Olai Kudisaiyiley... [5:06]

Biju Narayanan

C Scintillating tune, traverses so bubbly through the scale! Nice rhythm accompanies it, good choice of voice, in low pitches he reminds KJ while he sounds as Hari in high pitches. He has portrayed very well. Melody dewdrops in each swaram. IR brand silence (rest) is there at the end of saranam which addes more harmony to the tune, fabulous! (IR uses this as his special instrument!J). Tune might make u close your eyes while u listening, caresses like a winter breeze!! Lyrics also ok, not that bad. Don't miss this song for any reason.

D Instead of synthesizer beat, tabla would have been a good choice to make it more perfect, particularly for this beat! Natural instuments would have made this song a classical!

Thirunelveli Seemaiyiley... [5:53]

Ilayaraja, Mano

C Catchy tune, first 2 lines will just tug ur mind. IR's voice suits exactly on the slot. Particularly the "aah" blending in between the words in pallavi tune. Good string of instruments, esp Urumi, cymbal and the flute. Listening pleasure enhanced more by good combination of two different mode of voices, Mano's high pitch voice and IR's base voice. Though the starting part of saranam looks like old tune, later part sounds more innovative! Chorus followed by the flute bit in first interlude and the thogaiyaraa in the second interlude are IR's favo decoration! Nativity sparkles in the lyrics, really a good one! Definite hit!

Kattazhagi Kattazhagi... [5:31]

Devi

C IR starts with a foot tapping beat, (Aadaatha kaalum aadum!) Tune turns so nicely in the song. Bisirillatha chorus always been IR's speciality, this song also has no exception! Voice more sounds like Bhava's! Tabla and Flute combination in the first lines of saranam is amazing!

D Lyrics are not up to the mark, most of repeated words. Somehow this song not seems to be complete, not much imaginative stuff in the second interlude. Voice could have been little different, Janaki would be my choice.

Ilayaraja, Surender, Swarnalatha, Manorama

C Typical IR's folk song, Good rhythm and nice tune too. Everyone sings 2 lines in saranam; Pallavi by chorus. This setup is good imagination.

D Words are not catchy. Kaettu kaettu aluththu pona same type song. Lyrics.... nobody writes well for IR, I don't know why!! Each song has been written by different lyricist, but not much creative in the lyrics as a whole!! Most of IR's songs are flop just because of this!

Ela Azgagamma... [5:25]

Arunmozhi, Chitra

C Another folk song, starting with a good catchy enogh tune, and has most various styles of beats, proving IR's confident over folk songs. Feather on the cap is his arrangement of three different rhythm patterns for the same beat for the first two lines of the pallavi. Awesome!! The best part is Thavil-Tabla duo in the second interlude, though its only for ten seconds, its so remarkable combo!

D It is one of the IR's already heard tunes, nothing new. If he has concentrated more on the tune as he did on the beat styles, would have been a great hit like Otha roopa, Chinna Raasavey Sitherumpu! Even the starting thogayaraa is "Hyther Ali" old! Anupallavi is the same as the pallavi lines of Yengitta Mothathey [RAJATHIRAJA]! And there is a line similar to DEVA's Porthikkittey.... line. Lyrics... Saraswathi-ye... intha ad-hoc cinema lyricists kitta irunthu IR-ii kaapaathumma! Chitra has been totally wasted. Deepavali rocket vida Adbdul Kalam thevaiya?

Saathi yennum... [2:11]

Ilayaraja

C IR's usual song, with good santham, voice matches well on the tune. Lyrics are ok, but more like a dialog or slogam. May be included for a particular situation!

D IR has derived this santham from nondi sindhu, mostly used for tamil bajanai's, Bharathiyar's most of the songs use this santham and tune. But, frankly, after the starting the tune derails slightly from the beat track! I haven't seen this IR's songs so far!

C Wow... what a song! In the prelude itself SPB draws all the attention to him. Raja Muthirai song, anybody easily could tell its a IR's song, without a second thought. Basically this is a fast rhythm based song, but sluggish and modulated rendering add beauty to it. One of the best examples for IR's pattern based song. Pallavi tuned to pass from low pitch to high pitch while saranams are coined to follow high to low rendition. Swings inside the heart, Marvelous! Through out the song, kanchira is playing the main role. Occasionally he stops to put in more melody. In the first interlude a flute bit followed by another bass flute bit, illustrates the feeling required for the song, same way violin and cello has been treated for the second interlude. IR is incomparable in the instrument choosing. And each saranam has a violin finish, competing with SPB's voice. SPB's voice and rendering is a definite plus for this song, (his voice never get aged or what? everyday gets more sweeter than before), another aspect of this song's perfection is good lyrics. IR, SPB and RVU have competed each other in this song, do u know who won? the listeners! This song gets added into IR's evergreen hits list, such as Malaiyoram Veesum Kaathu, Theertha Karai Orathiniley, Poguthey Poguthey, Paadi Parantha Kili etc.

