Other day i rented the movie Niram Maratha Pookkal and saw it. My wife had not seen it. Ever since she finished watching, she has been listening to the song "Aayiram Malargale" non stop. She keeps replaying the song over and over and over.... Composed some 24 years back.. This is where IR stands out from the rest. Unforgettable tunes...

I listened to the song " Uravenum Thodarkathai" from "Nenjathai Killathe".(I think so) after a long time. I do not know how many times I have listened to the song again.
What a wonderful , unparralled composer is Raja!
When will the younger generation ever realize the
greatness of this composer!

The simple reasons for persistence of IR songs (majority) in our mind is ---- tunes and lyrics are inseparable; if you hum lyrics will come to your mind; in other words if you started reading the lyrics the tune will certainly enter your mind. In this fashion only real songs are making survival-- from the past to the present. agreeable? rajavarunkeerthi

This evening, I was listening to 'oh nenjamE' ithu un ragamE. ..listen to the violins in the prelude wow wow ..coming to the lyrics & tune. IR makes sure the lyrics tightly match the tune. Also, the percussion accent is on every beat/half-beat. (if you know tamil grammar - there is accent on each 'asai' (a unit of sound)). Basically, IR knows tamil 'isai ilakkanam' .
I think these are the reasons, if the lyrics are even moderately good, the song leaves a good impression on the listeners mind.
Also note, he is the only MD who can write, sing and music direct his own songs to top the chartbusters (recently he did lyrics +MDing for pAttu solli and oliyilE therivadhu in azhagi)

Oliyile and Un Kuthama are based on same raga....yet they sound so different and bring out different emotions:-)....Only IR can do that

Let me correct some flaws here and then I will be outta here. :)
Composed some 24 years back.. This is where IR stands out from the rest. Unforgettable tunes...
MSV's songs, KVM's songs, Papanam Sivan's songs and many other songs are even older and still the prefered songs for many.
When will the younger generation ever realize the greatness of this composer!
When HCIRFs realise that there had been great MDs even before IR's era.
Also note, he is the only MD who can write, sing and music direct his own songs to top the chartbusters
T Rajendar immediately comes to mind. Besides all the above he also directed and acted in the song sequences. :)
Oliyile and Un Kuthama are based on same raga....yet they sound so different and bring out different emotions:-)....Only IR can do that
Wrong! There are 100s of same raaga songs that sound so distinct to the untrained ear.

ROTFL,
is there one single T. Rajendar HIT song which he sang, wrote and composed music for ?
Sorry, I can't accept, 'vaadaa en machchi, vengaaya bajji' as valid answers :-)

You must be joking, if you claim ignorance.
Either that or you must be 16 years old. :)
Have you forgotten Thatti paarthen kottangkachi? :)
He has also done several roles, although without singing, for many chartbusters.

ROTFL,
I too reminded of TR when kiru made that statement - but kiru was talking about IR being involved in all the departments and making it a hit song, TR has written and composed some beautiful numbers, But as a Singer, he is a failure, thats what I wanted to state,

