I'm an ardent fan of S.Janaki and I consider her to be most talented female singer ever...but of late age has caught up with her divine was and I feel that if she continues to sing then people will start forgetting the great renditions she has rendered and curse her like they do for Kapil dev T.M.Sounderrajan etc....

YES - LM,AB,PS,SJ had better call it quits. PS and LM could have done so even 10 years ago.

avr, I take u'r posting as a joke. :-))
ram, SJ need not stop singing when she is getting good chances. She is not given with any kind of songs nowadays. The songs only SJ can sing (mostly) are given to her (unlike LM. I couldn't sit inside the picture hall whenever the Kabhi Kushi song started. I really donno how still MDs choose her. I think she is senior to SJ and PS). Singers like PS and SJ can sing all kind of songs. But that won't be good because the kind of songs those can be sung only by them are very very less. They had proved their talents already. At the same time whenever they get chance, they can sing.

G. Raghavan , Lata is indeed senior to PS and SJ , by a good 10 years atleast.
IMO, PS and Lata should have stopped singing in '79 and Asha and SJ by '89. A few grace years can be given to SJ, maybe 5 years atmost.

G RAGAVAN:
No that was no joke. I have grown up listening to the songs of LM,AB and I was introuduced to SI MUSIC. I love PS,SJ,VJ a lot. But one has to be objective ...PS sounded very tired in pellipustakam (telugu) or in the duet "saagara sangamame" with SPB (telugu). VJs version was far better, but SPB took the cake in that. I have heard PSs recent songs for ARR. I read a review that "she sounds just as good as 50 years ago". I find this statement to be more sarcastic than literally meant :-)
PS and LM could have stopped a long time back, say around 1989 and AB,SJ around 5 years ago.
LM is 72 years old, PS is 67,SJ is 63 or 64, Asha is 68, VJ is 56.
LM started singing MUUUUUUUUUUUCHHH before PS, almost 10-12 years before. In fact LM is the only singer who was already in the film industry at the age of 12, as a well established and regular singer in regional films before she switched to Hindi almost 6-7 years later. I agree with u that KKKG is unbearable. MDs choose LM,PS today because they ARE LM,PS -- the reasons being more emotional than musical.

Generally, the voices of female singers tire much faster...probably due to biological factors....after the age of 50 or so.
Male singers also have to suffer from the effects of bad age,but the ill-effects seem much less. For instanc, KJY sounded pretty good in "His Highness Abdullah" and "aaram thamburan" and "GURU" (Malayalam). SPB still sounds pretty good.
Of course, classical singers take the cake when it comes to aging gracefully.

Hey None,
there is a limit beyond which one shud be more realistic rather than fanatic....one can obviously find out the difference in her great voic in the past and the shrilling voice now....I do agree that she hasn't gone bad as much as Lata Mangeshkar but I'm afraid if she doesn't retire now she mite also reach such lows in her career....I want her to retire not b'cos of contempt but b'cos of great luv for her voice....I'll not be able to believe if Janaki could sing a horrible song in the future

I think she should retire in style. She had a golden age then,it is not going to work out the same way again as we can smell her age in her voice. So she should walk out gracefully from singing love songs in movies. She can indeed consentrate on religious songs/carnatic songs in accordance with her age.

Going out when you are at the top of your profession, calibre, status - is the best Swan Song. (I Too bad, Lata Mangeshkar didn't get it. Let's hope S.Janaki does.
PS: AVR - I have a bit of a problem with the biology as destiny argument. In Western music/operatic traditions women have been in top form into their 70s - Cesaria Evora - comes instantly to mind. It is perhaps the scales to which some songs are composed which makes breath-control impossible after a certain age - for both men and women. Lata can still be pleasing in a Door Kahin Ik Aam Ki Bagiya (Zubeidaa - ARR - compare this to Humko Hamise Churalo - and you'll get my drift) - but she can't do a Rasik Balmaa today. Same for SJ - She can't go back to the Singaravelane Vela days. She can be good at lower octave numbers. But I think it is upto the artist, when they choose to retire. Keep and image of the Glory Days and gracefully make way for others or chase the money forever. That's the crux.

Naaz,
well said.....If it is money Janaki is running after then nothing can syop her from repeating another TMS.....If she retires now the very thought of SJ will bring back only excellent renditions she has made....

I feel the "voice-aging" is also due to "vehement use" besides other factors ie the "wear and tear" philosophy holds good here also. What do you think.

guys just listen the telugu version of September maasam(alai paayuthe)
Still SJanaki has excellent voice
Please guys listen that song
then you will never ask her to retire
She is GREAT

Madhu,
No doubt that her voice still has greatness but honestly it when compared to what it used to be in the past it has worsened quite a bit...Itz always nice to retire when u are at the highest level much before u have areal bad day....
she has proved her greatness and that is enough retain her name as an everlasting one...
also there are quite a few young talented singers around so she should leave way to them gracefully

As long as she gets `chance' to sing, why should she stop? To me `nenjinilE' is one of the best from ARR & it's by SJ! I liked `mudhalvanE' too, though it's a typical ARR song:-)

SJ & PS are still good. I think we put their age and physical appearence in front of us when we hear their songs and that is the reason we may be biased.
TMS last few songs like 'En kadhai mudiyum neramidhu', 'annakili unna thedudhe' are also good . If he sounds diferent it is because the MD's and the directors wanted it like that . If u hear 'Avalukkum thamizh yendru per', which came many many years ago he is very similar to those songs..Sometimes the MD's ask them to over-do a song (like the so called overacting of sivaji), but that is just yet another way these talented singers can sing a song.
I think TMS, PS, SJ are so gifted that they can all sing songs all their life !!

Nobody can stop SJ from singing as long as she is alive. Only she can. (And that depends on how she wants her legacy to be remembered after she is gone.)

S.Janaki singing for "college" girl characters - portrayed by Reema Sen or some fresh newcomer of today's films is like having Jaishankar or Sivakumar still play a "college" boy in today's films. Only Jaishankar will watch. Only S.Janaki will listen.
Both things are not in our control, however.
