I am quite a fan of Salil C, and he is my favourite MD in India. I want to know more about his TFM contribution

Very Less.
1) Background score for 'uyir' in the '70s
2) Music Director for 'Azhiyatha kokangaL' by Balu Mahendra (mostly used the score he set for his other language movies like 'kadhali..senkathali' ('nellu' - malayalam - Lata Mangeshkar)
3) Arranged music for a movie 'Karumbu' to be directed by Ramu Kariat (of Chemmeen fame) in the 60's. Recorded 'Kanalvari' from Chilapadhikaram - a Tamil epic - in KJesudoss's voice - movie was not released

Salilda scored music for a movie called 'dhooraththu idi muzhakkam'. (i think it's a remake of chemmeen). it had a good song 'uLLamellaam thaLLaaduthE'

Ravi,
haven't heard that song for years. Any mp3 of that available on the net?
Salilda, I think was a major source of inspiration for IR. You can hear it in his arrangements.

I've also heard IR speaking very highly of SC in one of his interviews.

ravi,
DIM is not a remake of chemmeen.

S, maybe not. but the story seemed quite similar to chemmeen. it might have been inspired by chemmeen.
nandu, i too havent heard the song for years. i last heard it when the film was shown on DD on sunday afternoon several years back. i doubt if even a Real Audio version is available on the net, leave alone MP3.

wow! I feel exhilarated to think of the song "ULLamelaam ThaLLaadudhE"! Ravi, it was NOT just a good song, it's a GREAT song! I remember this song being aired again and again in AIR in those days. Thank you very much!

IMO, IR kind of took off from where Salilda left off, as far as arrangements go. Both were highly influenced by Western Classical composers.

Salilda's music for Azhiyadha Kolangal was outstanding especially Naan Ennum Pozhudhu, sung by SBP. This movie was based on Summer of '42, indianized well and made into a visual journey into childhood by Balu Mahendra.
I would love to watch this movie sometime..

Do you have the PS version?
Can you believe we are now enjoying these verses from ChilappathikAram written 1800 years ago?
No wonder Barathiyaar wrote "nenjai aLLum silappathikAramenROr maNi aaram padaiththa thamizhnAdu"'
Thanks a lot!

Neel,
Man, you did a great job. You know what, I tried many famous audio dealers when I was at India to find this song, but most of them didn't even know that such a song existed ! Thanks a lot for finding it and also sharing it with us.
Salil Choudhury is the best among Light Music Directors who could fuse Indian and Western streams of music. And this song would be one of the best examples to highlight his sense of 'fusing' it (I am not confusing it with the fusion music or the 'hybrid' music we hear today). No wonder he was an inspiration to many music directors.
I am also trying to find another beautiful song from the Malayalam film 'Rasa Leela' : "Kiliye Kili Kiliye...". I am sure you must be a lover of Salil Choudhury and you must have it too. I would be very thankful to you if you have this song and can upload it.

Neel,
There is another version of the same song. If I remember it right the sequence in that song was slightly different. It had a chorus set to twice the speed of the tune and I guess the lead vocals was by a female singer. Do you have that version too ?
While Yesudas is so refreshing (he was in his youth when he sang this and it had a subtle charm), he is still not a Tamil by birth and we all know that he wasn't good when it came to a few Tamil letters. He seems to have taken special care for this song, but still it would be interesting to speculate if TMS could have done it even better. I am just curious to listen to the other version to see if it is better by the accent. Please upload it if you have it.
I must have heard the song more than 15 years before, when Ceylon Radio was famous for its broadcast in and around Madurai District. This song has such charm that it wouldn't erase itself from one's memory even after such a long period of time !

AV,
Thank You. I have heard it earlier from that site, but since it is streamed, I never get it straight (cant download it too :)). The quality of recording is also not good. The song uploaded by Neel was produced at an earlier time and it has a much better quality (I know the bitrate and such things at which it was uploaded matters). Thats the reason I asked Neel if he had that song.
I have also searched Coolgoose, but it doesnt have it.

Venkat,
I am delighted to see a kindred soul who went through an almost similar experience I went through with this song! Yes, it does beautifully portray the desolate feelings of Kovalan.
That was a very nice article of yours and thanks for sharing it. I look forward to your song files of both the versions.
You know what, your name sounds a bell to me. Probably we communicated on the same subject elsewhere!!! :)

Venkat,
Well, you gotcha ! I dont usually use a different screen name, but then on one occasion, someone in newtfmpage by mistake mentioned Picasso as the creator of Monalisa, and just for fun, I replied to him with my name as 'Da Vinci' to see if he could be reminded of the real artist. Of course, he did realize his mistake, but somehow I was fascinated by the name and I have continued with that screen name !

Two divine SC songs - downloadable too! - in a span of ten days! My, my, talk about serendipity!
Thanks to Neel D and Thenraja,K. for their effort and graciousness.
I seldom visit this thread, but I am glad I did today!
The duet by VJ-KJY is a song that is evergreen. Spirited, Bouyant, and brimming with joie de vivre!
KJY's voice in this - and his stresses and word endings are a marvel. VJs short two-second taan in the middle is a masterstroke. The move to the charanam - like a slow dip in a clear pond - evokes a sensation (in just the arrangement) of ripples undulating. The chorus is signature SC, harking back to the other lives of Madhumati.
The singing duo captured a slightly modernised magic (similar but not the same) in the duet Manjadikunnil Manimughil fron Manjil Virinja Pookkal. Does anyone have a MP3 version of this song? Please?
