IMO, Rafi's voice bores me very - really very - quickly! In some songs, his "konjals and kuzhaiyals" are too much!

I am repeating this from the thread "SPB the greatest"
Listen to the songs(tip of ice berg)
Mannil Inda, Pani Vizum, Keladi kanmani , Unnai partha pinbu naan, Nenju kulley yennar
Shanmuga (Avvai shannmugi) and its understandable why SPB is regarded by many in south as the best.
There are many gems of his in Kannada(Shilegalu sangeetha..from Rathasaptami and Telugu(Shankar Bharanam,...) too.
He cerainly is a living legend and may be the best male singer around today but certainly not in the league of
Rafi.
If you are a serious listener of all good music then u will realize that no male singer is in Rafi's league.
Listen to Kya hua tera vaada,Parada hai Parada,Tum mujhey yun,Ajahun aaye baalma, Dil key jharokon mein tujh ko,
Khilona jaan kar,Parbat key us paar,Hum to chaley pardes,Dil ney pyaar kiya hai ik bewafaa and any doubts would dissolve.
There is one song "O duniya key rakhwaaley".Listen NOT to the movie version but from his CONCERT collection. Its a serious request,
because in my experince itself in four different places friends with no hindi/indian music exposure have asked me who the singer
was. They found it too appealing. But if u understand hindi then it will exercise all ur brain cells and emotions.
This and other songs like "Ajahun aaye baalma" will show what human throat can do.
The modulation in place like ""AAaye bahAAr Khiley purva" in the above song are out of the world (too much and too quick).
In fact in this song the lady voice cannot match him.
People with no special inclination to music also have fallen in love with songs like "Kya hua Tera waada" bcos of the
emotions his style and delivery brings about.
Off-course if u dont understand the language then i dont expect u to make a proper judgement.
It is again the reason for me not listing the various songs to show how versatile he was.
Songs like "Tum mujhey yun bhula naa paaogey" are considered female domain and male singers cannot do justice to those.
Listen to this song and u will find how partial god has been to Rafi.
He could sing these efforlessly without sounding femalish. He has so many facets in his singing that copying him is almost impossible
In fact many Rafi clones end up with thin femalish voices(Sonu Nigam for one).
More than Yesudas and SPB considering him as their idol,
what is important is that they say he is the most gifted singer with unmatched verstality in past and present.
Yesudas told it better than i can in one of the episode of SaReGaMa. I dont intend to repeat that.
One of my old Tamil favourites is "Paal Polavey" by PS and the only male singer i can think of who can sing the same
with the same effect is Rafi.(But his pitch would go further)
When u ask a person to speak about some XYZ then obviously they are going to speak good about that XYZ.
But with Rafi (and Lata), the name comes whenever someone speaks about music.
Mannadey was the judge in one of the music programs and the anchor(Sonu) was praising him. Mannadey stopped him in between and said
"only rafi deserves such praise and no one else" and he went on talking about rafi and lata.
One of the many reasons Rafi cant be matched is that his voice remains completely stable at highest pitches.
Also listen to "Dil key Jharokon mein tujh ko".
One of my friends from Yesudas club says "others will have to scream or use nose to reach the same pitch
(Charanam starting with "Kal terey jalvey paraaye" of above song).
Please do not get back with some list of SPB (and discuss that) as u cant list anything of his i wouldnt have enjoyed/unheard.(Both in tamil and Kannada)
He is a living legend whose singing i love but Rafi stands apart from any comparison(male singer). U will hear the same from any
other south indian also who has listened to both.
ENJOY MUSIC.

the statement that rafi is the greatest singer cannot be accepted at all. it is spb,the greatest and the tallest and the longest living legend in indian film music.

