KAAKHA KAAKHA goes Hollywood

The super hit film with extraordinary music, Kaakha Kaakha, is seeing its way to Tollywood (Telugu), Bollywood (Hindi) and ALSO Hollywood. The film is going to be produced by the same producer Kalaipuli S Thanu and also to be directed by Gowtham Menon. Gowtham is supposed to be directing the Telugu (Venkatesh, Sonlai Bendre) and Hindi (Fardeen Khan, Priety Zinta) version also. The music in Telugu is by Harris Jayaraj, but the music in Hindi is said to be Sandeep Chowtha. Will Harris Jayaraj score the music in the international version too ??

  Kaakkha Kaakkha goes to Hollywood
  Kaakkha Kaakkha, the blockbuster of 2003 is going to Hollywood. Tentatively titled Guarding On, the Hollywood version will be based on a Russian cop who specializes in encounters. And it’s taking director Gautham Menon and producer S. Thanu with it. They have started the company Malibu Tigers, which would produce the movie. When the duo approached the Hollywood producers for its remake in English, four of them – one of them being Ryan Johnson (executive producer of The Score starring Edward Norton and Robert de Nero) – liked the movie and asked them to get the script ready. Thanu and the American producers will be jointly producing this.

  The hot shot actor Prabhas, after the runaway hit 'Varsham' pairs up with the hot shot director of 'Khakka Khakka', Goutam.
  
  The film is to be produced under the banner of venkatewara cine entertainments by Raj Varma. As luck would have it, the production company was able to rope in the most happening director of Tamil film industry for their forthcoming project.
  
  Now, when you book the best in the business, Harris Jeyaraj cannot be far behind the best. So, naturally he will direct the music for this yet to be titled flick which will start shooting formalities from 12th of April.
  
  The producer was elated at the prize scalps made and had this to say, "The shooting will start from 12th of April and the regular schedule from somewhere in July. We hope to finish the movie well before for a grand release. Don't worry you will start hearing about this movie, in flashes, I can promise you that much.

  CHENNAI: The Tamil film industry’s romance with the men in khaki continues... after Suriya stole hearts as Anbu Selvan in Kaakha Kaakha, it is now the turn of Sarathkumar with ‘Gambeeram’.
  
  The actor called a press conference on Tuesday at Le Royal Meridien, that ostensibly was to launch the audio cassette of the film, but his conversation flowed freely from his forthcoming releases to his political affiliations to his four-month pregnant wife, Radhika.
  
  Enjoying an enviable bonhomie with the journalists and often referring to them by name, former Mr Madras and the city’s own Sylvester Stallone had the press eating out of his hand. And for a change, there was no bashfulness, he mentioned everything that he was doing, gave anecdotes, passing thoughts on life, the Tamil film industry and even the baby he and his wife are expecting in July. ‘‘Maybe it will be born on the same day as me, July 14,’’ he said, looking dashingly movie-starish, still sporting his Gambeeram look.
  
  He said, ‘‘Surya did really well as a police officer in Kaakha Kaakha but this is a different subject.’’ He went on to praise everyone in the film from cameraman to the villain. ‘‘There is a lot of importance given to the physical appearance, because this is a film to motivate the youth,’’ he added. So be prepared to get a good look at his muscular chest.
  
  He said that although everyone had done a good job with the film, as Mahesh Bhatt once told him, ‘‘We can postpone failures but a hit is a fluke.’’ Something he said he agreed wholeheartedly with. ‘‘It all depends on the taste of the audience at that time.’’
  
  Besides his Tamil films, you may also see Sarathkumar wielding a lathi at some Bollywood hero. He said he would probably do a character role in a Hindi film this year. ‘‘Prakash Jha (Gangajal) told me I look like a Bihari cop.’’ The actor said he was open to doing films in any language, be they English, Malayalam or Hindi. ‘‘You just have to have the time to do these,’’ he said.
  
  
  Kaakha Kaakha in Hollywood

  Kaakha Kaakha, that slickly made ‘encounter-cop’ story now finds its way to Hollywood. The producer-director team of Thanu-Gautham had met some Hollywood producers like Ryan Johnson on their trip to Los Angeles.
  
  The producers had expressed their interest in the film and asked them to get a script ready for the film’s remake in English. If all goes well, then the Indo-Hollywood venture tentatively titled Guarding On, with Gautham wielding the megaphone, may well turn into a reality mid-2005.

  A recent mega hit film in Tamil is now going to be remade in Hollywood. Surya and Jyohtika had starred in the film 'Kaaka Kaaka' that was directed by Goutham and produced by Dhanu. So realistic was Surya's performance and the characterization that senior police officials had called him up and praised him.
  
  
  Dhanu is gearing up to join with a Hollywood based film production company and remake the film in English. Malibu Tigers is the name of the company that is going to produce the film. The film has been named 'Gaurding On'. Auditions are on to select actors and actresses and technicians for the film.
  
