There r some great songs which have an eerie effect when we listen to them.Good examples could be "deiveega rAgam" (ullAsa paravaigaL) and "rAjA magaL" (piLLai nilA). This is NOT bcos of the context of the song. In fact I hadn't seen both the movies when I listened to them for the first time.
Any such experiences???

Eerie?Spooky?Or do you mean haunting?;-))
If eerie, I would think of
Devadai ilam devi..which would be the first in my list...many are the times when I have , in my innocent youth ,been terrified by the spookiness of this song that I never listened to it completely until recently!!!
Raja magal comes a distant second.
I think deiviga ragam, while haunting is certainly not eerie or spooky;-)))
Then there is Anbe vaa arugilae...the SJ version, definitely spooky, haunting and eerie.

Shankar, add these to your list :

I guess madhan hit the bull's eye. These r the kind of songs i wuz looking for.
Raj,
I have a different defn for haunting songs. Please check the haunting songs thread. From ur opinion on deveega rAgam , ur defn of haunting is close to my defn of eerie :-)
Well, u urself have told the diff betn spooky and eerie songs :-))
bb,
thonru thottu falls under the spooky songs category.
It's difficult to put that feeling in words ,but i'm sure madhan got it right.

I used to have nightmares as a kid that would break my sleep at night as this song haunted! my memories and would scare my nerves to procastinate any response to natures call. LRE's giggling and BGM had so much dreaded impact on me that i would either wake my mother up or would wait until dawn. The song is 'thaenAtRan karaiyinelE thaeniravin naduvinilae mohini pol vanthaen nathaa...' from the film uththaravindRi uLLE vaa'.
There is another song which had an excellent BGM having a eerie effect is 'agAyathil thottil katti' from the movie 'thinivE thunai', a jaishankar starrer.

A)Eerie :
\Ee"rie\, Eery \Ee"ry\,
1. Serving to inspire fear, esp. a dread of seeing ghosts; wild; weird; as, eerie stories.
She whose elfin prancer springs By night to eery warblings. --Tennyson.
2. Affected with fear; affrighted.
B)spooky adj
1: suggestive of the supernatural; mysterious; "an eerie feeling of deja vu" [syn: eerie, eery]
2: unpredictably excitable (especially of horses)
C) Haunting :
1.To inhabit or frequent as a specter; to visit as a ghost or apparition.
2.To frequent; to resort to frequently; to visit pertinaciously or intrusively; to intrude upon.
So, haunting, as you say is person-dependent. If
"Humma Humma" keeps on coming to my mind frequently AND consistently over a long period,I could call that a "haunting" song(Though such a possibility can only exist on paper or vaccum);-))
So, lets take up eerie and spooky .
As seen above eerie seems to suggest "inspire fear" as a primary consideration. And I would think twice before suggesting that "Deiviga Ragam" as fear-inspiring;-)))). Infact, for the same reason "unnai ethir paarthaen" too goes out of contention.
Spooky , OTOH, seems to require a definite suggestion of the super-natural.
That is the reason I contended that "Deiviga ragam" is not spooky or eerie
Devadai Ilam devi: Certainly eerie..inspires fear, unless you are of the resillient, tough nut to crack type of person;-)).
Spooky, too, as th suggestion of a super-natural presence, is definitely found in the 'spirited' interludes.
Anbe vaa arugilae: Same reasons. Eerie, spooky, and 'hanting' too.. for it is suggestive of a spirit haunting a house(as indicated by the storyline...the nuance being properly reflected in the music by Raja);-)))
Thondru thottu:
No suggestion of the super-natural. Not spooky.
I am not sure about it inspiring fear...though if one were a upper-class, feudal, abominably rich wastel, one may have to be frightned at the "Samharam the rich" tone of the song;-)))
Perhaps eerie.
Unnai ethirparthaen: No fear-inspiration. No suggestion of spirits. So, definitely not spooky or eerie ?
nenjam marappadhillai: Theres one song I was going to quote in my first post but just missed out. Spooky, eerie and certainly haunting my mind;-))
rameshb's song too fits the bill for spooky and eerie.
Digressing a bit, that naina barsen from Woh kaun thi!!! If there is one song that makes me feel frightened like a unsuspecting gent, who enters an elevator only to find in the fourth floor that his vital organs have been left behind at the third floor, this song is that song! Since it was rehashed as "Naane varuvaen" in tamil, one could perhaps justify its discussion here;-))

aagaayathil thottil katti mangai unnai kandaal - is a song from'Thunivey thunai' which I have always felt as haunting and I used to get afraid as a elementary school kid. What do you guys feel about this song?

In "Kaathirundhu Kaathirundhu" from Vaidhegi Kaathirundhaal the udukkai interlude with the following lyrics: paadaapaduththum kaadaa karuppaa...with one of the scariest male voices in TFM history made me shudder a few times. I was surprised that AIR didn't find it scary to air exorcisms in between songs.

Udhaya:)). Difficult to imagine you shuddering at anything;-))). Yeah, that one has an eerie, indeed spooky touch to it.
Velai: Hey how r u?!!! How about mailing me your identity?(Yaar kittayum solla maattaen;-)) )
"Paattezhudhi per vaangaradhu...thappu kandu pidichu..."..you get my drift, dont you?:))))
SL, as usual, has touched the nub..all of his three songs fit to a T tot he description eerie.
Yenge nimmadhi :Eerie but not spooky.
(The interludes with sowcar (or saraoja?) dancing in a frightening gown were indeed fearful:)))
Kana kaanum kangal mella: The surprisingly sophisticated interludes with that spooky female haunting saritha used to send a chill down my spine during the oliyum oliyums. Eerie, indeed

Friends, the inteludes in the song "Yen jeevan paadudhu, unnai thaan thedudhu, kaanaamal nogudhu dhinam vaadudhu " sung by KJY , MDed by IR is very eerie in its feel.......
The interlude in the song "Dheebangal pesum" in Devadhai , especially the second interlude gives you the "certain - kind - of - knotty -feeling - in - one's - stomach - in - anticipation - of - something terrible - to happen - or - realisation of- something terrible - that-has-already-happened" - you get it now ?
AMAANUSHYAM - that is the right word in Tamil - Udhaya should be able to give the exact menaing of this word - the songs I have mentioned and also "Deiveeha Raagam" from UP gives this strange vayathhil puliyai karaikkum ' ("kind-of-tamarind- juice secreting in stomach") feeling - hence they should all fall under this category.....
If you watch DEVAR MAGAN or MAHANADHI next time, listen to the BGM very carefully - in DM, especially the instruments used give you the anticipatory AMANUSHYAMAANA feeling of something tragic to happen - which induces an unknown feeling of fear in you.....
In 'Mahanadhi" again, when Kamal is sitting by the banks of the river talking to VMC Haneefa and Rajalakshmi, the moment the conversation shifts to the prospect of "making Money" , in the BGM, IR has used a strange kind of instrument which gives you the "feeling-of-watching-the-shadow-of-some-
unknown-doom" holding sway over Kamal's head (not literally, only figuratively) - since that scene, whenever, Kamal discusses money matters, the same BGM is repeated - let me explain to you this particular BGM piece - in the song "Andhi Mazhai" , in the second interlude, when the piano run ends and the violins give a stunning choric ensemble, in the background of the violins piece, some strange instrument is played as a base for the violins - the same instrument is used by IR in Mahanadhi in perhaps a slightly different manner to give the "amaanushyam"aana feeling....
There is another song in Nooraavadhu Naal , sung by SJ or SPS , I am not very sure - very spooky indeed ........
