Ilaiyaraja before and after 1987.

I have this feeling that there was a marked change (drop ?) in Ilaiyaraja's music sometime in early 1987. And it has not attained that magic ever since. Comments ...

  Ilayaraja is the Music Director of the century, for he has adroitly mixed Western classic notes with Carnatic music. His knowledge of carnatic and hindustani music is astounding. Some ragas like pushpalathika, hemabushani,rukmambari, gamanasrama etc(the list is very big) has been used only by Ilayaraja. There is so much in store
  and he has still very best tunes which he has not rendered definitely going by present trend. If he had been in Holly wood all the awards will be taken only by him.

  Hi Friends, though lot of individual songs are given by Maestro, unfortunately, very few full cassette songs hits given by Isai gnani. Some of the full album hits in the recent past i remember 1. Azhagi 2. Kaasi 3. Friends 4. Bharati.. But during 80s my god, most of the album are super hits. Many times, I was feeling how the musicians would have thrilled to hear so many tunes and be fortunate to play it.. Still, invariably each album contains one to two wonderful songs which prove Raga Devan is super MD,but he need to get full album success to get back his No.1 Status.

  well some of the - points of Illayaraja ....
  
  1.His song "Illaya Nila" (mohan Hits) is a Full copy from Kishore Kumar's song ..It was one of my Favourite songs ...I was really upset .Similaraly "Naan vakka pattu"(Desi Geetham " is also a copy ..
  
  2.I do not know why Illayaraja is not comin different ...AZHAGI ,KASI are good albums but one would not like to BUY it ...Also he is trying for western (In Devan -Sexy Bomb ,Teen Age)which is a ytotal crap .He can maintain his own style and yet give something different as in Devathai ,TIME ,SETHU ..
  
  3.He never releases his BGM ....If he releases iam sure it would have good sales ....He is the best BGM MD who is qualified for hollywood ....Especially LAJJA and HEYRAM are better than many english film BGM's

  Mumbai Ramki - "Illaya Nila" was NOT a copy.... but this song was taken into HINDI by some other MD - actually it was *exchanged*.... the song "Kannavu Kaanum Vaazhkaai Yaavum" - is a complete dubbing/remake/copy of some other hindi song by the MD who took the "Illaya Nilla".... and fyi, this news has been said atleast 1001 times in newtfmpage.....
  
  and in my opinion, other than the IR Fans (and HCIRFans), there will be no one to buy the BGM.... and also, AZHAGI and KASI - i thought that they did well in Cassette/CD sales....

  Kanavun Kanum Vazkkai song is a copy. But Balumahendra made a special request to IR to use this tune.

  Unmai - i don't think my "Opinion" is biased - but people are....
  
  and where do u live ? cause as far as i know, people in INDIA buy things because of *brand* name - like ARR's album, RKs movie, KAMAL movie, BAJAJ scotter... tell me what % of people buy stuff based on *quality* ???? i wish people were like that... but unfortunately i feel, its not like that....

  Sabesan.. before ARR launched his career all of us were IR fans. So obviously anybody above 27-28 will buy that. Even the hardcore fans of ARR must be the fans of 70-80 music of IR. There was simply no one else. I have chandrababu collection, PBS collection. A.M.Raja collection, Kannadasan Thathuva padal collection... I am not a hardcore fan of any of them. I just love the music i have it.. Ofcourse.. people buy beause of brand name.. Its like saying PANASONIC TV will be bought only by PANASONIC lovers!!! How many such lovers is the Question? There must be thousands.. if i am right you are one of them!! Kamal is one of them!!... My point is ARR has terminated anybody's career like IR did to MSV!! There are so many MDs all of them having fair share. I think if i am not wrong, Bharadwaj gets more opportunity than ARR or anybody else. This is just my observation.

  I think it has go by Brand name ..Otherwise it is diffcult to predict the quality before buying the cassete ...Same is the case in every commercial item ....!from PEPSI to PIZZA
  
  And peopel in INDIA do see quality ....What do u say abut Minnale ..?If the reason was MAdhavan then ENNAVALE audio sales should also be good ..But it was not ...What about AZHAGI ,KASI,SHAHJAHAN sales..?Peopelk do see quality ,but first preference will be BRAND...
  
  
  In my opnion ILLAYARAJA is the RAJA for BGM but definetly not for songs ...Even his latest venture "Enn ManaVannil " does not have the quality to make a mark ......He should give performances like sethu ,time devathai to excell ..He is just existing ..he has films ,but allof them are low budgets ..Does any of the new or Top level directors prefer him ..?

  Mumbai Ramki!! Top Directors do not prefer him not because he is bad!! But because they are not on good terms!! What was the last movie of Maniratnam with Illayaraja. I think it is Anjali..
  Any problem with music in that movie. Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal is the last movie of Balachander with IR. Any problem with the music there? Nadodi Thendral is the last movie of BR-IR combo? Anything wrong with music in that movie? Tell me the movies that IR has worked with these directors
  Balachander, Bharathi Raja, Maniratnam... Tell me one movie of these folks where IR has failed as an MD. Ramki you have conveniently left out Ivan. His performance in Ivann is outstanding.

  of course taste differs ...But when i compare IVAN songs with sanagmam ..or say sindu Bhairavi ...i will say IVAAN is not excellent ...I will AGREE that Bharati was an outstanding ALBUM ..But IVAAN ..not so ..Bharati had that Genius,pURE MUsic ..IVann lacks that ..The problem is that ILLAYARAJA does not get good projects ....ALso in IVAAN songs like "apdai pakarthu ","Mel topila","dhool" could have been better ...
  
  I agree the case of mani ,balanchandar....
  But after VEERA i will say he did not have a big film ..except SIRAICHALI (in which he did well)

  I thought Sudha Ragunathan did well in those three songs... I think Sangamam was not scored by Illayaraja!!! Since you couldn't help comparing i tell you Ivan songs are little heavy carnatic composition. They are such a delightful compositions from the maestro. Nithyasree vocal for Sowkyama is not as good as in her regular carnatic songs. Sangamam didn't have any hardcore carnatic song. On top of that that is the only movie he made an attempt to compose carnatic based song. I guess Sangamam is not such an extraordinary album.
