Nammaooru idhai list poda aarambikkuradhukku
munname naan idhai aarambichchudaren. I think
S. Janaki sang only a few songs in Thamizh before
IlayaRaja came into TFM. Most songs that she
sang in this Pre-IR period were great ones.
Here shall we make a list of these "old" Janaki
songs? To get started, here are a few that I
can recollect:
1. Singaara Velane - Konjum Salangai
2. Thookkam un kaNgalai thazhuvattume - A.Mani
3. Poojaikku vandha malare vaa - P.Kanikkai
All songs from Policekaaran Magal:
4. Indha mandraththil odi varum
5. Andondru ponaal vayadhondru pogum
6. Ponnenben siru poovenben
7. O O O maampazhaththu vaNdu - movie?

Avargal came in 1977, a year after Annakkili.
So let's leave "kaatrukkenna veli" out. (Just
for mentioning, the movie has another nice
Janaki song: IppadiyOr thaalaattu paadavaa)
More:
1. Koondhalile ney thadavi - Kalyaana oorvalam
2. Chinnanjiriya vannap paravai - Kungumam
3. Azhagukku marupeyar pennaa - Annamitta Kai
4. unnidaththil ennai koduththen - A.Or Manam
5. Sollaththaan ninaikkiren
6. Then sindhudhe vaanam - P.Thanga Manasu
7. Poongodiye poongodiye - School Master
8. Ulagam, azhagu kalaigalin surangam - U.Su.Vaa
9. Anandham indru aanandham - Idhaya Veenai
10. Endhan paruvaththin kelvikku - Su.Thaangi
(BTW "O O O Maampazhaththu vandu" is also
from Su.Thaangi)
11. Chiththirame solladi (V.Adai)

I can give you something else on SJ. The days before she came to sing for IR, she was ruling the roost in the Mallu filmi scene. In fact she has got nearly 5 Kerala State awards for Mallu songs. Then people like Chitra,Sujatha came on the scene and SJ had to return to Tamil.

I started compiling a list of Pre-IR Era Jaanaki
songs, and formed some notes:
1. SJ probably started singing in Tamil Films in
1960. One of the following is probably her
first:
thennangkeetru koondhalilE (P.T.Paar)
anbaalE thEdiya (Dheivap PiRavi)
Does anyone know if she sang a song in
Paavai ViLakku?
2. It's very clear that director Sridhar was the
one who gave so many chances to SJ in her
early years, then followed by MGR and then
K Balachander. Most of these songs was with
MSV/TKR or MSV as MDs.
3. SJ seems to have had a great year in 1962, but
for some reason, only a few here and there after that!
Can anyone tell me if she was the lady voice in the
following songs:
angE varuvadhu yaarO - Netru Indru Naalai
vaarEn vazhi kaaththiruppEn - Uzaikkum Karangal?

Is it SJ with CSJ in "Kutraala aruviyilae kuLichadhu poal irukkumaa" from Paavai ViLakku?
"Angae varuvadhu yaaroa" is SJ.
Watched "Madhuraiyai Meetta Sundara Pandiyan" last week for the first time. "Thendralil aadum koondhalil kandaen mazhai thandha maegam" & "Amudha thamizhil ezhudhum kavidhai"--is it SJ? (It may not be pre-IR era though)

SJ sang 'OhO enthan daarling' and 'kaalaiyum nIyE' from thEnilavu. Her pronounciation of 'daarling' is so effortless and lovely. It was again a Sridhar movie. Was it in 1960?
After Sathiya Keerthi's observation, I too think that Sridhar had a special liking for SJ. thEnilavu, avaLukkenRu oru manam (unnidaththil), iLamai Unjal, naanum oru thozilaaLi, thenRalE ennaith thodu and even his last (??) thanthuvittEn ennai had songs by SJ.

I was wrong. I think the "Pavai ViLakku" song I was trying to recall was "Aayiram kann poaddhaadhu vannakiLiyae Kutraala azhagai naam kaannbadharkku vannakiLiyae".
Pags:
The Kutralalm song you are thinking about sung by Seerkazhi for Muthuraman is "Kutravala malayilae kudhithu vandha Thamizhilae vatraadha paerazhagae nee vaazhga". The movie is "Uyiraa Maanamaa".
So, which movie is the other Kutralam song by Seerkazhi is from?
Aravind:
I think Sridhar (unless Sivaji/MGR were involved) tried to move away from TMS, and to some extent PS. Some of Sridhar's movies were THE romance movies of yester-years and his judgment might have been to use PBS/AMR/SJ for a softer, sentimental touch (I endorse his judgment).
- From: Ravy (@ eagle.vapower.com)
on: Wed Sep 3 13:59:42 EDT 1997
Kanchana:
I think Sridhar was right in choosing SJ for some of his soft songs. But talking about his judgement I cannot help recalling a couple of instances in which his judgement failed him.
1. He rejected Hemamalini for not being photogenic enough.
2. He rejected the story of 'Pudhiya Paravai"(by Dada Mirazi) as it was not appealing enough. (Dada Mirazi ended up directing the film himself and you know the rest).
Till today I wonder what made Sridhar to reject a story like Pudhiya Paravai.

