Which is your favourite Raaga and why??????

Hi All,

I dont know anything about carnatic music but from various articles in the internet i could know which song was based oin which raaga.I found that 75% of my fav songs are based on "MOHANAM".For example geetham sangeetham,ninnukori varnam,nilavu thoongum neram,kanmaniye kathal enbathu,idhayam oru kovil etc etc...are all my top fav's..
So can everybody tell which raaga is their favourite and quote some songs...

  My favourite is Hamsanadham - Sorgame endralum, Thendral vandhu ennai thodum, Isayil thodanguthamma, etc. Also, Guna BGM. This raga sounds very divine and I get goose pimples every time I hear to these songs.

  one more fine number to add on to "hamsanaadham" is the malayalam one sung by Sujatha 'Minnaaram maaraththu' from Guru. It is a clear mood elevator.

  My another favourite raga is Reethigowlai - Chinna Kannan Azhaikkiran, Raman Kadhai KeLungaL (prelude), Meetadha Oru Veenai and ARR's Azhagana Ratchasiye. This is a very melodious raga and very easily identifiable. Any other IR songs are there in this raga?

  i remember as somewhere i read the song thalayai kuniyum thaamarayae is set to rethigowla raaga.

  I think Agaya Vennilave is also Darbari Kaanada, but the song is set to some unconventional Talam. Pls clarify.

  agaya vennila ia also set in darbari kanada (don't know about the talam bit). an old sivaji song - sinnanchiriya vannapparavai - which is an excellent use for this ragam. i think mullai malar mele and muthukkalo kangal are also set to the same.
  personally, the best film song in this ragam is a malayam film song from sallapam which goes "ponnil kulichchu ninnu chandrikavasantham". check it out, guys, it will blow ur mind.
  
  my favs are shanmugapriya, reethigowlai and the kaalai ragams (bouli, malaya marutham, rasika ranjani, boopalam).

  Shanmugapriya is a fast paced raga..am i right???Is "namthana namthana" based on Shanmugapriya??

  - raga same as
  'muthukkalo kangal, thithipado kannam'...
  - maybe i way apart wrong?

  1) Kadhal Kasukkudayya - Aan Paavam
  2) Sollayo Vaay Thirandhu - Mogha MuL
  3) Malayalam song - Confusion keerthaname from Summer in Bethlehem (MD Vidyasagar)
  I dont think it is a fast paced ragam.

  it's confusion theerkaname, not keerthaname :-))). great fun song. thamthana thamthana is in shanmugapriya, as far as i know.
  
  btw, is "aagaya gangai" from dharmayudham in sri? need clarification on this.
  
  regards shanmugapriya being fast-paced or not, i don't think any ragam is fast-paced by itself. it's only how the composer handles it.
  kalyani, for instance. janani janani and vanthal mahalakshmiye are both in kalyani, but there is a perceptible difference.

  Venkatesh and CRAM,
  
  Both "UnnAl Mudiyum Thambi" and "RAghavanE" are set to Sudha Danyasi (ANother example is: "Vizhiyil Vizhundu"). The reason they are mistaken for HindOlam is that they create Sruti Bhedam.
  
  Let me try to explain:
  
  The following Ragas, Mohanam, Madhyamavati, HindOLam, Shuddha Saveri and Shuddha Danyasi have 5 notes each in ArOhanam and AvarOhanam. And the difference in frequency between 2 swaras is the same in all these ragas. They yield one another in that order by a shift of one note. Here's how:
  
  Mohanam has the following Notes:
  Sa Ri2 Ga3 Pa Dha2 Sa (e.g. 'POOvil VaNdu Koodum')
  
  Now, when you keep Ri2 of Mohanam as the starting point, 'Sa', it will yield raga Madhyamavati.
  (e.g: 'ThuLLi ThuLLi Nee PAdammA')
  
  When Ga3 of Mohanam is set as Sa, it yields HindOLam. (e.g. 'NAn ThEdum Sevvanthi Poovidhu')
  
  When Pa of MOhanam is set as Sa, it yields 'Shuddha SAveri'. (e.g. 'KAdhal Mayakkam')
  
  When Dha2 of Mohanam is set as Sa, it yields 'Shuddha Danyasi'. (e.g. 'Vizhiyil Vizhundu')
  
  
  After Dha2 , we go to at Sa, which takes us back to Mohanam.
  
  If you have a Harmonium or a Keyboard, you can see for yourself this amazing concept in Carnatic music by just playing every BLACK key in a sequence. Keep playing Mohanam for about a minute. You will have a reference point as 'Sa'. After a while, you shift your reference point to Ri. and keep playing one note after the other. You will get Madhyamavati. and then the other subsequent ragas. Try it.

  honestly, im not able to say which raaga is my favourite raaga. i liked both of those reethigowla songs.
  
  but in general i like Mohanam(ramyam, as raaga as well as many melodies based on that) and hindolam(same ramyam as well as songs like naan thaedum sevanndhi poovidhu)

  yes u r right..just this week i went to the archives section for the first time and found soo many beautiful threads in which music was discussed left and right by some old TFM page members(Sathyakeerthi,PG,cg,Kanchana,Udhaya,RV,NOV and many more)...where are they now???Are they just settled in read only mode???
