KVM has scored some incedible music in Telugu movies -
1.SHANKARABHARANAM (DIR : K.VISHWANATH )
2.SIRIVENNALA ( DIR : K.V)
3. SAPTHAPADHI ( DIR : K.V)
4.SIRI SIRI MOOVAA (DIR : K.V)

All Devar films with MGR were Musiced by KVM and all had excellent songs
On a quick glance, I can see that "Kairaasi" was Musiced by "Govardhan", not by KVM( I think, I am right, anybody with details on this, please )

U can add 'thillana mohanambal' to the list. Most of KVM songs were based on raagas and he did the dilution with a wonderful touch

Thirumaal Perumai had plenty of good songs. Some of these are:
1. Malargaliley pala niram kandein
2. Hari Hari Goakula Ramana unthan thiruvadi saranam Kanna
3. Pachchai maamalai poal meini
4. Kaagai siraginiley Nandalala
5. Goapiyar konjum Ramana, Gopaala Krishna
6. Thirumaal perumaikku nigar yeithu
Unlike the cinema bakthi paadalgal of these days, songs of TP brings out an enormous, inexplicable bakthi feelings. Such were the lyrics, tune and accompanying music.
Aathi Parasakthi had other good songs too:
1. Aathi Parasakthi Aathi Parasakthi
2. Solladi Abirami
3. Azhagaaga kannuku azhagaaga
4. Aayi magamayi
5. Naanatchi seithu varum
6. Aayigiri Nanthini
7. Varugavey varugavey, iraiva yen thalaiva
I was very, very young when I watched this movie in the theatre. Many women in the audience would go into a trance when Padmini started singing Aayi Magamaayi, so much so the management had viboothi on standby, for this song!!!! I remember being terrified when it happened :-))
Such was the power of the situation and music.
I remember that KVM received the National Award for the movie Shankarabaranam. How many other awards has he received?

I agree with Kanchana. Let me begin. The songs of Idhaya Kamalam
are some of the best-ever-made in TFM! KVM probably
did a special job because AVM produced it. Although
the movie is a remake of a Hindi movie (I don't
remember the name) I feel the songs in the Thamizh
version were superior. P Susheela has sung all
songs with a special touch. Kannadhasan has put
down wonderfully simple lyrics. KVM has composed
lilting tunes. Unlike his typical compositions
in which the interludes go astray (Kanchana will
have a lot to say about this) KVM has given
smoothly-flowing interludes for the songs in this
movie. The song unnai kaaNaatha kaNNum kaNNallaa
is a haunting melody. malargaL nanaindhana
paniyaalE became the definition of an early-morning
song; if you haven't seen the song in the movie: KR Vijaya goes
about doing her usual, house-hold work in the
morning, and Ravichandran follows her doing some
stupid things without KRV noticing him. Ramki
forgot to mention the wonderful song, ennadhaan
ragasiyamO idhayaththilE, ninaiththaal enakkE
sirippu varum samayaththilE. Geetanjali, being
in love with Ravichandran, sings this song; but,
Ravichandran, who is in deep sorrow at the loss
of his dear wife, KRV, imagines as if KRV sings
it. It's worth mentioning that except this song,
all the other songs come in flash-backs. For
those who don't know, the story of the movie:
Ravichandran is deeply in love with his young wife,
KRV and she suddenly dies of some strange disease.
Ravichandran is in deep sorrow, reliving his
life with her in flash-backs, and, suddenly,
KRV resurfaces in real-life. Is she someone else?
Perhaps a twin? No! She is indeed Ravichandran's
wife since she seems to know every intimate detail of her
life with Ravichandran. Meedhi kadhaiyai vaNNa
thiraiyil kaaNga!

