Being an MD is not easy...u haev teh responsibility to make every listeners to understand the movie....in fact it is harder than acting...

besides that, you must wokr hard day and nite...so look for tunes, beats, rhythm....and to channel those idea into music...is not easy....

one good MD...would think of his responsibilities before composing....and those are the hit musics.....

(i am talkign as though i'm a MD..he hehe...oru MD (MiniDisc) kude ille..aana..bantha..peresa..irukunumne, valampatti periyevange sollirikange...)

Since I started the topic, I might as well be the first to post my thoughts. But it's too late for that. :-)

So then, if I were a MD, I would: 1) first and foremost, experiment with rare raagams, such as Vanthanathaarini, Rasikapriya, Rathnaganthi, Vanaspathi and so forth; 2) use traditional Indian instruments, traditional western instruments, and instrtuments from other cultures too.

Really, I'm serious about it. I want to become a MD in the future, the very reason I started this thread. :-)

Work towards better the BGM arena and work towards eliminating 10 songs in films :) i.e. Make sure that people judge music with a composers talent in BGM than in composing hip-hope useless songs.

PS: I already am a composer not for films though ;o)

Shweta, haven't u heard of 'Thirupaarkadalil' from film Swami Iyappan although the original is from Malayalam film?Music is Devarajan???
One of the charanams 'Oru puram paarthaal ' from Athisaya raagam is also tuned to Bhairavi. But sadly, this great gana raagam has been ignored by IR. God alone knows why.

If I were an MD, the wannabe singers would've to undergo rigorous test.
1. For voice range test :
a. For reaching higher notes : Opening humming of 'paadavaa un paadalai'
and 'Devan koil deepam onru' from Naanpaadumpaadal
b. Fow lower range comfort, I would ask them to sing 'Yendan kaanil ezhulagangal' pallavi from Guru(Tamil)
2. For sancharam (sustenance)in the higher octaves, it is 'Yen kalyaana vaibogham' from AUA
3. Gamakam test :
- 'Isai arasi' from thaai mookambigai
- opening humming of 'Ponvaanam panneer thoovudhu inneram ' from Inru nee naalai naan
4. For note sense :
a. 'Vizhiyile mani vizhil mouna mozhi' from nooraavathu naal
b. 'Pattu poo poo' from Veera
5. For Tamil test :
'Ival oruthi Idal poruthi
Yezhuda vendum pudiya vidhi' from Ilayanadhi in 'manasellam'
6. Last but not the least , for improvisation : I will ask them to compose the song itself.
And Lo!!! I will get a hit song like 'Kannodu kaanbadellam' No. Iam not joking. Haven't u read Nithyashree's interview in Kalki , (way back 97 or 98 )where she said she was asked to sing the kalpana swaras, neravals etc in abheri raagam for about 15 min and all that the MD had to do was cut/copy/paste??
