The tamil films produced nowadays do not have a good story, actors or anything that can improve the quality of tamil films except music. I could observe the films made in the West how much we are backwards in taking good films. Do you think that films are made only with only good music (which is not coherent with the film at all) and no story?
I think this trend was introduced by ManiRatnam. Balu Mahendra did give some good films which proved a success without music. What do you guys think? Does Music play a very major role in making a good film?

To cp,
Music plays a very important role in making a good film because it sets the mood for any particular scene. A good screen composer can bring a scene to life with a suitable background score. Even western movie directors like Steven Spielberg rely to a certain extent on good scores to bring out the life in a scene.
I have seen films without songs or with minimal music content but this are artistic movies, normally relating to real-life examples (non-commercial). Cinema is entertainment and a good entertainment 'package' in Tamil cinema has to have the elements that 'supplements' the masses's senses and emotions.

I agree music is essential, but not as important as the storyline. In the past, eventhough MSVR gave good music, besides other MDs, the storyline was excellent and movies were a big hit. Things changed and there has been a dearth of story nowadays and guys are relying on music. Producers/Directors like KB, Thevar, etc, did depend on music, yet had only given asthaana status to MDs and not more than that. If KB were to give hit movies, he would have stuck to Ilay!
Forget the ego stuff and that. What about Dir Visu? This dialog loader (horrible guy!!) has settled for abstemious music in his movies.
I can put the corollary now. there have been great songs from movies that could be called trash! Nandhavana Theru is one example! The songs were too good for the movie! And where is that Dir RVUdhaykumar? In fact, becos of Ilay some horrible movies not only sighted light, but made huge collections too. What about guys like Touser boy Ramarajan ? It was Ilay who lifted these guys!
So, music cannot always decide the fate of the movie. Its story predominantly thats required. I mean "required". There is a dir called V Sekar (right?) who made his impressions with stories only!I think he does only social themes! Ilay did music for his (one of)recent movie and ilay was not to be seen or heard in that movie (title : some naadu) No doubt our tamil audience never hesitates to see the movie thats released, thanks to music, today.

Nowadays (last 2 years) music doesnt seem
to play a big role. 'kadal kottai', 'nan pesaa..',
'kalamelam kadal va..' were hits in spite
of songs. The songs became popular
followed by the movie. The mass dosent
seem to bother about the music quality.
Just see the kind of intelude Deva uses
for the fine lyrics 'nalam nalam ariya..'.
Ullathai allitha had 80% copied songs.
Many so called comedy movies with
karthik and satyaraj etc has total junk
song. Even KB's movie's music is
no good.
Check out the top 10 songs
in suntv, you will cry. With less IR and
rehman, recent TFM has become
mediocre. What I use to complain about
hindi songs once upon a time, comparing them to raja's songs.

In today's Tamil cinema, music is being treated as a separate entity altogether. If you see older movies, the song is part of the story and blends together with the dialogue (you can see such an example in 'Guna' when the songs 'Kanmani Anboda Kathalan' and 'Unnai Naan Ariven' are heard. These songs run concurrently with the dialogue). I wish to cite a clear example of my opinion above by referring to Kunjumon's 'Gentleman' when suddenly, out of the blue, Prabhu Deva comes into a scene with his 'korangaatam' which is completely unrelated in any way whatsoever to the movie's storyline. The way I see it, songs today are being made more like western music videos -- with a lot of songs made to depict dream scenes. With the number of low-budget movies hitting the markets today, songs are given minimal importance. As long as there are some song-dance sequences, it is sufficient to be displayed to the masses.

Yes Guru, thats what i forgot to mention. Dirs flock the MDs well in advance and get "super songs" from the MDs. Then picturize the songs in due course. What about the dream songs ? They are from the thin air and got nothing to do with the movie theme! MDs are commercial products now and getting the songs from the most popular MD matters a lot nowadays! Its like getting the Hero, Heroine 's appointment. For instance, Ilay did PattuVathiyar for TPGajendran when Ilay was doing well commercially. The movie was released after a long long time when Ilay was down and out. If you look from the prod/dir point of view songs are yet another "movie promotion formula/ingredient". I understand Ilay did Avathaaram after the movie was shot completely. It seems he was impressed with the story that he asked Naazer to come back after shooting. This kind of approach definitely adds pep to the movie.
