Raja has to break out of his old golden shell and reach for the saphhire of the new skies. I am having this prayer after I heard Minsara Kanavu and Iruvar of ARR. This is the level I wanted ARR to reach before I could bear to listen to his songs. While it has taken him 5 years, he has done it finally.
Indian film music has just been turned on its head by ARR with songs in those two films. Radically different styles, compositions patterns and presentation. There is intellectual depth and maturity in those songs.
Raja is the final word as far as the last style of Indian film music is concerned. As Naushad claimed, Raja achieved 100 times more than anyone else in the field. True, but there is something he ignored. The new class of audience, the upmarket kids with those amazing purchasing power, who are demanding things radically different from what the older generation enjoyed. Anything and everything from relationships to sex to their own business.
To be accepted by this audience, Raja has to do exactly what he did 20 years back. How he brought in a better way of composing the same type of songs than that MSV did, now he has to accept the challenge of ARR who represents the taste of the satellite generation.
In short, Raja has to give lesser emphasis on interludes, bring longer melodies like Ooh La la la and other songs of MK and the jazz style of Iruvar. Let me tell, just as I am always fasinated by great songs of Raja, SalilDA, MSV, MKArjunan, RJain, RDB, I am beginning to appreciate ARR finally. Since, he has reached that level now.
So, Respected IR please do a 360 degree turnaround and challenge the new line composers. I know IR is continually evolving as the days go by. The only request is forget symphony as it is outdated form of music, now is the time for Jazz and much slower music. Let us request Raja to leave the fast songs behind for slower romantic number, and more rhythmic dance numbers. This situation applies to Karthik Raja too.
CHANGE PACE, GREATER VARIETY IN PRESENTATION STYLES AND STRUCTURE, NOT IN MELODIES, I WOULD CONCLUDE.

nithin,
i do not think the songs of MK are so great that
IR should follow that style.if u have heard yaathramozhi and have heard the song 'ponveyilil' by srikumar.chitra u would never listen to any songs from iruvar again.rahman's songs lack lasting power.listen, enjoy and forget type songs.for songs to last forever they should have a classical base and they should strongly
have that 'mann vaasanai' so that whenever people hear those songs it would evoke nostalgic feelings in them.both ARR and KR's songs sound like dubbed versions of present day MTV music.
i felt that ARR was much better in less popular films like 'vandicholai chinnaraasu' and 'uzhavan',with songs like 'sugam sugam' by VJ and 'raakozhi' by KJY and another solo song by SPB from the respective films.surprisingly he has not even maintained those standards recently and especially 'rakshagan' is a horrible mess.
in those days national awards used to be given to such great albums like 'shankarabharanam' and 'saagara sangamam' ,but now it has come down to the standards of MK which is very disappointing.
IR's style has been received with appreciation
with the music of his films like KM and KM doing
well.let IR follow his own style which has always been appreciated by his fans and let him continue to give those slow haunting numbers like in yaathramozhi and guru.

Dear Vijay,
Appadi podunga, chinnada sonnalum, kachidama sonnenga,
Dear Nitin,
intersting topic , but I strongly dis agree that IR has to change radically, perhaps a lot of different threads in TMF DF related Ir would explain that , I mean IR's contribution to TMF is undoubtedly stupendous it is not that he has not given tunes similar to the ones given by ARR or many other new comers, who are using lot of instruments and come out with foot tapping rhythms mixing a lot of western techno pop, disco and Jazz kind of stuff but where is the genuineness of lot of these new comers and even ARR many a times, You will be surprised couple of weeks ago I was listening to the New Yorks 101.9 Jazz FM station what a surprise "Idu sugam sugam" of VCCR's rhythm music is a straight lift from the Jazz song which I was listening, When I first listened to this song when the movie was released couple of years ago me and my brother used to listen to this song and discussed a lot especially because of Vani's come back,( one of the nice singers unfortunately not listed in the Hall of Fame thread), but as written by Mr. Vijay we really enjoy with great deal many of the ARR songs but some how it dies soon , it really never gives you life when you hear with in even 6 months ,,but also many a times at the initial listening many of the ARR songs have not been really catchy with few exceptions of course (many of Which invariably have some Cut Copy Paste samacharam). Nitin, in your openion you feel ARR took 5 years FINALLY to come out with the so called GRE......AT "Minsara Kanavu" and Iruvar , I am sure in many others openion it did not take even one year for him to churn out reasonably good songs, in my personal openion undoubtedly he came out with a big bang with "Roja" and every movie he was showing some difference but what happened to Roja songs , some how I don't get the nostalgia , puthaunarvu , life when I listen to them , but listen to "Putham puthu kaalai" of Alaigal oyvadillai or Sendoora poove of 16 vayadinile , these are just 2 examples. I feel like listening to the most recent one of ARR than his "Thiruda Thiruda" , Pudiya mugam, may be in one year Minsara kanavu would have become a Kanavu again with Taj Mahal, Engineer songs taking over the place, one more thing is ARR is yet to show his versataility like in different aspects of the music he is yet to give us an out and out pure classical songs based movie ,or "TRUE" folk type songs or give an impressive BGM so far , his BGM is even way behind many of the unnoticed but talented MDs from various languages like, Sarang Dev , Vanraj Bhatia, jai dev and even Jatin Lalit(from Hindi), L Vaidyanathan C Ashwath from Kannada.Hamsaleka has tried giving some good BGM too I hope I am not deviating from the main topic, but the truth is that IR doesn't have to adapt some sort of cheap gimmicks just to market himself. I am an ardent Fan of IR but at the same time I have developed great liking to ARR's music also right from the beginning, but to become an ardent fan of ARR for me it might take several 100 years , ( I will not be alive so long so is ARR's music , but IR's Music is immortal , LONG LIVE IR"S MUSIC). By the way Screen magazine's article about KM movie and music is total absurd.

