agni natchathiram is one great album (of all times) where each of the six songs are extremely intelligent. The top of them being `ninnukkOri'.
The first interlude of `thoongAdha vizhigaL reNdu' is one of the most analog:-) (like a flowing river) I've ever heard..brilliant is an understatement.

I love these two songs paadum paravaigal.
1. Eagantha velai inikkum inbathin vasal thirakkum
2. keeravani iravile pagalile paadavaa nee
these are dubbed songs but still great. Eagantha velai is a perfect example for a duet song, imo.
I also love the song 'thalayai kunium thamaraye' from oru odai nadhiyagirathu
plus few more:
vaa pon mayile -from poonthalir
mazhai varuvathu - rishi moolam
eatho mogam - kozhi koovuthu
ennulle ennulle - valli
and many many more...I can't possibly list them all...

rAja rasikan..one difference that could be contributing negatively to IR's songs post-VM is lyrics. Ofcourse, other lyric writers are doing a good job too. But these lyricists are in tune with IR's style, which over the years is 'serious' and 'mature'. People want some fun, and youthful stuff, not necessarily immature but romantic stuff. Look at the oliyiLe therivadhu song..this is a 'mature romantic' song. Luckily it became a hit.
Otherwise, I find IR's latest songs, still musically innovative and rich. The best charanams in recent times is what I have heard in 'manasE en manasE' in kathal jAthi. IR has written these rustic lyrics..nice meaning to them..but I guess the mainstream is ignoring these kind of stuff.

One from pudhiya varpugal. "Idhyam pogudhe".. it was fantastic rendering by Jensi Antony. IR+Jensi combo songs were all hits. The same "Idhyam pogudhe".. in Telugu "Mamthe veLLane" was sung by P.Suseela. The song is really enchanting...

same "Pudhiya vaarpugal".. thamdhana thamdhana song... man.. i wonder what a tough time they had when singing that song which is a jaw-breaker in terms Tamil words.. and that too jency being a malayali and shailaja being a telugu... seems that IR was not at all impressed with their rendition.. it was just around 40% of what he expected.. so he wanted more... but they couldnt... so IR reluctantly had that song for the final recording... but what a product..!!!

IR gave a melody for "Chinna kounder" which RVUdhayakumar loved every bit but found it hard to picturise... he couldnt do justice to that melody.. it was that much melodious... so he finally went to IR again and asked for a lesser melody which he could picturise... IR just laughed and gave him another which is a way-down lesser melody than the original... and thats "Muthu mani maalai" for you...!!!

Vj,
come on-even to me, that is a bit unbelievable. The better the melody,it is good isnt it?and what happened to the other song?
speaking of which, when chinnaveedu songs were composed,I had a chance to listen to whole set of songs before the cassette was released. My father lives in erode and bagyaraj also is from periyar district. There was a song in that movie which goes as 'sollungal nalvazhthu'this was to be the song in climax at bagyaraj's sisters' wedding. When the film came the song was not there. The tune was not that impressive. But Raja did reuse that tune in another movie-it was the song in kungumachimizh which goes as poongatre theendathe.but now,the tune was so beautiful-with a different situation, diff orchestartion,IR transformed the entire soul of the song.

Any comments on the melodious number Thenil Aadum Roja (perhaps the one of very few songs of PS_IR combo that i don't get angry with PS. Otherwise PS has killed most of IR's tunes - eg. Iravu Neram; Ore Varam, Nirandharam; Kaathodu Poovu Urasu. Even though PS voice is more suitable than SJ's the inadequacy of her pitch and steadiness comes out in the difficult tunes of IR.)
But, Theni Aadum Roja suddenly brought so many memories of my childhood in Chennai. It was like Poovizhi Vaasalil Yaaradi Vandadhu played anytime and everytime on Ungal Viruppam and othe programs. The best thing about it is all about the wide open city under the vast bright skies of Chennai, and the sweeping flora and fauna and all that... such memories. Throws one into the embrace of the open outdoors, like the Pudiya Vaanam song does and like other songs of IR: Yen Kanmani, Kada Thengayyo... I just found it on Hamaracd.com and took me to a nostalgic trip back in time. ABBA' supertrouper album also provided other tones! any of you had this feel on the song?
- From: Subbu (@ 216.251.50.73)
on: Fri May 17 00:56:53 EDT 2002
Vj... Thamthana thamthana song was ung by B. Vasantha along with Jensy. Sailaja did not sing.
Sentimetulu: You said PS killed many tunes of IR. If that is true, PS would not have been asked again and again for many songs by IR. Till Keladi Kanmani, PS sung many songs..
You know almost all the songs of IR-PS are hits. Listen to badrakali, Chittukuruvi, Saindadamma saindadu, Annai oru alayam, Nadiyai thedi vandha kadal etc.
One more thing... IR is not a MD who compromises with low quality of rendering the song. If he had felt the same with PS, he would not have asked her to sing.

I would like to point out some forgetten songs of the early 90s from IR:
1. Nadanthaal irandadi - Chembaruthi - This song was overshadowed by the more popular "paattu poove", "chembaruthi poove" songs from the movie..but this is a classic pathos song from the maestro..the song starts with a neat harmonica piece and the tune flows quite smoothly..the charanam is more impressive as compared to the Pallavi..when SPB sings "un peran naaan.." the brighas he imparts to "naan" is delightful..the tune for the line "theruvodu vaazhum anaadhai illai" is moving, especially with the way SPB sings it. You could almost feel a sense of protest in SPB's voice when he sings this line..this one is in the mould of "unnai ninechen " from aboorva sagodharaargal but maybe a trifle better tune-wise
http://www.raaga.com/channels/tamil/moviedetail.asp?mid=T0000036
2. mandhiram idhu - Aavaram poo - has anyone heard this song? A malluish sounding light classical with a lot of brighas.."saami kitta solli vechchen" and this song back-toback sound soothing in the same album..listen to the song here
http://www.raaga.com/channels/tamil/moviedetail.asp?mid=T0000417
3. prelude of yela mala kaatukulla - Naadodi thendral - yet another forgotten number of IR from the Nadodi thendral..this one is a short number, but just the prelude is scintillating..this is a must hear prelude..great flute-guitar combo piece..why did he insert it at the prelude of THIS song of all the songs? Because, after the prelude, the song starts off entirely in a different tempo..this is again a pathos by MV..I dont hear any present day MDs using the flute the way it has been used in this prelude :-(
