Same song sung by the different singers in the same movie. Let's leave out the pathos version. I would like to know which one you like and why
and that will become a starting point of a discussion..
Note to TFM group ---- Please note.. this is not a list making exercise.
Here is my list(?)
1.Chinnakannan azhaikkiran - BMK/SJ (no argument here - My vote goes to BMK version because of the superior music)
2. Kanden engum poo magal -SJ/VJ (Kaatrinilae varum geedham - I like SJ version more. SJ version has 3 stanzas while VJ's has only 2.
3. Nila kaigiradhu - Harini/UK (Indira) Harni because of her kuzhandaithanamana voice.
4. Annan oru koil endral (PS/SPB) - SPB version
because of the better rendering.
Your comments and list of songs please.......

I could recollect the following songs under the category u have mentioned.
1.Enge en jeevanE unnil kandEnE ennai thandhEnE - IR,(SJ & SPB(?)). I like the duet version because IR sings even the female's version of this song which I could not accept.
- Movie(Is it Uyarndha Ullam ?)
2.Naanaga naan illai thayE- IR, SPB. I like SPB's version. - Movie(ThoongadhE thambi thoongadhE)
3.Thenpandi seemaiyilE- IR,Kamal. I like IR's version as no one else could do have done justice except Raaja. His excellent rendering of this song is worth the mention in this topic - Movie( Nayagan )

One more addition:
Vaa vennila unnai thedudhE - Mella thirandhadhu kadhavu (SPB & SJ) - I like SPB's version.
Ravy:
I like UK's version of "Nila kaikigiradhu" than Harini because I felt that her voice was too childish.

sorry typo:
vaa vennila unnai thanE vaanam theduthE - Mella thirandhadhu Kadhavu (SPB, SJ).

Isn't the male voice that sings nila kaaygirathu Hariharan. My vote goes to Harini though.
Also in nErukku nEr the song 'manam virumbuthE' is sung by Harini and UK. I like the Harini version better in that case too. She has a sweet innocence in her voice that adds charm to the songs.

pottu vaiththa vatta nila (IR and KJJ) My vote goes to IR since I feel his voice is more suited to that song.. I haven't found another person who agrees with me on this till now. :-).
'idhayam oru koil' (SPB and IR). I like the lyrics in the IR version better, though there is no question as to who has sung it better.

Thooliyile aada vandha "Chinnathambi'(NOV & Kanchana,I mean the film :-) )
Was it SPB or Mano who sang the male version.
Anyhow I liked the male version
Pulveli Pulveli from"Asai". Well in this case its Chitra all the way.
I don't know if this song fits the discussion.
Maniyae Manikuyile from "Nadodi Thendral"- I like the way IR laughs at the end of those first few lines. On second thoughts maybe he would have done more justice to the song.
Does the song Senbagame senbagame from "Enga ooru
Paatukaran" fit into this list?? Asha bonsle & ????
The song Poovil Vandu koodum from "Kadhal Oviyum".
SPB sings the full length song, then SJ sings the first few lines. BTW was that all in the same song
or were they 2 different songs?
Megam kottatum - from "Ennakkul oruvan".Kamal and SPB sing this song. I think SPB's version was far better...

ThuLiyilE aada vantha is by Mano
Shenbagame shenbagame is a solo by Mano and then a duet by Asha Bhonsle and Mano. I like the duet because of Asha (Of course, you got to forget the pronunciation).
Here are a couple of other tandem songs.
Raja kaiya vacha in Aboorva sagotharagal. I like SPB's version(which is not in the movie) though the overall effect is good if you watch Kamal on the screen and 'playbacking' himself.
nooru varusham vazanum in Mapillai(?). Male and female solo. Don't care much for this one.