  
  The film is set in the backdrop of Russia. This is the first film in Tamil to be remade in Hollywood.

  Venkatesh in KK remake
  
  
  The muhurt of Venkatesh's latest film a remake of Tamil blockbuster Kaakkha Kaakha was held in Hyderabad. Venkatesh is playing a cop who specializes in encounters. Asin is playing a teacher. Most of the people who worked for Kaakkha Kaakkha are going to work for Telugu version as well. Dr. D Rama Naidu gave the clap and DVS Raju switched on the camera. Venkatesh did not attend the muhurath since he is abroad for song shooting of Malliswary. The film deals about a clash between a cop and a gangster. Jeevan - who played villain in KK is doing the same role in Telugu version as well. Geeta Chitra International that produced films like Pavitra Bandham and Pelli Chesukundam is producing this film. S Thanu - who producer the original KK is one of the three producers of the film. Harris Jayaraj provides music. Goutham - who directed the original - directs this film.
  
  This film would go to floors from the 1st week of February. And is expected to release in the first week of May 2004.Other credits are Brinda choreographs, Peter Haynes looks after stunts and RD.Raj Shekar handles camera. C Venkata Raju, G Siva Raju are the other producers.

  Vinayan to remake KK?
  
  
  Director Vinayan who is busy finishing Vellinakshtram with Prithiviraj in the lead is likely to remake Kakkha Kakkha the Tamil film in Malayalam. He has sounded out Prithiviraj for Surya's role. Heroine is not selected yet. Yet another film with Jaisurya is on the cards in which the hero is a cobbler working in front of a women’s college. KK is already in Telugu by the same team with Venkatesh in the lead. Feroz Khan acquired the Hindi rights where his son Fardeen is acting.

  A Long time pending project for Venkataraju and shivaraju’s film, Venky had taken advance long back after pelli cheskuntham. So venky decided to do a film for them.
  Gunashekar was fixed as director while doing the film Okkadu, Once he finished the project he prepared the story for Venky, After initial story discussion sureshbabu and enkatesh told corrections as usual so Guna made all the corrections and narrated the story, This was repeated six times. After the sixth time Guna got bugged and informed that he cannot do the film with venky and agreed to do another film with the producer and left the project. And he became busy with Arjun. When producers informed this to suresh, suresh at that point of time called back Guna and informed him that they will l accept the subject as per his last version, but Guna informed that he is busy with Arjun, meanwhile EVV’s Tottigang released and got well good openings.
  
  
  So Suresh thought EVV would be good choice so they announced EVV.. Story was ready music director was given advance, one crore set was being done Ramanaidu studio, In this subject they want to shoot 20days in Thailand, (according to the story Venky is the boatsman, so they want to shoot near to the pukat island), Suresh reconfirmed the film and waited for the result of Adante Ado Type and that film is bombed at box-office. So without the producers knowledge he removed the EVV, They called EVV and informed that to him. EVV is upset but kept quite on this. The news is broken to the producers through the financier, shocked producers approached the Suresh and Suresh asked them to wait.
  
  
  GVG Raju approached for the Tamil rights of Kakkakka to make it with Venkatesh. Venky and Suresh are impressed with the subject and Suresh approached the tamil producers with out GVG for the rights of the film. This is a shock to GVG, he informed this to Venky who is a close friend of him. So he compromised that the film will be done in a partnership. The deal will be Suresh will produce the film jointly, 50 percent will be suresh and remaining will be GVG and tamil producer and the distribution rights will be suresh with a ten percent commission. GVG opted out after much caliculation.
  
  
  Meanwhile the Venkararaju and Shivaraju asked by some in the production council to approach them, but they are in the not willing to approach they spend 1.5 crores (one crore on the Set and 50 lakhs on Music and story discussions), hearing this Suresh went immediately and offered the Kakkakakka rights to them with the same conditions. This will save a lot to Suresh, (one he need has to invest anything on the film, Two one crore set in Studio can be used, three he gets the ten percent commission on distribution, escaping from the bad name)
  
  
  SivaRaju and VenkatRaju accepted the praposal, for the film Venky asked parachuri bros to work for half rate, but they refused. So they roped other writers for lesser cost. Whatever has said and done the producer is the ultimate sufferer in this whole industry. We hope the film run and he gets his money back. We wish them the success.

  Now, Hollywood will remake an Indian film!

  Kaakha Kaakha, one of the most talked about and successful Tamil films in recent times, was Gautam Menon's second film. It was the first ever film made on an encounter specialist; much before the deluge started on Indian screens.
  
  Apparently, when Kaakha Kaakha hit the screens, Mumbai filmmaker Feroz Khan bought the rights to the film and asked Gautam Menon to direct it in Hindi. Then came an offer to remake the film in Telugu.
  