What are the actual words to the P.T.Paar PBS/SJ "Thennangeetru....."? Bones wrote in another thread that it was written by Jayaganthan, and it is one of the PBS favorites for at least two of us here. Anyone who knows the lyrics, could you please put down at least the complete pallavi? Thank you.

Or, is it "thennankeetru sOlaiyilE"?
Ravy & Kanchana:
I think the reason why Sridhar probably rejected
Pudhiya Paravai was that the story was a copy from
some English movie. (I remember seeing a copy
of the same storyline in a TV-movie, sometime
in 1982 or so on CBS, in which Shivaji's character
was done by that actor who acts as BJ Honeycut
in MASH. In the titles they mentioned that the
story was borrowed from some OLD English movie;
I have forgotten the names of both these movies.
While on this topic, I cannot resist digressing to
mention that both "Kuzhandhaiyum Dheivamum" and
"Shanthi Nilayam" stories are "dubbaa" copies of
two OLD Hollywood movies! I have seen both these
movies on American TV, but I don't remember the
titles. I should mention that in all these cases
the Tamil versions were much better than their
English originals!)

I am not sure whether 'puthiya paravai' was based on a Hollywood movie. But it was certainly based on 'Chasing the Crooked Shadow', a Hitchcock novel. Was there a movie by that title?
- From: Kanchana (@ ww-tk02.proxy.aol.com)
on: Thu Sep 4 08:55:57 EDT 1997
Pudhiya Paravai's story was based on Hitchcock's story mentioned by Aravind, just as Kalangarai ViLakkam was based on Hitchcock's Vertigo.
Kuzhandhaiyum Deivamum is an adaptation of the movie Parent Trap (changes made to suit the Indian culture of yesterday--the American movie had divorced parents & the Dad is engaged to a younger woman of his choice.) IMO, the Thamizh version is better than the Hollywood version.
Shanti Nilayam takes the fun stuff from Sound of Music & the serious stuff from Bronte's Jane Eyre novel (my favorite book during high school years .)

I heard the following song on Malaysian Radio:
(SJ with PBS) inba ellai kaaNum nEram

movie was released in 1960. It could be that
this was SJ's first song!

Today I heard another oldie by PBS & SJ:
malarOdu viLayaadum thendralE vaaraay
from the movie, Dheiva Balam (1959).
This is the earliest Thamizh film song by
SJ that I know of. I felt that SJ has sung
this song wonderfully well. Another thing I thought
was amazing: her voice of 1959 sounds like
her current voice! A constant voice for about 40 years?

Sathiya Keerthi:
When was Paadhai Theriyudhu Paar released? I've never seen the movie, haven't been able to get the video so far, and am very, very curious about that PBS/SJ duet.
SJ does have an amazing voice which has stood the test of time well.
The Paavai Vilakku humming stays a mystery: LRE's humming in the later songs(Pavala kodiyilae, kallelaam) has always been higher-pitched than this PV song. The hum seems too "light & airy" to be Jamunarani's, but it could be. The Vanna Thamizh Penn Oruthi humming is one of the best "hums" in TFM since it blends so well with the instruments in the background, and with CSJ's voice in the tail end. (Thank you--because of your question, I got to watch & enjoy Pavai Vilakku once more. All of CSJ's songs are great--wonder who wrote the lyrics?)

This song is from Sabaash Meena - KaNa inbam kanindhadheno. I had heard about this song from my uncle but got to watch it only about 10 years ago. If I can recall it right, this is how the scene goes..
Sivaji and Ratna(? one movie heroine) would be walking in the rain with one umbrella struggling to keep themselves dry but a gusty wind would rip the umbrella apart and shedding all their inhibitions about the rain they start singing this one. Sivaji at one point of time singing and rolling over the ground with gay abandon. Excellent picturisation (inspite of being B & W) and a beautifully tuned song to go with.
I still remember whenever it rains my uncle used to tease my aunt quoting this song. 'varayaa jolliya "kaaNa inbam" paadittae oru walk poyittu varalam'
Does anyone know what Raagam is this one?

Thenankeetru unjaliley is indeed a beautiful song - slow, lazy and caressing. Will I incur everyone's wrath if I were to compare this song with the new "Malarey mounama" another lazy song?

I enjoy singing along with the malarae song because it is one of those rare songs today where you can actually understand the words! However, IMO it doesn't come close to "thennangeetru" in the feelings it can evoke (for me). I might be biased since I grew up with the "thennangeetru" song. M.D. for Meenda Swargam is T.Chalapathi Rao. This movie is a great favorite with my parents who are Sridhar fans, so I know something about it. The Naatyam song you are thinking about is aadum aruL jyothi by Seerkazhi and M.L.Vasanthakumari. That's a beautiful song, my favorite part of that song is the stanza which starts with Seerkazhi's word by word rendition of raagam--baavam--thaaLam with nattuvaangam in between, and MLV's repetition of those lines in tune as raagam baavam thaaLam saerndha baradha kalai. Along with thuyilaadha Raja's voice is great in kalayae en vaazhkayin dhisai maatrinaai (If you like these, how about Raja in kaalayum neeyae maalayum neeyae in Thaen Nilavu? 'bharatanatyam'aspect of the film rather than
padminis oru thalai kaadhal .Anyway Sridhar had
a good music taste and almost all his films had
good songs.