There isnt any duet versionn of shenbagamae shenbagamae. Mano,Sunandha and Asha sings them
seperately.
Btw Ravy, sorry to point out,u had mentioned
that we should leave out pathos version but
SJs version of Chinna kannan azhaikkiran is
clearly on pathos note
some more songs :
Nilavu thoongum neram:I prefer SPBs to SJ as
he brings a special flavour to the song
eduthu vacha paalum: again I prefer SPBs to SJ
as SJ doesnt really pleases our ears
Kaadhalin deepam ondru:Again SPBs
en jeevan paadudhu:Prefer KJYs to SJs
Anbu malargalae: prefer PSuseelas version compared
to SPBs and TMS as TMS kinda spoil it

Ramki
There _is_ a duet version of shenbagame. I know for sure 'cos I saw the song last week in a Ilayaraja hits collection. Nishanthi starts singing the song (in Asha's voice) and Ramarajan comes running towards her house. Towards the end of the song, she forgets the lyrics and Ramarajan completes the song. Mano just sings 3-4 lines.

Hmmm... Interesting topic. But off course, each person has his/her own taste. To each, his own. My comments on your selections:
Ravy - I wholehartedly support your choices.
cp - I prefer IR's version for all the three songs you mentioned. (In case, you didn't notice, IR doesn't sing just any song - but when he chooses to sing, he almost always do justice to the song.
Ravi - My vote for Manam virumbuthey goes to Unnikrishnan's version. It has got that classical touch. BTW, the song is in my current top 10. (No Kitcha, no sudden preference for Deva either. Nerukku Neir does have some good songs. Have you listened to them?)
As far as Ithayam oru koyil - I believe IR's version is superior - in fact I consider this song to be one of his very best.
Chinnathambi Kitcha - I concur with your choices. Shenbagame would not fit in this list as the other version is pathos. (Don't ask me what other version - Goundamaniyin vaazha pazha kathaiyaai aayidum!)
Kesav - I prefer Kamal's Raja kaiya vacha.
Ramki - There are 2 versions of Shenbagamey - Mano & Sunandha sing the happy one and AB sings the pathos one. Of course you knew that SPB's yeduthu vacha paalum is the pathos version to SJ's original - you must have slipped! :-))
On your other songs, I am behind you all the way.
Other songs that come to mind:
Naanaaga naan illei thaayey - IR sings with great unarchi
Kannukku mai azhagu - PS's voice is too old for this song
Vaa venilla - SPB's version is far superior
Kaakei siraginiley - There are two versions from two different movies (I think they should still qualify) I prefer Sulamangalam in Thirumaal Perumai
Inthe pachai kilikoru - I prefer KJJ's version - don"t ask me why - It's one of those inexpicable things!
Paar magaley paar - Do you know there is one more version by MSV - equally daunting? Anyway I prefer TMS's original.
Poovey poochoodavaa - KJJ does better than Chitra although the song was better suited for a woman.
Theney then paandi meeney - SPBala for obvious reasons
Raasaathi unneh kaanaathe nenju - Jayachandran for obvious reasons.
Would like to know others' reactions to the above.

wow! I didn't except this many songs even after leaving out the pathos version.
oops. Nila kaigiradhu is by Hariharan. Thanks Ravi for pointing that out.
Ramki: I didn't see Kavikkuyil. But interlude music in SJ's version didn't sound pathos.
CP: Nila kaigiradhu - in the movie was sung by a 6 or 7 year old girl. That's the reason I liked this more than Hariharan's version.
How about the Nenjam Marappadhillai (PS & duet) . I like the solo more than the duet.

There is a song sung by M'sia Vasu and a female version in the movie Sakalakalavallavan. Can't remember the title now. But I prefer Vasu's rendition.

There are THREE versions of shenbagamE shenbagamE: A solo by Mano, a duet by chitra (sunandha?) and Mano. as kesav pointed out Mano sings only the pallavai the last time around. The AshaB version is a pathos solo. So that doesn't count for our purposes.
I am listening to gaanakuyilE from poonjOlai. This too has three versions: by bavatharani&UK; IR; and SPB&Bava. I like the IR version better because it doesn't have Bava. :-).

Kithca: About poovil vandu koodum.. The songs are sung at different instances in the movie. The hero first sings it all by himself. Then he hears the herione's salangai and stops. When they meet again the herione sings those few lines to tell him that she is the same person.

