Songs that have the same ending "Osai" in all
(or most of) the lines are usually very
pleasing to hear because of the rhythmic
symmetry that is created. The lyricist is
a very key person in the making of such
songs. In the era of Kannadhasan a number of
such songs have come. Examples:
Osai: kaai
aththikkaai kaai kaai (Bale Pandiya)
Osai: thEn
paarththEn siriththEn (Veera Abimanyu)
Osi: En
kanavu kaNdEn naan kanavu kaNdEn (Sivagangai
Seemai)
Osai: no
kaadhal kadai solvEnO, katti sugam koLvEnO
(Unakkaaga Naan)
Osai: lai
malligai mullai, ponmozi kiLLai (Annan Oru Koyil)
Osi: (mE (aadu kaththuvadhu pOl))
anbu nadamaadum kalaik koodamE, aasai ezhil
mEgamE (Avandhaan Manidhan)
Can we make a list of such songs? Are there
(m)any such in recent times?

There is a song, sung by PB Sreenivas.Lyrics starts like 'Yanntha uoor yannravane, vantha uoorai sollava,'Antha uoor neyumkooda, arintha uoor allava'.Very nice lyrics by Kannadasan.I remember they had this kavithai for B.sc tamil in Madurai university.if some one know this song fully, request them to put it in this page.

Kalyana Then Nila from Mounam Sammadham. I think this song was modelled after Naan nila nila alla.
Should we include 'Athikkaai kaai kaai aalangai vennilave' (Bale pandiya)?

"Kodi Asainthadhum" is already listed.

Re: Definition
Most songs listed qualify nicely into the list
that I wanted; so I guess we are on the right
track. To clarify again, what I am looking
for is that the same osai should be present
in all (or, almost all) lines of the song, not
just in the pallavi. For example, I will not
include "mayakkamaa kalakkamaa" in the list
since the osai "maa" repeats nicely only in
the pallavi; similarly, "aval parandhu ponaale"
goes out of the list.
To: Kanchana
The song from Poojaikku Vandha Malar starts
as "maiyendhum vizhiyaada malarendhum kuzhalaada".
See PPP for the lyrics as well as a story
about the song:
http://www.iti.gov.sg/staff/kanagasa/tfm/ppp/kann6.html
Another song for our list:
Osai: "ttam"
thErOttam, aanandha senbagha poovaattam
(Nool Veli)
- From: Aravind (@ 202.42.152.8)
on: Mon Jul 28 01:36:51 EDT 1997
How about 'vaazhavaikkum kaadhalukku jE'
- From: Sathiya Keerthi (@ liberty.nus.edu.sg)
on: Mon Jul 28 04:57:01 EDT 1997
To: Kanchana
On checking more closely, I see that in
"maiyendhum vizhiyaada", "aada" repeats
only in the pallavi; so it doesn't come
into our list.
Some more:
1. kettadhum koduppavane krishna krishna
(Osai: krishna)
2. ah ha hO kai kai malar kai
ammammo kai mel kai vai
(Osai: ai)
3. kaalaiyum neeyE maalaiyum neeyE
(Osai: yE)
4. naan yaar naan yaar naan yaar
naalum therindhavar yaar yaar
(Osai: yaar)
5. avalukkum thamizhendru pEr
(Osai: rr)
6. enna ninaiththu ennai azhaiththaayO
(Osai: yO)
Obviously, from the list we have generated
thus far, it seems "repeating an Osai throughout
a song" was mainly a Kannadhasan speciality.

I dare to be different!
Have you forgotten IR's
Inthe maan unthen sonthe maan? There is one part of the song that is my favourite: Yennerthaan unnai yennithaan inthe kanni thaan. IR continues mogamthaan ..." Fantastic!!
How about Theirottam ananthe shenbaga poovaatam... by SP Bala.
How come everyone has forgotten Paal, thamil paal yennum ninaipaal....
The of course there is Chinna chinna aasai...
Does Theney then paandi meeney qualify?
How about Pooviley siranthe poo enna poo?

on: Mon Jul 28 09:38:31 EDT 1997
Another song:
"valarndha kalai marandhu vittaal keladaa kanna" from Kathirundha Kanngal repeats "Kanna" throughout.
Would it be double counting to include "Thamizhukkum amudhenru paer" by PS? You already have "avalukkum thamizhenru paer" by TMS, both from Panchavarnakili.
"Mullai malar maelae moikkum vandu polae" from Uthama Puthiran seems to have the "ae" sound throughout.

How about "Kannukku mai azhagu" from Pudhiya Mugam? - Here "azhagu" is used in all the lines.

Neeyethan enakku manavaati - Kudiyirndha koyil.
This song has a different osai - in Pallavi and saranams.

The song
"Parakkum pandhu parakkum adhu
parandhodi varumbodhu
Sirrikum azhagu sirikkum adhu
Sirithodi varum madhu" -
Has two osais "um" and "dhu"

NO-vaaga maariya NammaOoru:
"Indha maan undhan sondha maan" certainly is a
beautiful song that fits into our list. Who
wrote the lyrics? Gangai Amaran?
PG:
If you include different Osais in Pallavi
and Charanams then too many songs (in fact
a very large percentage of Kannadhasan songs)
will enter into our list; so let's leave
them out. In "Parakkum pandhu parakkum",
the sound "mm" repeats in almost all lines
and so it's OK.
Kanchana:
The osai, "rr" repeats in almost all the lines of
"Avalukkum Thamizhendru Per", but not in
"Thamizhukkum Amudhendru Per"; that's why I
didn't include it.
Yesterday I heard this song from Uththaman in
Malaysian Radio: "Dhevan vandhaandi, oru
dheepam koNdaadi"; the Osai, "di" repeats
throughout.

Ravi:
Indha paattai naan querry aarambichchappave list
pannittEnE? "No" runs very beautifully (mixing
Thamizh "no"s with English "No" and "Know")
throughout the song. The song is from "Unakkaaga
Naan" & sung by SPB and VJ. Can you imagine who sing
this duet in the movie? It is Shivaji & Lakshmi!!!

"Thoodhu solla oru thoazhi illai ena" from Pachai Vilakku ends with "Thozhi" or "Thalaivi" in each line.
"Agaaya pandhalilae" ends with "aa" in each line, depending on how you define a line.
"sandhanathil nalla vaasam eduthu" ends with a "U" sound in each line, if you make each line long. (example: "mamavin ponnukku aagaaya megangal selai katti parkudhu aasayodu" has to be counted as one line, and the next line is "naan paarka koodaadha pollaadha vaanathil maman magal pogudhu naanathoadu")
