only way to stop this is
All composers should record few tracks and donate it deva...and print clearly the following request...in the CD cover.
Dear Deva sir,
We have done 2 tracks for you to copy...please dont copy from other tracks...we all know you would be tempted to use them..because many directors request you to it....please do not use them..respect this kind request on behalf of all the musiscians of the world...
In future albums all of us will try to provide you more tracks to copy...We will also make arrangements to mail you the master DAT copy so that it will enable you to copy it easily and perfectly.
Thanks.
Happy copying (only the 2 reserved tracks Please)

I guess copying is needs talent too. Copy a song, true to its spirit and maintain the style sure isnt easy!

"I guess copying is needs talent too. Copy a song, true to its spirit and maintain the style sure isnt easy!"
I dont think so , using current technology...mordern samplers can reproduce a songs very easily., they also sync timing...and anything can be made to do anything, we can rip a bass part from a CD...and use it excatly in the song...the way you want...also I belive copying is unethical.
Cannot be justified at all, to kill someone large amount of metal ablity and physical ability is required, still it is a crime.
What Deva does is a crime period

"chekka chekka sivantha ponnu
naan singathaukku samainja ponnu..."
what a beautiful make-over of 'chappa, chappa..'
Gulzar will squirm if ever he chances upon this horror..
to keep up sustained copying at this level, and to have Balachander to Vasanth fawning over him, Deva is sure one blessed man.. if humility is the price for such success, well, you know why Ramar Pillai got copped..

Suresh,
there was a recent show by lakshman shruthi called 'deva 300' to honor deva's completion of 300 films. deva when asked to talk cribbed. he had earlier worked in DD. after he became 'famous'(notorious?)by scoring music for annamalai, it seems he walked into DD and no one paid any respect to him. people did'nt even bothr to recognise him.
it seems deva's name was left out in some posters in tanjore. so some poeple there asked him whether he was the one who really composed those songs for annamalai. citing all this, he said that he was happy that atleast LK had chosen to honor him. and then he bagn singing 'salomiyaa....' a straight lift from 'sayonee' in junoon album. i could'nt help but laught at the irony of the situation.

Suresh....:))) that was funny...
you must hear these guys speak about music! when you meet them, i have had few experience, once one guy explained me how to use a keyboard in a carnatic song :))), what is a carnatic song?
he tell me when a song has few semi classical bars, blindly it is called as carnatic song....
verbatim words :
Pallavi mela caressingA ore carantic theme placement supera venchuriukar annan.....
it is nothing a string sound (general midi 48 sound) playing just the notes of mohanam.
His was paid about rs1000 (1995) per hour for his services on keyboards. Producers stand in the line to book him, just for the reason he has tons of gadgets...which he knows to switch it on and off when MD requests him.
I am sure most of the dfmers here know better music than these jokers.

rajaG,
sure. i have sent a mail to bb reg. starting a page. i might give a few originals.i have also said that we can discuss with u and others on what intro to give in that page. i guess it has to be worded carefully since TFM admin should not run into any probs.
everyone can give their inputs. it would be decided whether the songs are a copy or not in the copied songs thread and then we decide that they are indeed copies they would be put into the copied songs site. what do u say?

Deva might be a commercially successful MD, but I guess he's already paying for it. Ask any person who his favorite MD is. You could be surprised if he/she says Deva. That he doesn't care about is a totally different issue :)

a couple of years ago, i happened to meet deva in a hotel room (quite accidentally) where he was engaged in a 'discussion'. at the time i met him, he was continuously humming and singing 'indha maan' from karagattakkaran (this was long after the movie came out, maybe 5/6 years). instinctively, my friend said 'pochuda, ithayum suttuttaan'. i was keenly looking forward to deva's makeover of this song, but till date have met with deep:( disappointment. some part in me refuses to accept that he could enjoy a song just for pleasure-sake, without a devious intention.
if you've seen the recent ajith hit 'mugavari', it's about an aspiring music director aiming to break into tinseltown. many a time in the movie, references to 'original music' 'creativity' etc. abound and you can't help but marvel at the thick-skin-ness with which deva has re-recorded for this movie. and true to his reputation, almost all the songs in the movie are blatant lifts, including a signature BGM humming piece of YSR (from Poovellam Kettuppar) that is incorporated in the song 'putham nootrande' (putham???). worse still, (srikanth, rajaG..you've got to see it) there's a sequence in which ajith forces his way to a director and explains how he'll compose for a critical sequence in his plot. he kinda says that he'll bring in everything from carnatic to hindustani to rock to explain the diff. emotions in the sequence, and the song is 'nilave' or something. it's not just that deva is cheating us, it's practically everyone associated incl. the director, lyricist... to say that maniratnam (producer) and vasanth (director) were ignorant of bob marley when deva composed 'akila akila' is absolute crap.
my point is when deva or whoever cop the blame, equal share must go to the other 'creatives' involved, because i'm more infuriated by their smugness and passing-off as geniuses or whatever when deva is being hauled over the coals from kumudam to TFM..

Suresh..something has to be done, this is not easy but still some good team work can move things...i had a chat with rajag this evening on this, we can atleast try to restrict them...
if we send them a big legal attorney notice...he will atleast keep away from copying for some period,
We should contact the record companies who hold the copy rights for the songs, but my fear is what if deva had obtained a written consent from them to use the tunes..., we are doomed....
but still we can try to write thru media...etc, Sun and other tv's have to cooperate..and tell public about it, we know that ananda Vikatan and other books writes about copying issues, but still nothing seems to happen
I heard a song from some new picture...sung by unni krishnan...blunt copy of yetho oru pattu...I thought MD was S.A.Rajkumar (who never seem to forget this song, it comes in all his movies in various formats), at the end it was Deva.
By any chance are you suresh chakaravarthi (someone told me he is coming to this page and contributing a lot, if so you can do a lot than us)
- From: suresh (@ dedicated-149.chn.vsnl.net.in)
on: Wed May 3 03:02:01 EDT 2000
nope, srikanth, i'm not suresh c, but suresh p(urushothaman).
to me, the quickest way to do this is put whatever concrete evidence we have on the web, and then get other media (magazines - vikatan etc., portals - ambalam.com..) to review or write about it. the ensuing publicity will create its own ripple effect, and start generating some awareness. the endpoint would be to have this as a periodical programme either on TV or FM that will
create a substantial public body of opinion against such unethical acts.
and, i bet that deva hasn't even thought about obtaining copyright consent. 'aathu thanniyile kai nanaikaradhukku yaara kaekkanum' kinda attitude, i guess. strengthened by the mute (sickening) and self-serving compliance by our 'greats' from Balachander to Bharathiraja...

Deva copying is old news, of course. But he does give people like us a good exercise, to identify tunes!
So does anyone know which is the original of Mugavari's 'Hey keechu kiliye'? I really like the song and I'm sure it is copied, cos it actually sounds good!
Moreover Deva has anyway copied the number 'that thing you do' by The Wonders from the OST of That thing you do, the movie (Tom Hanks debut as director), the same movie! Sounds terrible in tamil!