started. (Appappa yaaraachchum SJanaki patriya

Ramki:
Thanks for the info. From what you say, MSV seems
to have made some agressive moves in those days. But
I thought Muktha Srinivasan and MSV had an excellent
relationship throughout their careers. (Muktha
was the one faithfully giving chances to MSV
even in the 80's when MSV was fading away!)
It appears that AMR was a very tough customer to
work with. So the irritation he gave to MSV while
singing under him is understandable. We will be
posting an article (don't worry, it is in English)
by N.Krishnaswamy, in PPP, when we update it
next week. This article is titled: AMR: The
melody maker who would not compromise.
In the interview of Kalki (see the separate thread)
IR has said that a musician may fail to succeed
even if he is extremely talented; perhaps he
had AMR in his mind when he said this!
Whatever may be the reason, it was A BIG LOSS for
TFM that AMR did not get to score music for many
more movies. K.Parisu, Thenilavu and Adipeukku
had wonderful music. Did AMR score music for
any other movies?
It is also sad that AMR died tragically after an
accidental fall from a moving train several years ago!

Thx for sharing the story--losing AMR to industry politics was our loss as the audience for melodious music. kalayae en vaazhkayin, kaalayum neeyae, nilavum malarum paadudhu etc. are just a few examples.
I don't like Meenda Swargam movie either, I think it's too slow and too contrived. I saw the movie in the U.S. because I absolutely love the songs. (But my parents like the movie a lot--must be a generation gap here.) One correction: I don't think it is oru thalai kaadhal from Padmini's character; both are in love, but Gemini's character marries someone else since he wants her to be devoted to her baradha kalai (noble sentiments, I guess), but in the end his wife dies and he gets together with the heroine anyway. Hope I'm recalling this right.

'chevvanathil oru natchathiram'song in one of those satellite tvs. The picturisation was terrible(but we cant expect anything more those days)
Does anyone know abt the picturisation of 'varuven naan unadhu maaligaiyin vaasalukke, aeno avarasamae ennai azhaikkum vaanulagae'from Malliga?(My mom says the song is for a college drama but she wasnt sure)

Though I have not seen 'kalaikovil', I heard the story partially. 'muLLil roja kaLLurum roja' is a favourite of mune too. I have read long back that this movie was produced by MSV and Art director Ganga.

I think Chandrakantha was a talented artiste.
But she lacked the beauty and grace of other heroines. She gave a good performance in idhu sathyam

One related tit-bit: Sridhar was making
KalaiKoyil and Kadhalikka Neramillai
around the same time. Since MSV had been requesting
Sridhar to take him as the producer for one of his
ventures, Sridhar gave the choice to MSV to decide
which one he wants to be the producer. MSV chose
KalaiKoyil. But Sridhar told MSV that he
expected Kadhalikka Neramillai to be a
better hit (he didn't say he expected the other
to be a flop) and that MSV would be better off
producing K.N. But, for some reason, MSV
chose K.K and ended up losing a lot from it.
Perhaps he was attracted to K.K because it
was a story concerning music artistes! In general,
MSV has always faced terrible luck as a producer.
(Recently, his son produced Senthamizh Paattu
(great music jointly with IR), which was produced
by director Vasu (hot at that time), and it flopped!)

Sathiya Keerthi
Saw 'senthamizh paattu' recently on SunTV. Had to see that movie just to stay awake and watch the Highlights of the Pakistani Massacare at Toronto.
It deserved a flop. padamaa athu? The movie was as cheap and third-rated as chinna thambi. PVasu has real perverted cheap ideas. inthak kEvalamaana padaththukku ippadi oru paattu thEvaiyaa?

I fully agree with Aravind about Senthamizh Paattu.
For those who haven't seen the movie and want
to see it because it has good songs:
FORGET IT.
But, somehow Chinna Thambi became a big hit.

Yesterday I bought a pre-recorded cassette of songs
by an old-time male singer. (We have not mentioned
this singer till now in this thread.) I found 4 of his
duets with SJanaki: (These are nice tunes, but,
for some reason, have not become popular)
1. iLaya kanniyin azhagiya vadhanam malarndhadhu evvidhamO
from Abalai Anjugam (1959)
2. padikkap padikka nenjil inikkum paruvam endra kaaviyam
from Rathnapuri ILavarasi (1960)
3. kaatchiyum needhaan kaRpanaiyum needhaan
kaNNilE pugundhu karuththinilE viLaiyaadum
from Ennai Paar (1961)
4. ethirkoNdu vaRavERkkuthE iyaRkkai nam kaadhalai
from Ennai Paar (1961)
Quiz: Guess who that male singer is!

Mrs Edwin:
You can get the lyrics of many old TFM songs from
PPP (Pazhaya PadapPaadalgaL Pakkam). If you
are using windows, you can even get the lyrics