Vardini If u dont know hindi or dont listen to HFM then its no point discussing.
(Seeing ur blunt reply thats what i feel)
Else go back and read again what i have said.
(Even Bala doesnt agree with u)
At least for music sake listen to some songs i mentioned.
Again- Enjoy music

Shruti,
SPB/KJY have great regards for Rafi agreed, but it not ratify Rafi is better than any singer we know in India. I don’t agree rafi is best of the best in India. No doubt he is a legend as far as Hindi cinema goes.
Shall we list the type of songs spb and rafi has done..
1. Erotic or romantic
2. Comedy
3. Pathos
4. Pop or rock or fast paced numbers.
5. Melody
6. Classical, (both Carnatic and Hindustani.)
7. Voicing (spb has done various kinds voicing, indradu chandradu is one example)
8. Pronunciation.
9. Different dialects in every language.
10. Actors sung for, he uses different voicing for each one of them. You can guess the actor by hearing the type of voicing he adapts, (yes I can do it).
IMHO: SPB is more versatile while Rafi is not
Btw:
I do ENJOY music. Like you I have also heard music, might be more than you who knows, so don’t discount me,Please Answers above questions.

Mohd. Rafi is the best of the best we know in India !!. I will compare the two with what you have listed :
Erotic & Romantic
rafi : the master of romantic songs and erotic hype songs.
spb: good in romantic numbers and teasing numbers as well
Comedy
rafi: he was the best at singing for comedians and changing his style for them. Ex. Johnny Walker, Mehmood etc.
spb: can improvise his voice for the character but nowhere near rafi.
Pathos
Don't even talk about this comparison because it is baseless to compare anyone to rafi. Anyone who has heard him will tell you the same thing.
Pop or rock or fast paced numbers.
rafi: was the best at this. listen to the shammi kapoor numbers and you will have your answers. also listen to the RDB numbers by rafi and you will find out.
spb: also can sing these type of numbers but nowhere as good as rafi
Melody
rafi: excellent, sweet, soft, beautiful.
spb: also good, excellent, soft.
Classical (both Carnatic and Hindustani.)
rafi : rafi was a master at classical music. his voice was classically trained and he sang beautiful classical numbers. He was mostly trained in Hindustani music.
spb: mostly trained in Carnatic music and also is good in singing it, but no where near rafi. SPB's voice is not as trained classically than rafi's.
7. Voicing
rafi: the king of changing his voice for different situations.
spb: also good in changing his voice for different types of situations.
Pronunciation.
rafi : his pronounciation was above excellency. When you hear his songs you can see the pureness of each word coming out in his pronounciation. He also had excellent pronounciation in south indian languages as well.
spb: also good in pronounciation in south indian languages. Also good in hindi/urdu. I feel that people who say he has an accent are unfair to him. he still sounds good.
Different dialects in every language.
above mentioned for both of them .
Actors sung for, he uses different voicing for each one of them. You can guess the actor by hearing the type of voicing he adapts.
Don't even compare spb to rafi here. Rafi studies the character of each actor he sung for. He personally took time to get their shades of personality into their voice. Listen to Shammi Kapoor or Dharmendra or Rajendra Kumar or every actor he has sung for. Even for Amitabh Bachchan he had a different voice. Singers today try to do that but they cannot. No other singer can match up to that except Rafi.
If SPB himself agrees to rafi being the best and more versatile then how is he better than SPB. Why do you think he has the title RAFI SAHAB !!!. Why do you think his passing away shook the whole industry !!!. Because he was always in demand from the time he started his career. After his demise, the whole industry succumbed to what it is today. Why do you think more than 20,000 people followed his casket to it's burial place !!. Why do you think almost every singer today models himself on Rafi Sahab !!. Nobody can replace him and nobody is better than him !!!. He is a once in a lifetime miracle which India had the honour of receiving !!.

1,00,000 people came to mgr and anna
please dont throw vague and political arguments,
Indianmusic fan i dont see any logic in your psting, you have said blindly spb is now where near rafi...prove with some examples,
I would say rafi would struggle to sing "shankara"...