Corrections for my previous postings,
1 Threads in TFMDF related Ir - To be read as TFMDF related to IR
2. What happened to "ROJA" songs - To be read as What happened to "Roja" songs now.
One more thing about National Awards(NA) given to ARR on both the times did not really justify the worthiness , If the standards adapted to give the NA during these two occasions were to be applied to many years back I am sure many TMF fans ( Not necessarily Hard core IR Fans) will come out with a long list of IR's movies which could have got the awards several more times. If hit songs are the only criteria to get a NA almost every BR-IR combination, MR-IR combo,Balu Mahendra -IR combo and several others MIC Mohan /Kovai Brother / IR combos had lot of great songs. I was surprised especially at the award given for "Roja" just because the songs were big hit and because MR had shown some Patriotism, definitely Roja had some very refreshing tunes , but what about "Quyamat se QUyamat Tak " of the greatest Copy Cats of INdian Film Industry Anand Milind , the songs were great hits and many critics also felt the songs were very refreshing, what about the first movie of Nadeem ( Innum ethane naalu ivaru talai marava irupparo?) Shravan By Mahesh Bhat. What about "Jo jeetha wohi Sikander" by Jatin Lalit, great songs, little different also.,,I mean there are several such examples every year , but my understanding is that if there are no suitable /stiff competition for that year the awards are given to the best creative MDs , during the year when Roja was released IR had scored two all time master pieces "Devar Magan " and "Nadodi Thenral", I bet ARR can NEVER give a movie comparable to any of these two movies , in fact me and my brothers every year sort of predict the NAs before April or May when they are anounced , I predicted 5 awards to Devar Magan , it did get 5 awards except that my prediction of best MD was replaced by N pandurangan for best sound recording for that movie.
Innoru kosuru,
"Chandra lekha" from Thiruda Thiruda vum thirydiyadu daan of course not entirely , a russian ballet kind of music I listened ti it twise, both the times in one of the figure skating games as the BGM, with no offence , I do appreciate ARR 's talents a lot but why don't he try to be more original and avoid using "Kazhudai kuralgal" , if he takes the rasigar for granted by virtue of the heavy rains in his forest we may miss a talented musician.

Folks, it is time Raja did it. The audience has changed. You know there is nothing in music Raja cannot do. He has got the information of the new audiences, all he has to do is EVOLVE and meet the competition, tune for tune, note for note and not stop experimenting, which he did unfortunately 10 years back and stuck totally with his old innovations.
RAJA PLEASE DO IT. CHANGE YOUR IDIOM AND YOU WILL FIND WHAT MADE YOU UNSUCCESSFUL IN HINDI FILMS AND IN THE INTERNATIONAL POPULAR MUSIC MARKET.
FOLK IS NOT JAZZ. SYMPHONY IS NOT JAZZ. SYMPHONIES ARE BORING. JAZZ HAS GOT THE GLAMOR AND TODAY'S AUDIENCES ARE WANTING TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH ANYTHING GLAMOROUS. TIME FOR FOLK WILL COME BACK BUT NOT SOON ENOUGH.
SO DEAR RAGADEVAN, WHY NOT YOU DO IT FOR US?