Kannanin sannidhiyil(oru kodiyil iru malargal)-I prefer PS and JCs version compared to KJYs as the
lyrics are too good in the first
Pillai nila irandum vellai nila(neengal kettavai)-I like both the versions(KJY and SJ)
enadhu gaanam un kaadhil vizhavillaiya(oru thaiyin sabadham-rendume soga sequence dhan so no choice Ravy:))-I prefer KJY and SJs one compared to SPBs
andru oomai pennandro(parthal pasi theerum)-Definitely PS version compared to the duet
Nee dhana nee dhan nenje nee dhana(thalattu paadava)-SJ and ArunMozhis duet compared to the solo by Arunmozhi(ofcourse rite)
sollaiyo vai thirandhu(mogamull)-Arunmozhis compared to SJs
Poondhenil kalandhu(aenipadigal)-Defintely SPBs
oorellam un pattudhan(oorellam un pattudhan)- I feel hat Swarnalathas version was better than KJys(adikka varadheengappa)

Pags it is not UK. UKs first song with Raja
was in 'sathi leelavathi'. REgarding 'sollayo'
the cassette say its Arunmozhi but Msian Radio
says its by MGSreekumar. But to me it sounds like
Arun

Ramki: The solo version of neethaanE is a sOga song while the duet is only partially sOgam. Halfway through the song they meet and it is not sOgam after that. (paattai kEttu kandu pidikka mudiyaathu.. :)
There is a third version of oorellaam un paattu thaan by IR. I liked that version better. IR oru bakthiyOda paadi iruppar. :-).
Pags: The sollaayO song sounds definitely like Arunmozhi. My cassette also lists it as Arunmozhi.

I feel its UK because of his malayaalam-accented-tamil pronunciation for the lines "vaay thiRandhu..", "thiruppaavai padikka" etc., I donot find such variations in Arunmozhi's voice.
Sometimes, the cassette cover says something which is not quite right also. (there are many examples) May be we have to start a separate thread on that..

By the way, the (only) song by Arunmozhi in MogamuL is "nenjE gurunaadharin..". I dont know what the cassette cover says for this song though.

Pagalavan but im pretty sure its not UnniKrishnan.
UKs voice konjam softaanadhu but 'sollayo'has
a gambeeramaama voice.
Ravi in the duet version of 'needhaana'song they
dont meet but infact they part. I saw this movie
couple of times(thalai ezhuthu). The solo version
will be sung in memories of the heroes love(He will think that she has cheated him and blah blah)

About MogamuL :
- Sollaayo is in two different versions - one by SJ and one by M.G.Srikumar who is a mallu singer. (Raagam : Shanmugapriya)
- AruNmozhi sings one song in the movie which is Nenje gurunaatharin (Ragam : Naatagapriya)

I too think "sollaayo" male version is by Arunmozhi. (I don't remember seeing MGS in the
titles also.)
A related song for this topic:
Nee enge en ninaivugal ange - Mannippu
This must be a very rare song in TFM for it's rendered three times in the movie each time with a different tune!
- From: Ravi (@ greed.cs.umass.edu)

PG, pags, Ramki and Rajaram: I just dug up my 'mOgal muL' cassette. sollaaO is by MGS. :-). (sheepish grin).

Isn't a song being repeated three times but having the same tune all the three times rarer? eg. oorellaam un paattu thaan - oorellam un paattu thaan. All the three versions are identical except for the singers.

PG, pags, Ramki and Rajaram and Ravi - sollayO is by MG Srikumar. Before seeing the movie or the orig. audio cassette I was under the impression that it was by KJJ. But I saw MGS name in the titles and later on in the orig. audio cassette also.
NOV, I haven't heard the UK's version of "manam virumbudhe' but Harini's version is just too good. I can't believe it is devaa's music and the lyrics goes pretty well with the music without being paethal. Any idea who wrote the song?
There are 3 (or is it 4) versions of the song "gaana kuyile" in poonjolai(?) I like the Bhavatharini version more.
Aaru adhu aazhamillai - mudhal vasantham - I like the male version better (sung by IR?)
I like Chitra's version of pulveli - UK seems to give some extra clssical touch to it which somehow doesn't seem to go well with the song - Probably b'cos I had heard the Chitra version hundreds of times.
