When we say other languages, let us not miss the obvious - Malayalam. I know KJY has accounted for a majority of the songs in Malayalam. But can some one summarize/list out some of the 'legends' of his Malayalam singing career. When did he start, who was the main male lead singer before him, unique experiences/achievements, etc.

KJY has carved a special niche in Telugu film world. He may not have done as many songs as the great Ghantasala or the evergreen SPB. But all his Telugu contributions are gems of a kind. If I remember right his first Telugu song, "Preminchuta pillala vanthu", was from the mid 60's film "Manchi Kutumbam", with Janaki, it was a song of college students' play with many tones and scenes. The Telugu film music lovers remember his soothing, mellodious and highly emotional songs of "Megha SanDesham". Especially, "Aakaasha Deshaana" that earned him a national award. The famous hero of masses, Mohan Babu is a huge fan of KJY and every film of this hero has at least one song by KJY. KJY is loved by, as it is said in Telugu, AABAALA GOOPAALAM, when translated, by all generations. Indeed.

KJY sang the song 'aaj bujithE paarinaa, jeebOnEr maanEy kichu....' in Bengali under the direction of, you guessed it, Salil Chaudhuri. However, his Malayalam (South Indian??) accent and more so, intonation, was quite strong in that song and he did not make any headway into the Bengali music market. I am sure that there is a Malayalam equivalent for this song, but I do not know what it is. BTW, this song was recorded soon after his success in Hindi with CHoti si baath and Chitchor.

rajaG,
Years ago, May be in 1990, in Chennai TV's Malarum Ninaivugal (Deepawali Special)Yesudas mentioned that he sang the Bengali song (same tune as the Chemmeen song by Mannadey 'maanasa mayile varu') for Kamalahasan.
Is that the same song you have mentioned?
Thanks
Thenraja

Thenraja, funnily enough , the Malayalam version of the song was sung by Manna Dey , a Bengali and the Bengali version, by KJY.
Mani, the first song Telugu song of KJY is "Nindu Chanda Mama" composed by SP Kothandapani.

Yesterday I was listening to a Thomsun cassette (Greatest hits of KJY) featuring some excellent Hindi songs...gOri thera (or, is it gOri pera..I'm very weak in catching these Hindi words), which I think is his first HFM song, is one of them and really great... BTW, who's the MD for this song?

eden:
"Gori tera pyaar..." from CHITCHOR is KJY's first "super hit", but not the first song. The first Hindi song recorded was "Ni sa ga ma...." from ANAND MAHAL - the album was released in 1977, but the movie was never released (according to a posting on another thread). "Jaane man jaane man..." from CHOTTI SI BAAT is considered by many (myself included) as KJY's first real Hindi song - movie and album were released in 1975. ANAND MAHAL album had 5 songs, all by KJY, one being a duet with Sabita Chowdhry (I would pay anything to get a copy of this album:-))))
BTW, MD for ANAND MAHAL and CHOTTI SI BAAT was Salilda and for CHITCHOR, it was Ravindra Jain.

Sriram,
Isn't 'Nindu Chandha Maamaa' the one which sounds like it is an inspiration from 'kHoyaa kHoyaa chand' - Ref. Paduthaa theeyagaa, SPB.

Ironically, it was the less-known music director than the superstars who was responsible for Dasettan making a mark in Hindi territory. Ravindra Jain, Rajkamal (Saawan ko Aane Do) and Bappi Lahiri all made great use of Dasettan's golden voice for some unforgettable songs. HMV has published two 2-cassette anthologies of his best songs and both are worth their weight in gold.

Have been unsuccessfully looking for a particular hindi film song of Yesudas and his non-film album with semi-classical hindi numbers for some time.
The song (sorry...am not even sure of the starting words...i guess its "maalik there..") is from the movie "aakri ghulam" starring mithun chakravarthy and the song has been picturised on saeed jaffrey.Have searched for the audio cassette of the movie in many places but did not get the same. Does anyone have that song ?
The album....no information what so ever..I just know that there is one which came out in the late 70s or early 80s and have heard a song from that many years back.Anyone has any information on this album ?

I have "Maalik tere...." in my collection, but can't remember where I got it from. Until now, I thought the song was from PAATAAL BHAIRAVI. Can you give me some clues about the semi-classical album?

In Hindi, he has some excellent numbers :
"Ni Sa Ga Ma Pa Ni.. Aa Aare Mitva" (Anand Mahal)
"Kaa Karun Sajni" and "Koi Gaata Main So jaata" (Film: Aalap... starring Amitabh, this song is a great hit of KJY)
"Jab Deep Jale Aana" with Hemalata(Chitchor)
"Gori Tera Gao Bada Pyaara" (Chitchor)
"Tu Jo Mere Sur Mein Sur Mila Le"(Chitchor)
"Kahan Se Aaye Badra" (Chashme Baddoor).. a big classical hit
"Madhuban Khushboo Deta Hai" (?)
"Sunaina" (Sunaina)
"Dil Ke Tukde" (music by Bappi Lahiri)
"Tere Bin Soona Moray Man Ka Mandir" (Himalay Ke Goad Mein?).. one of my favorites.
In fact HMV has come up with an album called Golden Collection that must have most of these numbers.

KJY's classical music based songs for the Kannada movie 'Malayamarudha' are noteworthy - especially the duet 'Malayamarudha ghana' (in Raga Malayamarudham) with S Janaki and 'SaradhE, Daya Thuridhe' are real melodies
