Off late, K S Chitra has become one of my hot favourites amongst female singers. Her voice has a unique and rich timbre which I really enjoy. lets take this opportunity to discuss songs by her in Tamil and various other languages - Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu. Her songs sung under the tutelage of Ilayaraja, AR Rehman, Ravindran et al are really excellent, moreover she has a delightful classical touch as is seen in her rendition of "alaipayuthe" and the Sindhubhairavi songs. She has done a great deal of Hindu and Christian devotional albums in Southern languages...lets discuss those. My favourite Chitra song so far remains "gopika vasantham" and her duet with SPB in the Telugu
movie Swathikiranam. What a voice and that sharpness!
So please, lets discuss her songs!! :-)
(If this topic has been discussed in full detail - similar to the Vani Jairam thread - please post a link to it). Otherwise lets make this an encyclopedia of KSC songs.

A good endeavor, AVR.
I'm also a fan of KSC. She has a beautiful sweet voice. She is always considered a junior to greats like PS and SJ. I feel she has a high unique place in TFM, perhaps equalling those greats.
My current favorite is "Engey enadhu kavidhai" from KKKK. Incidentally, Gopika vasandham was my favorite a few days back:) I listened to it so many times that I've got a little bored of it. Its time I got back to it, thanks for reminding.

Chitra has several good songs to her credit in Telugu. She has rendered some of the very good duets with SPB. Some of them that come to my mind rightaway are:
Duets (almost all listed w/ SPB): Abbanee tiyyani (Jagadekaveerudu Athilokasundari)
Anjali anjali (Duet, of course, she is inimitable in this song IMO)
Bhaddaragiri ramayya & Poosindi (Seetharamayyagari manavaralu)...the 1st one is based on the thyagaraja krithi "sadhinchene"
Eenadae edo ayyindi & Ivvu ivvu(Prema, IR's music...during his busy days in telugu...the 1st song is based on hamsadhwani)
Ammaayi muddu ivvande (Kshanakshanam)
Praanamae praanamae (Tenali...this is the telugu version of swaasamae... excellent rendition by both SPB and chitra)
Chinukulai & Hailesso hailessa (Subhasankalpam..kamal's movie)
Oura ammakachellaa (Apathbaandhavudu)
Abba roopamentha (Asoka chakravarthy...IR)
Chalti ka naam gaadi (Chettu kinda pleedaru...IR)
Entha entha dooram (Nirnayam...IR)
Jaajimalli & Telusuko telusuko (Chinnabbayi...IR..I remember someone mentioning that the 1st song is based on Gowrimanohari ragam)
Nelaraaja terateeyaraa (Surya IPS...IR)
Koththa koththagaa (Kooli number one...IR)
Lalitha priya kamalam (w/ KJY in Rudraveena...IR...excellent song based on lalitha ragam)
Nee andam naa prema (Vaarasudoccadu ...IR)
O priya priya....(Geethanjali)
All the songs in "Swathikiranam" are a delight to listen to.
Solos: Maa perati (Pellisandadi)
Jallantha kavvintha (Geethanjali..IR)
Raadae cheli (Mr.Pellam)
Chukkallaaraa (Aapathbaandhavudu...lovely song)
Vennello & Asalem gurthukuraadu (Anthahpuram...IR's re-entry movie in telugu after a long gap)
These are just some of her songsn as I mentioned earlier. What I admire about her is that her diction and accent in telugu are just beyond comparison and unquestionable. She improved it over the years with sheer hard work. No one listening to her telugu numbers would believe she is a non-telugu. She definitely stands above the rest of the singers of this generation when it comes to good enunciation and good singing.

Idhazil kadhai ezhuthum song from Unnal Mudiyum Thambi is an excellent song :-)) A great song indeed; royally killed by chithrA (pronunciation). I used to think this was well performed until I started learning thamizh. There are much better songs - punnakai mannan to quote. imnvho, she was great in the beginning but started goind down from the early 90's. Of course, she has some great song to her credit during this period too.
Before the chithrA Army commanded by aruvi [:-)] start attacking me: Whenever I play some of my favorite chitrA songs to my non-Indian friends, they always say that her voice is angelic!

s0: i had to hunt for this song on net and finally found at vAnavil. (the last i listened to this song was many months ago.) i take back my kuRRanjcATTal. she did not royally kill the song with mispronunciations. she sounds confused about L and l (virundhukaL is an egregious one); also her "s"-s (instead of the "cha" as in "sonnadhu" instead of "chonnadhu") sound more offensive than SPB. anyways, i was (at least partially) wrong.

On Musicindiaonline.com they have put up some good Carnatic pieces by KSC under Carnatic Vocal section...I havent got enough of them..."krishna nee begane" and "alaipayuthe" and "kalyana gopalam" and so many more. What a voice!
Recently she sang for an album called "Piya basanti" with Ustaad Sultan Khan.
I personally do feel that KSC does share a place amongst the greats like PS,SJ,VJ.

Kaumadi:
Yes, the SPB-KSC duet in Swathikiranam was great. KSC also sang a duet with Vani in that movie - "shruti neevu gati neevu bharati" which was also lovely.
In Malayalam, she has sung lots for Ravindran, hasnt she? I really love this particular composer's songs.
I also remember a classical song by KSC sung under DEVA in a Malayalam movie called PRINCE. I am sure it is one of his better works.

It was a great achivement by KSC that she got 5 times "Best play back singer" at National level, within short span of 10 years. (Sindhu Bairavi, Nagakshthangal (Mal), Minsara Kanavu, Vaishali (Mal) & one more film (???).
VJ got only 3 times, SJ got 4 times..
Even PS also got 5 times but it was within 20 years. May be they started giving for female artist by 1969 only.

Chitra is acompetent singer. The trouble is that she came at atime when PS was slowly going towars retirement, VJ was not utilised that much & SJ was still given only husky nos by the man who mattered IR. In this scenario she burst into the scene & hey presto became NO 1 singer in no time., won national awards quite at the start of the career. And since then she has not gone on to the next stage which she should have. She seems content with being competent without being excellent. It is disappointing but true.

She has a very unique voice..And it suits very well for a teenage girl..IMHO..
I like "Raavil nila kaavil"
"Kannadi kudum kooti"
"kunjumani cheppu thuranthu"
"Manjal prasadamum"
"Thamara kannan urangenam"
and a lot more tamil songs..

I personally think that national awards should not necessarily be an indication of talent. I do think that sometimes these national awards are wasted on even good singers. Like in KSC's case, I still can't comprehend why a national award is needed for the Minsaara kanavu song and even the Virasat song. Chitra sang many numbers like that in all the south indian languages. I'm sure she missed a couple more national awards for other underrecognized gems.
I expected Kavitha Krishnamurthy to bag a national award for "Bhairavi" (Hindi) which boasts of very good renditions by her. I don't think she was awarded any.
Similarly, SJ has also, I think, missed national awards in a couple of instances. I heard/read somewhere that she sang a Kannada song under the music direction of L.Subramanian (or is it L.Vaidyanathan??) where the lines of the song alternate between two different ragas. Now, that is a feat and deserves a national award. She never got one for that!!
Yet, there is always some distinction associated with the national awards!!

I agree Kamudi. Virasat and MK werent really NA stuff, esp coz KSC has sung so many challenging songs in the South.

Does the "she" refer to KSC or SJ here? :-)
