  SPB's fans in Kerala are legion. They adore everything about him except for the fact that he has sung so little in Malayalam! No probs - I am told that hardcore SPB fans in Kerala conduct entire nights of pure-SPB antakshari. SPB and MSV have for years been planning a non-film-Malayalam album. Dunno when it will see the light of day.

  I too thought the same , as my many mallu friends chose KJY first, then SPB!, I guess they are vary patriotic about their state :), but then again KJY is one of the GREATTTTTTTTTTT legend :)

  Kerala and Keralites are uncompromising about standards and excellence and haven't the slightest sense of insecurity about their language, tradition and cultural forms. This is what allows them to enjoy the best wherever it is from. Years ago when I was doing a market survey I bumped into a project manager at a small pharma plant (under construction) in Kandivili, Bombay. Turns out this man is a Mallu a few years older than me – knowing me to be a Tamilian, he launched into an intense discussion of Sivaji’s old films with his greatest monologues from Parasakti to the all time classic Kattabomman (which he knew by heart). Sankarabharanam as many would know was the first genuine Silver Jubilee film in Kerala (it crossed 25 weeks not just 25 days!). yes KJY is popular and so is SPB.

  Shankaraparanam crossed 25 weeks in Kerala? cool :), as far as I know Shankaraparanam passed 365 days In Colombo and 260 days in Jaffna, which is amazing, given that the songs were amazingly sung by Dr.SPB, we Tamilians in SL can not understand a word of Telugu, yet the film ran for 1 year is a phenomenon!
  
  When the film released, in Colombo, I was a toddler, I have seen the film, 5 times, and I use to hum the tunes at the age of 3, my mother use to tell me. Yes, Dr.SPB has earned his first national award through this film, along with veteran MD, Mr.K.V.Mahadevan.
  
  Pennathur, would you know, where I can download or listen to some of SPB's mallu songs on line? I have heard enough of SPB in Tamil/Telugu/Karnadha/Hindi, but yet to hear SPB's mallu songs :(

  SPB has sung a few songs in Malayalam. Unfortunately I have heard only one of them aeons ago when Oliyum OLiyum was THE programme on Madras Tollaikatchi (must be in 1978). It is a quwwali type o song that surprised even our Palaghat neighbours! This is well before the Mohanlal-Mammootty era and the song featured some actors and actresses I have no idea of. I have contacted a few of my friends.

  sorry, I haven't listened to those myself. I remember years ago, friends of mine told me that the same movie was remade in telugu by the same director (rudhrayya) and the songs were done by SPB (Any telegu folks confirm this???).

  i was listening to vaigarayil song from PM..and once it ended immediately switched on Ennodu Paatu Padungal from UG...terrific contrast in the way SPB sings both, the mood swing is very obvious.
