I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!
VaniJayaram.com - A site that has lots of info and songs of VJ.

Those examples were instant and random, and far from complete...but, as they say, "Oru Paanai Sorukku Oru Arisi Padham." Or to get into animal-husbandry "You can take the horse to the water..."
However, although my missonary zeal might be more than apparent by now, I must admit I am not into the business of opening ears that are happy to remain closed. Wax is such a personal thing :-)
My personal perference of singers in TFM would look like this: VJ, PS, LRE, BSS and UR (who knows what marvels would have come our way had IR given her half the solos he sent the way of SPS, Jency and Chitra.) Among the male singers, I'd choose TMS, PBS, Jayachandran, Malaysia Vasudevan, TL Maharajan, and KJY. All in that order.
I don't get worked up about IR or his preferences anymore. I've moved beyond the pale of bafflement on this. The creator also has the prerogative to be the destroyer, and IR has cashed in on this duality often, much to my (and others) chagrin. I am just glad for the songs of his that I cherish, and they all seem to be from the late-70s and early 80s.
While I can't speak for others in this thread, I can say this much for myself with certainty: Sympathy has never-ever been a subliminal reason for my admiration or celebration of VJ. Her songs are testimony to her profound talent, and her voice and range have seldom been matched by those who came after. To fully understand why I say this, you might want to listen to the VJ-PJC duet "Mazhaikalamum Panikkalamum Sugamanavai." If that doesn't explain to you why I feel the way I feel, then I am afraid, nothing else will.
Thank you for your honesty, I am glad for this intelligent exchange.

For me,Listening to VJs songs, one part which stands out is her excellent pronunciation. The mellinams, idaiyinams, vallinams, the LAs &ZHAs seem to come so easy....amazing.Is she even better that PS & SJ in that respect?? (tho. theirs is pretty good too, considering that tamizh is not their mother tongue).

Naaz,
In my humble opinion, no one needs to justify that “so –n- so” is excellent or great. If I to use a strong word, “canvassing” is not needed for songsters like PS or VJ. In quite a few threads, PS was criticized as if she has to learn basics. Better to ignore all such immature comments as they are, am sure, out of ignorance.
So, lets continue enjoy the good music Naaz, Please.

Subbu -
Thank you for your post.
It is my good fortune that I spent a significant (and better, I should add) part of my early, formative years listening and learning from the words of Kannadasan, Vaali, Mu. Metha, Na.Kamarasan, La.Sa. Ramamirdham, Asokamitran, Jayakanthan, Anuththama, Kalki...My life would be a void without the music of Vish-Ram, MSV, Lalgudi,Kunakkudi, Maharajapuram Santhanam, MSS, Seergazhi, PS, VJ, TMS... Such fine teachers of language, music, culture and art.
Given that my own cultural/ancestral background is not tamizh - I feel privileged to have been nurtured and moulded by such pure, visionary, and inspiring writers, singers, musicians. It is something, if I could, I'd wish for others, and live through all over again, myself.
Orey Varththaiyil: Pokisham.
I couldn't conceive of "canvassing" for any of these stalwarts, giants, institutions. That would be presumptuous (not to mention arrogant) on my part. But you are right: It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. For that to happen, however, one has to be motivated to step out, walk to the store, buy the candle, light it - and be prepared to see what it might illumine.
Or darkness can become your closest friend.

I'd rather nobody mucked with these classics in celluloid adaptations. Almost always, these ventures do a disservice to literature.
Have you compared AMs "adaptation" of Henry James' "Portrait of a Lady" - "Chiththirap Paavai" ?
I never did see the film "Mogamul." Was it based on the novel too??

Yes, Naaz, Mohamul was 'based' on the classic story.
(but pray don't let OISG know that I told you this!- The hero was OISG's chella 'Bondha Kozhi':))

If my comp-lit reading serves me right, I believe AM was inspired by Henry James' Portrait of a Lady when he wrote Chiththirap Paavai (even the title seems like a close facsimile?). Did you think it was "inspired" in the "right" sense?
So I can go out an risk a Mogamul dvd/vhs rental then? :-)

"Metre" is the lifeline of poetry. To mine the "music" in the words (even without accompaniment) a true singer has to recognise the stress and release when pronouncing every syllable. If you are familiar with a capella then you will know what I mean.
VJ has this ability where she can make you see the moonu suzhis and the periya and chinna in every vowel and consonant - without losing rhythm, melody or nuance. This is an element of her style which is felt in every language she sings in.
Once, I remember, I did this exercise for my own benefit: I listened to the line endings of VJ songs. Every song, right down to the chinna "In", no matter what the scale, was fully realised and enunciated.
Neel D has uploaded Sagara Sangamame (from the telugu Alaigal Oiyvadhillai) at the website. This song has no accompaniment (not even a tambura). Give it a listen if you haven't already. 90 seconds, but what a lesson in tonal clarity, expression and formal excellence.

Well said, Naaz!
In fact it was VJ's clarity that brought home to me the beauty of the lyrics so many times- 'Maraithidum thirai thanai vilakki vaippayo, viLakki vaippayo' is just one such stunning instance. And wonder of wonders, she holds tight to this clarity even in difficult songs that had lines to be sung in high pitch and/or break-neck speed!
It wasn't Abishek Bachan who played the hero in Mohamul, but just plain Abishek (a Marathi, I believe)- he acted in some TV serials subsequently.
Chithirappavai was written by Akilan, I thought, not Asokamithran?

Naaz
"but what a lesson in tonal clarity, expression and formal excellence."
This one line describes VJ's eloquence and sincerity in her renditions perfectly. Telugu language, as part of the songs she sang, fluorished in her golden voice. It is a pity that it (and for that matter, Thamizh) is now in the hands (or voices?) of people who don't care for the beauty of the language, and even worse, these singers are surrounded by people who care less if La is pronounced as la or Zha is pronounced as la.

Akilan became Asokamitran...What the hell is happening to my grey cells!! :-) Keep those corrections coming!!
I meant Akilan all along, but Asokamitran took his place! (Vengayam, sorry for sending you on tizz.)
Yes, it was Akilan who was "inspired" by H.James.
Thanks for the reassurance - I was beginning to have second thoughts when the name "abhishek" was dropped in connection with "mogamul." Any in-depth, literary-context reviews of the film on the net??
Or should I just put it off 'til I see the film (trepedition-nnukku tamizh varththai unda?)
Illakanamum Illakiyamum - the Uyir and Mei of Language. Your prompt brings to mind:
"Adi Velli Thedi Unnai" - it is another example of minimal orchestration, and voice as instrument.
VJs sol-sandham bandham might be the result of the infinite "syllabic" rehearsals imposed by her musician mother. Bless her too :-)!
(Talking of this aspect - I have been searching unsuccessfully for the song "En Peyare Ennakku Marandhu Pona" from Oru Indhiya Kanavu." Could anyone here help me with a MP3/Link ref.? Senja, Unga Peyaril Oru Canadian Archchanai Nichchayam! :-)

Kaumudi -
Never mind the la's and zha's, I listened to a song from a recent film (maybe Sami, but not sure) and in this song, the new singer (Mahadi?) says -
"Haiyyo,Haiyyo"
Tell me, what sort of extra-linguistic expertise does one require to say "Aiyyo, Aiyyo"?
(It makes for a profound obit (inadvertently) for those who know the import of the word "Aiyyo" :-))
