Friends:
I was browsing the web. Got some interesting info.
Giving some excerpts from Anuradha Sriram's Interview:
You are basically a classical singer. Was it by coincidence that you became a playback singer?
Yes. I had not planned to become a playback singer. I was doing a Masters course in Ethnomusicology in the US, where I had to write a thesis. I chose ‘South Indian film music’ as my study material. There was not much documented data on South Indian film music, except for some published articles. This in spite the fact that film music is so popular. I was in awe of Illayaraja, who ruled the South film music for two decades and I took him up as my case study. For a music director to become the most important man in the production process of a movie is something great. So I took up Tamil music culture for my thesis, and named it ‘Illayaraja As A Phenomenon In Tamil Music Culture’. In the process, I also studied the various activities involved in the making of a movie. Also, I trained in opera and jazz, and did a course in voice culture under the guidance of Sherly Mayor. Then I decided to give film music a try, and approached AR Rahman. After a month, he offered me the song Malorodu, in the Tamil film Bombay.

Her research on Ilayarajas work in the films(?) could have been bait to fish chances. But it needs humanism to give an opputunity to expose ones talents and give a break, which she rightly got from ARR in Indra (Vidiyath Iravendru) and Deva in Kadal kottai (Manam ariya aaval).
By the way, has she completed the thesis in US or is it in the same level as Ilayarajas Symphony in UK?
The result could be only one thing as far as tamil film music is concerned. "MSV-TKR are the father of this type of music having done all the styles in their songs" with a less than half the number of movies that Ilyaraja worked for, amidst tough competitive work with contemporary music directors like KVM, SMS, SVV, CRS, GR, TRP etc..

Show some humanism in writing. FYI, Anuradha has sung in IR films. Many great singers were introduced by IR. If you need, I can give a big list. See the list of odd singers (crosses hundred)in other post given chances in IR movies. Knowing that IR is an inhuman (from past experiences or stories or whatever) she did her thesis on that topic. She looked for IR's music and not his personality.
It is not gentle to comment on sombody's personality. People may have different opinions about anybody.
Just being a computer science graduate does not mean you must offered a job in Motorola. You may get a job in Infosys. Life goes that way, right?

Fliflo:
FYI it is a fact that IR was dogmatic in using the same voices and failed to discover new native tamil voices as others do now! All his best hits are with the same voices.
He might have made new singers sing for unnoticed ?uppuma company films. But now, new MDs introduce new talents in big banners too.
Calling a person good doesnt mean that the other person is bad - as per donkeys logic.
Gentleman, dont get boiled up and pull in controversies for IR in all the forums. Be kind enough to give a list with the new singers introduced with the popular song of IR. IR is good. There are other 'very good' too. The world doesnt close down with one person.
Iam sure Anurathas thesis would have definitely adviced IR to stop singing in his own music, thereby creating an oppurtunity for those who are trained for it.(Just as Harmonium thottavanellam MD illai, Vaayai thoranthavanellaam paadagan illai). In your comparison, this is like SSLC failed person getting a CEO job in Motorola or Infosys.
By the way, apart from the publicity about the thesis, Is it published out already or "out" like sympony of kollywood Bach!

"new native tamil voices as others do now"
ROTFL !!
udit narayan
sadhana sargam
sukhwinder singh
asha bhosle
Make a laundry list of voices used by raja and others and raja's list will exceed any MD's list by a few yards.

Padathukku oruthannu. What happened to all these new talents. Irukkira idam theriyale. what is the point?
If these new voices are not introduced new MD's can't survive. Reason for their intro is for self-survival and not a care for these people.
Be kind enough to give a list with the new singers introduced with the popular song of IR.

I don't think you should include Asha in the list of Udit, Sukwinder and Sadhana. Asha's first song in tamil was at least 15 years ago.
Flifo
Minmini is a very good singer. She could have become another Janaki with some luck. And her first song was with IR in 'araNmanaik kiLi' (adi poongkuyilE poongkuyilE kELu). She did sing some very good songs in 'I Love India' also.

Fliflo,
Okay. IR introduced many new singers and gave good hits. You had asked
>> What happened to "Minmini" "Rafee" "Suresh
>> Peters" "Prakash" "SAwetha" "Esther" "Sandhya" >> "Sonu Nigam", "Timmy" Febi,.......still more
Can I also ask
What happened to the "Yamunai Atrile" singer, Devi (who sang otha Ruba Tharen), Preethi and others you have mentioned. These people also sang a couple of songs and ippa irukkara idame theriyala.
P.S Lata was horrible with her pronounciation in the Engirindho Azhaikkum song. What a great song spoiled just like so many songs spoiled by Sadhana Naragam :)

I agree. There is no choice. Everybody can not be SPB or SJanaki or KJYesudas. Before hariharan SPB was so popular and MD's needed to use him so often. I remember, in movie Idayathai Thirudathe, telegu version (Geetanjali) was sung by SPB and Tamil version by Mano. People started making noises asking why didn't Ilayaraja use SPB in tamil. When Mano could not be accepted in place of SPB how about others? That's one reason why he has sung more than 30,000 songs. Now people are bored with SPB songs and the same group of people are asking for new voices. Now songs are composed with new sounds and new voices. To quote some

Is this the way to give chances to new people. For each kind of voice use one kind of sound and person. This is basic survival for present day MDs. If not, he will be out of market..
