Today UnniKrishnan is giving a concert at Singapore. Related to
that, there was an interview with him in FM 96.8 Singapore where
listeners were allowed to chat with UK over phone. Even when he
speaks, UK has a gaNeer and sweet voice. There is a plain simplicity
in the way he speaks; very modest fellow. Now some items from
the interview ...
Questioner 1:
Now everyone knows that you started with Carnatic and them only came
into light music. Can you say how you got into Carnatic music?
UK:
My mother had great interest in music, but she never got the opportunity
to develop her musical skills when she was young. So she was very
determined that I should learn CM and do very well there. When I was
12 she forced me to start learning CM. I was sort of doing it mechanically.
When I entered college, I had the luck to be part of friends with great
interest in CM and that was the time I developed a great motivation.
I took part in competitions, won them and the motivation increased
further...
Questioner 2:
Can you say how you got to singing in TFM?
UK:
Actually, I never had a plan to sing for TFs. One day I got a call from
ARR; he told me that he listened to some of my CM recordings and he
felt that he could use my voice for one of his songs. I immediately
agreed. My first song was: ennavaLE in Kaadhalan.
Questioner 3:
How is it that you are able to sing both CM and TFM very nicely?
UK:
I was trained in CM from the beginning and so I have no difficulty
with it. The reason I am also able to do well in light music is,
indirectly because of KJJ. I have been a great fan of KJJ since
school days, and try singing his songs. I have even sung his film
songs in stages on several occasions. It was that training that helped
me sing TFM songs easily.
Questioner 4:
You sing both CM and TFM. Do you have difficulty switching between the
two?
UK:
I don't have trouble switching to CM at all. But there are difficulties
the other way. Especially, if I give a heavy CM concert one night and
go for a TFM recording early next morning, I cannot avoid doing the
TFM song in Carnatic style. In such situations, I usually get a gentle
reminder from the MD involved: Mr UK, konjam adakki vaasiyungO.
Then I correct myself.
Questioner 5:
Which TFM MD has impressed you the most?
UK:
(!!??#& silence) There are several MDs. Each one of them has certain
positive points.
Questioner 5 (vidaamal):
ellOr maadhiri neengaLum mazhppureenga. Sariyaana badhil sollunga.
At this point the show organizer interefered:
dharmasangadamaana kELviyellaam kEtka vENdaam; UK-ai vittudunga!
Questioner 6:
UngaLukku pidichcha raagangaL ennenna?
UK:
innOru difficult question! CM-il aayirak kaNakkaana raagangaL irukku.
ovvondrum ovvoru nalla type. evatrai pidichchirukku endru solvadhu?
Naan adikkadi aasaiyaay paaduvadhu: thOdi, kaambOdhi, sahAna.
Questioner 7:
UngaLukku pidiththa TFM and CM paadalgaL ennenna?
UK:
naRumugaiyE (Iruvar), aaraarO (Shakthi) in TFM, and,
ninnayE rathiyendru in CM.

I recently bought an album of UK hits. It
has 15 great songs. IMO, This album clearly demonstrates, that UK has completely mastered the
art of film singing.
Album starts with the famous number 'Manam virumbathe' from NN.
Second song is 'ninatha varam kettu', a recent IR
classic from the film kadahal rojave.
Third song is 'Nadiyorum veesum' from the film
alexandar (???, i guess), wonderfully sung and supported by great music.
Fourth song 'o devadhaiye, theudgiran mugavariye' looks like a typical deva number, movie ???.
Next song ' uyiril kalandha urave', IMO,one of the
unique song, I listened in recent times. Uk sucessfully imitated KYJ in singing this song, A classical based song accomapanied by a modern beat, and suprise, no indian percussions at all.
I cant wait to know the name of the MD for this song. film name ????.
'O venilave' from the film kadal desam is the
next song.
It follows by 'aarora enbadhallam' from the film
sakthi??. The string piece accompanies the song in
the saranam, is very good.
Next song 'unnai marandhu vallum oru pennam', looks like a typical IR number. No idea about the
movie though.
Next side starts with'o poornima'. I wont be surprised, if MD is Vidya sagar. movie ??
'Oru nallum unnai maravena' is the next song. Again movie and MD ????, well orchestrated song.
The next two are popular numbers 'vessum karruku' from the film ullasam and 'thendrale' from kadhal desam.
Next song 'Charumathi en charumathi' reminds me 'priyasakhi en priyasakhi' from the film gopura vasale. Looks like a IR number. It is a ok song and with UK struggling in singing high notes does not help the song either.
it is followed by 'En pennendru pirandhai' from the film Love today, music is by SIVA. This is by
far the best song of this album.
The album ends with 'kangalie samandhi poo', looks
like another IR number. Movie ???.
This album defn. gives the listener the pulse of current music trend in TF. Songs are melodious, beatsy and greatly assisted by the incredible singing talent of UK.

I have attended one of his cutcheries in music academy last season. Even now he has not got the evening cutchery lot. So he sings for the free cutchery time that is 1.00 to 3.00 pm. Even though the academy people are adamant and still not reconginsed him. His fans supported him very well. You should see the croud on that day. last time they have arranged extra speakers outside the auditorium, to help the fans to atleast
listen to his voice, outside from the auditorim. Hopefully unni will get the evening cutchery this time atleast.

BTW , I know Unnikrishnan on personal level for the past 10 years. He has not changed a bit since I saw him in his nature. Popularity has not affected him at all. His son is around 10 months old. I met him on Pongal day in his house. Talked to him for around an hour. His son's name is Vasudev Krishna. He is coming to US around September or so. He is coming to my place (Detroit) on OCT 31st 1998 for a music concert.
I am glad somebody opened a page for him, as his friend I thank you.
Veera.