Songs of IR that I like:
1. Highly orchestrated: 'Aruna Kirana' or 'Kadhal Oviyum' type songs. I become a HCIRF the moment at once. For all people who claim not to like IR songs because they are old-fashioned, not cool. Listen to these songs.
2. Simple songs: 'Nilave Vaa' or 'Povoma Oorgolam' or 'Vaa Vaa Anbe Anbe' type songs. These are usually based on a raga. Keeravani seems to be a big favorite of IR. However, IR has used all ragas in all flavors. The listener never even knows. I am still finding songs that I have known for a long time that they are based on some raga or the other and I am stunned. This was something MSV was very good at too. However, I have to say I am sick and tired of the same old Mand and other Shankarabharam janya raga based ARR songs. It gets so monotonous. Some of tunes sound very jinglish.
3. Real hep songs: 'Megam kottatum' or 'Oor Orama Aathu pakkam' type songs. These songs are almost sung in all competitions, and there have been many discussions on how the chord progresses and how unconventionally (you can never predict IR) IR writes his bass parts etc etc.
Of course, there are also folk songs, pure carnatic songs, dappanguthu songs, others. The problem with IR is that he has produced so much (I agree there is much material to discard) and only real music fans who know what IR is capable of, undertake the trouble of going through his old albums and enjoy them. Plus, recording is not great and as many have suggested you may need good quality headphones. I will also tell you this. Such a journey is worth undertaking.
On the point where I commented on ARR, I like ARR's commitment to quality, only so many movies a year etc. On the other hand, he has a long way to go. Of course, I know there was whole discussion on quality vs. quantity and how many movies of IR had junk songs etc. etc. etc. Seriously, only a few of ARR songs bear any trace of the truly knowledgeable composer behind them. I am not saying ARR does not know his stuff but he has not crossed the bridge between knowledge and creativity as many times as I would like to see.
All IMHO and sorry if I have offended any HCARR fan here.

Can you all believe that I was hearing a song, just one song from 11AM to 3PM. The song is 'oru kanam oru yugamaaga ...' from 'Naadodi Thendral'.

IMO he has given the greatest "emotional" songs ever in TFM

Hmmmmm... guess not.
Just one last word - once you know the secret of the magic, the awe and enchantment will be gone.
Here is some leisure reading one what was done in one single movie.....

what are facts?
IR has scored music for the most number of movies in TFM.
ARR is the highest paid MD currently in TFM
MSV scored music for Tamil Films long before IR appeared on the scene.
These are examples of facts. Everything else is just opinion. Even the link you gave us for Karnan is just someone's opinion. Purinjathaa??

ROTFL, if somebody appreciates IR it does not mean others are bad. You see me talking about IR here but do you know how many CDs of Vivaldi alone I have (3 by various conductors/different recording quality etc)..?? Leave alone my MSV collection..or even the ARR collection. So please dont start an argument when there is none..Also, people prefer a style of one composer, and even in one composer only certain types of songs..I probably skip 'naan thaan toppu ..meethiyellam doopu' but will repeat listen rAsAvE unnai naan enniththAn..(no not santhanak kARRE even)...
The post I made offers a probably theory why IRs songs could be more memorable comparatively. It is just a theory. Please comment on that.
Also, I have the habit of listening to random IR songs on the net, during periods of boredom or rest, and this 'discovery' process makes me gaga over it and I share it with like-minded people here. If you have something to say, say it politely, but please dont annoy me !!.

AAhhhh!!!! Stop ur pretence people!
When u say IR is good, then u havent compared.
When u say he is The Best, or "This is where IR stands out from the rest", then u have compared. This means IR is better than the rest. This means u r saying IR is better than MSV and ARR and every other MD in the history of TFM.
Even when Bharathiyaar wanted to praise Tamil, he had the humility to say "yaamarintha mozhigalile" rather than "anaithu mozhigalilum"... When u make a sweeping statement like "The Rest" and "The Best", then it is assumed u know all of what makes up the rest and know each and every MD and song in the history of TFM.
If u dont, then dont winch when someone disagrees. Either u need to be prepared to defend ur statement or rephrase it more appropriately.
Asking rhetorical questions in return doesnt make a wrong a right. And neither does going into denial or listing ur CD collection.

Digression (?)
ROTFL, thanks for the link. It is indeed a travesty that Karnan audio cassette (leave alone CD) is not available in a single music store in Madras. Maybe it wasnt even released. Thanks to dhool.com, I recorded the real versions on cassette.
I live in the US now, and I will be extremely grateful to anyone who can point me to a website (or store in/around Chicago, Dallas or Houston) that sells Karnan audio cassette/CD. FYI, the entire dialogue of the movie (including the songs I presume) is available as a cassette in Music World Chennai.
End digression