  The latest is an offer to make the film in English in Hollywood! While the screenplay of the English version is being prepared in Los Angeles, Gautam Menon has completed the Telugu version of Kaakha Kaakha and is working on a romantic film in Tamil.
  
  His first venture, Minnalae, was a big hit at the box office, though it bombed when it was remade in Hindi (with Madhavan and Dia Mirza).
  
  In an exclusive interview with Shobha Warrier, Menon talks about the Hollywood offer and why he is not so excited:
  
  The news is that your highly successful Kaakha Kaakha is going to be made into a Hollywood film. From Tamil to Telugu to now English, how did all this happen?
  
  After we made Kaakha Kaakha in Tamil, my producer [Kalaipuli S] Thanu was keen to see it made in English. He kept telling me we must meet people in Hollywood. I was not so keen because my career is just starting here. I have made only two films so far, so I thought I should establish myself here first.
  
  But Thanu was persistent. He hired a consultant, Mohan Narayan, who knew some people in Hollywood and arranged a meeting for us with some Hollywood producers. So the three of us went to LA some time in mid-2003, and met screen brokers Andy and Bonnie Sanders, who in turn took us to four-five producers. They were not A-list producers, but independent filmmakers. We had four-five meetings. At each meeting, we had to show the DVD of the film, present our profiles, and talk about our film and India. They were quite impressed with whatever we had shown them.
  
  Frankly, I was not too keen, but their response to my work made me sit up. They were extremely appreciative of the film and my capacity as a filmmaker and Thanu's role as the producer.
  
  You showed the clippings of your film to the producers. How aware were they of Tamil films?
  
  They didn't know anything about Tamil films. They knew 'Bollywood'. We had to tell them we were from south India and our film was made in one of the south Indian languages. They were surprised to know that the Tamil film industry is as big as the Hindi film industry. They only knew Mira Nair [Salaam! Bombay, Monsoon Wedding] and Shekhar Kapur [Bandit Queen, Elizabeth, Four Feathers].
  
  I showed them clippings from Kaakha Kaakha and Thanu showed them a clipping of Aalavandhan [Thanu produced the film for Kamal Haasan. Hindi viewers know the film as Abhay]. They were surprised to see the quality of the films made here [in the Tamil film industry].
  
  Who will produce the film in English?
  
  Thanu told them he would partially support the production and asked them whether they were willing to tie up with him. All four of them agreed to produce the film.
  
  Are you writing the screenplay of the English version too?
  
  No. I am not familiar with the living environment there. I can write a film based here. I gave them the sketch and they have already started writing the screenplay. I am putting it on hold as I am doing a couple of films here. They have been pestering me to go there and start working on the film. I can do that only next year. By then, I will finish my commitments here.
  
  Anyone in your place would have given preference to a Hollywood production.
  
  It is a big break, I agree, but I have to understand the way they work, and they work differently. I am quite comfortable here. There, they plan for the film for almost eight months and then they shoot for another eight months. The script has to be very correct. It can't be done the way it is done here. Once the script is ready, I will start planning, which will probably be by next year.
  
  Is it true that the story is going to be about a Russian commando fighting Chechen rebels?
  
  We thought of a couple of options, and finally zeroed in on a Russian cop and Chechen rebels. It could change — we have not confirmed it yet.
  
  How excited are you about your first Hollywood film?
  
  It is pretty exciting. Meeting all those people, finding out their thoughts are all very exciting. I never had any Hollywood ambitions, especially at this stage of my career. I am just following the career paths of Ram Gopal Varma, Mani Ratnam and Priyadarsan, and modelling my career after them. I want to make films here first, and then maybe go there.
  
  I got a little confident only because of their response to my film. Even so, I think I should establish myself here first. If I were a big director here, my making a film in Hollywood would have created a lot of buzz over here.
  
  What exactly do you think might have impressed the producers in Hollywood?
  
  They said it was a stylishly made film. They even told me it was as good as a film released there. I told them I worked on a very tight budget and would have made a bigger film if I had more money.
  
  If you see the Telugu version, you will be surprised. I had more money to spend, so I have made a slicker and better version. See the irony. The same producer is willing to spend more money now, not only for the Telugu version but for the English version as well.
  
  Didn't he have confidence in you when you were making Kaakha Kaakha?
  
  No, no. He didn't have that much money when we were making the Tamil original.
  
  What about the Hindi version which you were to make for Feroz Khan?
  
  I backed out of that because I don't want to do the same thing all over again. One of my associates might direct the film.
  
  Would you feel fresh when you make the same film for the third time in English?
  
  That will be totally different. The screenplay is different, the settings are different. Only the basic structure will be the same.
  
  Have you started thinking about the Hollywood project?
  
  Not exactly. I think of the project only when I open my mailbox as they keep updating me on the screenplay. Otherwise, my mind is on the projects I am doing here. I have just finished the Telugu version of Kaakha Kaakha, to which I have made a few structural changes. Then, I am making a love story, Chennayil Oru Mazhakalam.