C This song has the IR music's uniqueness, the strong portrayal of inner feelings. You can feel it in each note of it. The intro of the instruments itself prepares the listeners for a deep emotional response. The strings setup is pretty much similar to Chinnamanikkaaga [SENTHOORAM] setup, but this one has signature string bit in the prelude which leads in the interludes too. There is a keyboard flute in the second interlude sounds bit odd, but the signature bit wipes out all the differences and makes the song live. Again the support from lyrics side lighten the tune up and up. First two lines itself more simple and poetic! And I got to confess that I was fooled by the voice when I listened to it very first time, as I thought it was PS. Nice rendering like an experienced artist. Hope IR will use her more in future.

C An enthusiastic song, wildly flows into the nerves. Starts with an ordinary thogaiyara, but nicely pops up into pitches and dictate the heart beat. This is a totally different number from IR in recent times. He starts with a water splash and keeps the percussion by emulating that with hi-hat and snare drum. Conga roll is mild and enhances the harmony, but saranams have bass drum with nice tom beats. All are very hard to notice, IR blends them very well. This song also has a signature beat. Saranams have a melody travel to the high pitch, SPB does it so well. I don't think that anybody else could do better than this. SPB's voice and his mellowed rendering style are the pleasing components of this tune. Second interlude is not much impressive but it makes more sense for following the signature bit's progression. Lyrics are so good in this song, nice imaginations and nice words usage like Pattu mugathai vaanathila pathichaa natchathirangal patti mandram nadathum, Veyililey nilavonnu nadappathu niyaayam thaana, Thanga silaiyum koyilukkul nadanthaal sirpangalukkum janmam vandhu pirakkum. I never dared to turn off this song before its completion.

C Another different song from IR with rich orchestra. A fresh start promises a lot and the song proves it. UK's voice is ok, Bhava's rendering matches the quality though she sounds more childish in some places. Much stabilized tune, natural instruments have been nicely goes hand in hand with the electronic percussion instruments. Some part of the tune and style reminds late eighty's songs. Nice song to sit back and enjoy the loneliness and feel proud about IR. Lyrics also so good. The first word sounds like Gayathri, but actually its KAYATHIRI (Kaayam (Body) + Thiri) as per lyrics. But both are singing as Gayathiri. And the saranam's sentence sounds like Alanthuril(a place in Madras) ..... but its actually alanthoori (Aalam (maram) + Thoori (Oonjal) swing)), the lyrics, aalam thoori azhagu thoori aadum thevathai yaar magalo - means "Ala marathil azhagu oonjal katti thevathai pola aadum inthap pen yaaro" and the following line, mega thoori... - means "vaanathil megathai oonjalaakki aadum manmadhan nee". These lyrics are too much for an average listener. And lot more good imaginations are also there. "Pinnalukku minminiyai soodi varum azhago", "Vaanil thondrum varna jaalam yentha ovian theettiyatho" are notable.

D IR's voice doesn't match this song at all. And he didn't the song properly too. After listening the SPB's number, its so depressing to listen his version. I think it he should have sung as a trial track then it might have been included in the album. "Kanney maniye varunthaathey", "poopalam neethanamma" - pisuru thattugirathu, Raja!.

Mano, Chitra

C Typical eighties song. An average tune, but has something to attract to it, so sticky. May be the flow which makes it appealing. Chitra does her job well as usual.

D Hyther Kaalathu synthesizer interludes. Violin bit in the second interlude would have been so nice if it was from the real instrument. Mano's low pitch not good rendering is below the average, "Nilavillaamal vaana, Neeyillaamal naana" sounds "literally" shouting! Lyrics too not so catchy, mostly used/repeated words. Would have been a hit, if it had reached a decade before.

C Lovely tune, amazing flute bit start is the end of any good part of this number.

D Then the two experts called SPB and RVU kills IR's nice no. SPB using out of the scale modulations results in the loss of melody and misses the HAT-TRICK. RVU tries to write like PB and fails miserably. "Something-bowling-missing", "combination-confusion-tension". And chorus, dialog vera.. (thaanga mudiyalaida saami!). But Im sure if this combo SPB-RVU works on this same tune for a different theme, it will be a hit, trust me!
