(WC) + Classic Rock(CR) + Disco (D) + Spanish/Latin rhythms (S/Lr)] - ARCG
ARR Hit =
ARR Creative Genius(ACG) X [1/2(Tfl + C + WC + CR + H + WC + CR + D + S/Lr) + 80s pop + Electronica (Er) + Ambient (Ab) + Urban/R&B (URB) + Jazz (J) + Blues (B) + Alternative (A) + Metal (M) + World/folk (WFl)] - IRMG
ARR and IR operate on completely different canvases the only shared reference is Tfl + C + WC + CR + H + WC + CR + D + S/Lr).

someone will come along and will tell you it is I love you in brazilian or swahilese-just to keep us assured our man has his eyes firmly set on the international horizons,you know!

cosmician ..this is not about IR or ARR :) it is about a formula for a hit song !! Even though I was kidding some or all (probably not :)) of the bullet items in my list is followed by many of the TFM MDs right now !!! The formula is just like the formula for making movies (like action, date movie etc)). It is pretty standard now, I think.

Guess Who;
From which school did you learn C^2 = sqrt ( A^2 + B^2 ), huh?
let me enlighten your brain;
to find the hypotenuse of a right angle triangle, we shall use Pythagoras, tikke, we will call the longets side (hypotenuse ) C , we will call the other sides a,b, hence the equation would be;
C = SQRT[(A*A)+(B*B)]
or
C*C = [(A*A)+(B*B)]
what are your views on the quadratic equation;
C = + SQRT [(b*b)-4ac]/2a
