Has Rahman's magic ended ? NEW!
[Source: News Today, June 2003]
Music director A R Rahman mesmerised Kollywood and Bollywood for the last 10 years. Since his scintillating debut as music composer in Manirathnam's Roja, he never looked back.
Popular directors and well-known producers lined up at his doorstep to get him come up with tunes for them. He single-handedly decided the fate of many movies and was one of the highly paid music directors in the industry.
But today Rahman seems to have lost his prominence in filmdom with mediocre tunes. In the last couple of years, his tunes for the films including Taj Mahal, Alli Arjuna, Udhaya and the recently released Parasuram have sunk without a trace. Does this spell an end to Rahman's magic?
Commenting on this, a senior producer in the Tamil film industry says: 'Rahman has reached greater heights in his career. After his album Vande Mataram, he had gone places. Meanwhile, the album Bombay Dreams brought international acclaim for Rahman, which no other music director could imagine. Hence, it is immaterial whether Rahman scores music for Tamil movies and his tunes succeed or not.'
Meanwhile, a director says, 'lots of young music directors, who can deliver hits, have made their appearance in the Tamil industry. The rise of Vidyasagar, whose recent numbers have been hits, the rise of Harris Jeyaraj, Karthik Raja, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Manisharma and Devi Sriprasad has given more choice to the producers, who are also competent enough to give quality tunes and more so they charge less when compared to Rahman.'
However, a few of his fans claim that he is competent enough to re-claim the top spot in the industry. They feel his forthcoming films - Boyz directed by Shankar, New to be churned out by S J Surya and Unnanku 20 Ennakku 18 by A M Rathinam's son Jothikrishna would do the trick. Once these movies get released, Rahman would certainly re-claim his top spot, they predict.

I agreed he ruled and gave very good music till four years back. I think till alaipayuthe. Am I right. For the past four years all his music sucked.
Boys is not that great like his past music.I lost hope on ARR.Ok we will wait and see how boys and Unnanku 20 Ennakku 18 is going to be.

People don't dream. ARR was never the ruler. As for the rest, all seem to be crap. After so long, the only person making so much impact is still Ilayaraza. Our great raza.

HAHA,
ARR IS THE BEST you must be joking,
boys sample songs are nothing in comparison with the uyirin uyirae song. HJ rulez, man! He brought a new trend with this song. Itīs rocking everywhere in our country (like the song thakka thaiya from dil se earlier).
Boys just sucks! It will be a flop and ARR lost his magic...just because of the fact that i didnt have the powerfull feeling which i had when i heard the kaake kaake samples in the boys samples

Going by votes on the homepage, Parasuram seems to be a hit but after listening to Parasuram and some other albums listed, definitely Parthiban Kanavu, and some harris jeyaraj movies had better melodies and better song structure than Parasuram. Is the voting system biased or?
just curious thats all... :)

I think shankar will implement a reserve your casette system for BOYS and the best time to do it would be on July 15 bcoz then he can delay it to Jul 28, like Baba......and we all know what happened after that....

ARR showed us majick in past when suresh peters and Hj was with him. ARR used them well. Now they both gone.. and arr'a majick is also gone. now is is struggling to give atleast a decent album. hmm IN future if he can find someone like hj he can manage to last in tfm for some time.

ARR WAS, he isn't. Gone are the days of AlaiPayuthe and Uyire. ARR today is all about BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEG flops like BABA, Kadhal Virus,Parasuram, and even Udhaya.
HJ's been giving good music for quite some time now, while ARR hasn't even come close.
ARR was flying high for long. It's time he got his feet back on the earth.

""The same thing wrapped in a different cover.""
thats what i'll say when listening to HJ, YSR..
they just keep repeating their tunes..
vidyasagar is good...
Ilaiyaraja...hmmmm i just don't seem to enjoy his latest songs anymore...he's not as good as in the 80's....his time is bygone... his latest Manasellam sucks big time...i feel sick hearing the BGM score in that movie...
For ARR, he will come back with a bang...just mark my words..HJ & YSR will never go beyond TFM... people will start to irk their repeating tunes in future songs...for sure their tunes will be the same..no changes...
ARR should just concentrate on giving quality music...thats all ..he just don't have to worry or care whether his music will be mass hit or not..sensible people like ARR fans will look foward in listening to ARR's quality songs...
good albums like ANTHIMANTHARAI & IRUVAR are not mass hits, but there are real good quality album...thats what ARR fans expect from him.... just good quality albums...and HE WILL PROVE IT !!

guys,
i just saw this news on BBC website, it is a few months old but it clearly say and i quote
"Rahman has achieved superstar status through his Bollywood music, and is reported to be the world's biggest selling living artist - with album sales of more than 40 million - and many more tapes of film music sold. "
if you dont believe me check out this link
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_midlands/2937655.stm
and please dont bother to compare ARR with local MD. it is like this, when i am taking abt tendulakar and praising him, suddenly you start saying that sachin is nothing and there is a boy near your house who plays at the play ground nearby and nobody over there can get him out. arey yaar, that guy barely managed to play at the national level(cos he ant survive even that), let alone the international level, and you want to compare him to sachin. now if some of u guys still didnt understand what i am saying, then in the story ARR is like sachin, who has got national and international acclaim for his "score" and the guy next door is your IR and the new local jokers like HJs and YSRs
Teja
ps: i am pretty sure that all the IR fans who dont have any useful arguement againest this, will as usual give reply with nothing but bad words. so if you dont have anything proper to reply, dont expect it to read or replied to.

Dear Teja,
Why bring in IR or anyone into this? All of us are well aware that he has done international music.
Why do you want to show album sales for ARR's music to prove he is good? So all the Indians who value and buy IR's music are idiots? Sure I would love it if IR is internationally acclaimed but I would only buy his music if it is good.
Let the music lovers be a critical judge of the music and not just accept it for the name sake.
It is quite unfortunate the a greater part of India and the World have failed to recognize THE most creative composer of our era, IR. But if ARR's fans not critical of his music then there is no way he is going improvise and will fade out soon.
