Simple arithmatic:
IR scored more movies/year and hence more songs. Assuming 80% of songs are good for each MD, that beats ARR by 30 times

Hey STS,
IR had taken many experiments in the first 10 years and next years also.
If we tak varieties of music, like western, folk, karnatic, disco then IR definitely beats ARR

i think if we bring an objective person to while its easy to find out junk songs of ARR because we know he has done only abt 75-80 albums
its tugh to say abt IR bcoz it seems he is close to 800.
lets calculate... IR has been for abt 25-28 years
ARR 9 years...
simple calculation(meaning non-cmomplicated averaging) gives IR 32 albums a years so 320 albums in 10 years
so 40 % of 320 is 128
lets say ARR does 80 by august 15, 2002 (bcoz roja was released in aug 15,1992)
then I wud put 60 hits against ARR
which gives IR 2wice that of ARR.
Although i can easily come up with the 60 of ARR.I wud have to trust a IR HCF to come up with that 128.

Bharathi.,
Do you really think ARR can do 80 by August 15, 2002 - which is just 13 months from now ?
Alaipayuthay is his 50th movie, After that a couple of Hindhi movies (1, 2 ka 4 and Lagaan) came, In tamil Thenali and Star., Naayak is going to come ... so that makes it 55., So in the next one year, you think he will do 25 more movies ?

bharath,
kudos to your calculation about IR. Indeed, your calculation comes very close to the actuals.
i just counted the no. of movies done by IR from 76-85(9 years only). He has done 317 movies. In that 123 movies are hit. In this calculation I did not consider other language movies, except saagara sangamam(Telegu - Original of salangai oli). I am sure that this movie(songs) were hit. Others I did not know. So I omitted them.
I give the break up as follows:
1976-85
-------
---------------
Yr ->hit/total
---------------
76 -> 2/04
77 -> 6/13
78 -> 14/25
79 -> 14/30
80 -> 11/32
81 -> 13/33
82 -> 14/32
83 -> 14/43
84 -> 15/54
85 -> 20/51
-------
123/317
-------
What I did:
-----------
I visited Raajagahm site. Just counted the movies. Opened each movie details to see the songs. If I found say 70% or above of total songs in that movie is good(ie. well known by people; liked by me) then I assumed that that movie is a hit. Baring few obvious films I almost opened all the films. Some films were having 3 or 4 songs and if 2 songs were good then I included it. Some films were more songs in that 1 might be super hit and/or very good but i did NOT include that movie in hit list.
Some movies i just overlooked by seeing its name (e-g) Anbin mugavari, amudha gaanam, ambae odi vaa, ezhudhadha sattangaL, janvari onnu etc etc. I just overlooked(omitted) such kind of movies(i just trusted my rememberance...nothing actual (or) scientific in it).
A sizeable number of movies were not having songs and were having very good BGM that helped those movie very well but i did NOT include those movies, (e-g) Accident(kannada) it was a superb movie(how a minister's son who in intoxication will run-over group of road-side sleeping persons, is traced and caught. it is a superb thriller. correct me if im wrong about the movie).
As far as IRs music hit films, the trend of HIT decided by cassette sales were started after(or atleast the far end of) his first 10 years of career. So the *hit*, i decided, is based on the popularity and people knowing about these songs well.
As far as ARR is concerned, in 9 years he scored 55 movies. I would say 50 are hit(though i would still discount 10 more but it is my liking not the actual. hence i did not do that).
Hence in 9 years:
-----------------
IR scored 120/317 movies and ARR scored 50/55 movies.
It means (IR hit nos) ~= 2.5 * (ARR hit nos)
It means (IR movies) ~= 3.0 * (ARR movies)
I infer that the HIT:TOTAL ratio for IR and ARR is ALMOST EQUAL. Isn't it amazing???
Note:
------
1) This detail is not about quality, nuance etc of hit movies, it is just hit movies that is all.
2) For a MD, I did not differentiated between a Hit, SuperHit and MegaHit. I just considered all.
Tailpiece:
----------
As eden pointed out this thread is not about hit FILMS it is about hit SONGS. But i realised this only after he mentioned this and by that time i was more than half done. So i posted this. I request you all to bear with me.
I extrapolate my findings to SONGS HIT also. I feel almost same kind of result will prevail. But i think the "no. of hit per movie" ratio will be higher for ARR and lesser for IR but it will not be drastical.
Thanks for reading this lenghty posting.

sorry there is a blunder...
3*55 <> 300. Sorry for this. So please forget about "my inference" under the head "hence in 9 years".

Just to extend Kupps (Only to make ARR fans happy)
First 10 years:
Total films:
IR - 320
ARR - 55
Hits:
IR - 123 (Forget about films like Nizhalkal and Ninaivellaam Nitya. Just assume that if a film is not a hit, the songs are bad.)
ARR - 50 (Really?)
Out of this for how many films VM was the lyricist:
IR - 100
ARR - 45
IR was paid atleast 5 times lesser than what ARR is getting paid. Hence divide IR films with 5.
IR - 20
ARR - 45
Assume 5 songs for each film.
IR - 100 songs
ARR - 180 songs
Songs picturised good:
IR - 20
ARR - 175
Modern songs:
IR - 10 (50% folk which is a disqualification)
ARR - 170
ARR fans listen:
IR - 0 songs
ARR - 275 (All songs of ARR which is 5 * 55 films)
WOW. ARR beats IR, by infinite times.
-------------------
The fact is ARR yesterday/today/tomorrow CAN'T match IR in quantity/quality

STS,
It will really help if you sit down with a ARR fan and find out what he/she really thinks.I don't think any ARR fans think in this retarded manner.
But,I appreciate your intention to try to make ARR fans happy.Ungalukku periya manasu!!!

Trend,
Nothing personal. I don't want to copy paste what
one fans think about others. Every thread is
about IR Vs ARR. Don't pretend as if it is done
by one group. It is simply not fair.
1) What is good songs to do with hit films? Are
we saying that Nizhalkal, Kaathal Oviyam,
Ninaivellaam Nithya, Vaalibame Vaa, Ennuir Thozhan etc etc., had bad songs.
2) How come a good song is measured by popularity
or once remembrance?
3) The above calculation said IR gives
3 times more, but the final verdict gives
TOTAL ratio for IR and ARR is ALMOST EQUAL.
Isn't it amazing???
Hit Songs = Films * (AvgSongs/Film) * (%Hit) * (1-%Recycled)
IMHO,
For IR: Hit Songs = 320 * 5 * 0.8 * 0.95 = 1216
For ARR: Hit Songs = 55 * 5 * 0.8 * 0.80 = 176
This gives me that IR gave GOOD songs 7 times more than ARR.

STS - really no point in doing what ever math.... we know and in fact everyone out there knows.... enna, for some of us IR pidikkum, for some ARR pidikkum..... really no point in comparing.... enna, whenever we see some *wrong* and junk comparison, nammakku BP erikkudhu - so we loose our control and blast.... ennavoo poongaa.... vara varaa rombaa bore adikudhu.....
Trend, listen to a ARR fannu solli irukeengaa... from what i have seen u doing, its always u try to do a "vanja pugazhchifying" only - especially when it comes to IR..... so don't say that STS is saying in a *retarded* way....
Pozhudhu Pogadhavaan - yes, "Anbae odi vaa" had really good songs.... i don't remember in which Radio i kept hearing songs from this film continuously...... was it Ceylon Radio or the Trichy, Madurai channels ? and do u remember the other film which start with "A" which came along with that....