I used netscape to type something here and when I resized the window, all my text was lost! Too much frustration caused me to postpone my posting but here goes:
Amar & Ramki: Kairaasis MD was Govardhanam. I saw this movie last weekend and I know for sure.
General observations on KVM:
1. KVM had two different types of songs. One had lots of classical touches and the other one would be kinda folksy. It is very clear that he aimed one at the highbrows and the other at the lowbrows. e.g "Maranidhirundhu Paarkkum" and "Thillalangadi Dappangutthu" - both in Thillana Mohanambal. Both had their origins in tradition. His folksy tunes' roots were clearly in TN. I hv observed the same strategy with GR. e.g. "Mullai Malar Mele" and "Pulli Vaikkuran Podiyan Sokkuran" in Utthama Putthiran.
2. When MSV and KVM ruled TFM, you could see that MSV used lot of western instruments e.g. drums. KVM used Indian instruments predominantly. Surprising that even drums didnt play a great role in his creations. As a result, the influence of western music - classical, pop, rock, whatever - was almost non-existent in his music. Even GR had a "Yaaradi Nee Mohini". Or "Ulavum Thendral Kaatrinile" ( rock and western classical influences )
3. Because of point # 2, MSVs music range kinda encompasses KVMs range. Except for the wider repertoire, MSV and KVM belonged to the same music school. It is diificult - at least for me - to hear a new song and say whether it is by MSV or KVM. e.g. "Pattatthu Rani Paarkkum Paarvai" is definitely MSV. "Thol Kanden Thole Kanden" is possible from either.
4. KVM had a loyal asst, Pugazhendi. I believe he contributed a lot to KVMs place in TFM. I beleive he stayed with KVM despite various offers.
I am just adding songs that hv not been mentioned so far:
1. Vettaikkaran
Manjal Mugame Varuga
Medhuva Medhuva Thodalama
Kannanukku Etthanai Kovilo
I dont particularly like any of these. The one I like best is "Unnai Arindhaal". Just mentioning these for the sake of completion.
2. Thiruvilaiyaadal
Isaitthamizh Nee Seidha Arum Saadhanai
Podhigai Malai Ucchiyile Purappadum Thendral
Ondraanavan
Podhigai Malai is a superb song. PBS thool kalappittar. ( BTW, I am bigtime PBS fan. )
Annaiyin Aanai:
Neeye Gadhi Easwari!
When I hear this, I get the same feeling as when I hear say, "Karpagavalli Nin Porpadhangal". Of course, in this category, I rate "Sundari Sowndari Nirandariye" as the best.
3. Adimaip Penn
Emaatraadhe Emaaradhe
4. Iruvar Ullam
Aararo Adi Aararo
One of the best from AL Ragavan.
5. Kumudham
Mama Mama Mama
6. Kungumam
Kungumam Mangalak Kungumam
Whenever I hear this song, oru mangalagaramana atmosphere create aagudhunga. Especially when the line "Rajamaniyin Annai Mugatthil Thigazhum Mangala Kungumam". The cadence is incredible! The voice of Sulamangalam Rajalakshmi is so appropriate for this song.
7. Chinnanjiru Ulagam
Sirippen Sirippen Siritthuk Kondiruppen
Manasirukkanum Manasirukkanum
8. Kaattu Roja
Endha Oor Enbavane
I should also mention my all time favorite from KVM - "Oru Naal Podhuma" Tour de force!

Idhaya Kamalam songs are some of my favorite TFM too esp. malargaL nanaindhana, unnai kaaNaadha kaNNum.
NOV:
Thirumal Perumai also has the ANdAL thiruppaavai song maargazhi thingaL madhi nirai nannaaLaam sung by PS, right? I was listening to MLV's rendition this morning since it's maargazhi maadham now, and remembered this fact. malargaLilae is one of my favorites.
Have fun with your movie marathon--Kadhalikka Naeramillai, Ramu, Idhaya Kamalam.....Can we keep adding to your family's viewing list?
Ramki:
As you said, KVM's gnaanam and execution are unquestionably good; RV has explained KVM's strengths very well. It's my perception that in most of his songs, the transition from prelude to pallavi to interlude to saranams is not seamless/smooth and seems discontinuous. This is less of a negative and more of an executional style. As a kid, I used to identify KVM's songs versus MSV's songs this way, while listening to the radio; of course, there were exceptions to the rule and I was not always right then. Comments from music experts on this observation are welcome, so I can learn more about KVM's style too.
Bhaskar:
I think that is thudi not thudhi, judging from the context where it is an adjective to qualify idai.
Madhan:
neeyae enakku endrum (suddha dhanyaasi ragam?) from Balae Paandiyaa was scored by MSV-TKR. Other hit songs from this movie are: vaazha ninaithaal vaazhalaam, aththikkaai kaai kaai, aadhi manidhan kaadhalukkuppin, naan enna solli vittaen nee yaen mayangugiraai etc.
OK, now for story time...... The movie is iruvar uLLam starring Sivaji & Sarojadevi, directed by Prasad, screenplay-dialogue by kalaignar KaruNaanidhi, and lyrics by Kannadhasan. Music is by KVM, of course. I think this is a screen adaptation of the novel peNN manam by authoress Lakshmi.
The story in a nutshell: the hero is a rich playboy, the heroine is a poor school teacher, hero genuinely falls in love with the heroine, reforms himself, and gets married to her against her will. The heroine detests him since she thinks he is an immoral rake, doesn't believe he is genuine and so their married life stays for appearances only. In time, she realizes he is genuine, and falls in love with her husband. But, his playboy past catches up with him and there's trouble again in paradise. The rest can be seen in a law court.......
The songs:
paravaigaL pala vidham, ovvondrum oru vidham: Sung by TMS, the movie starts with this song as the title music. Shows how the hero flirting with several women and establishes his playboy character.
budhdhi sigaamaNi petra piLLai: Sung by ALR/LRE for MRRadha & TPMuthulakshmi, this funny song is a lullaby sung by the parents of six children. The father is the hero's brother and is a lawyer.
kaNNedhirae thoandrinaaL: Sung by TMS for the hero, when the newly-weds are together after the marriage. The hero does not know the heroine's aversion for him, and is trying to communicate his real feelings to his new bride. Lyrics to note:
kaNNedhirae thoandrinaaL
kani mugaththai kaattinaaL
naer vazhiyil maatrinaaL
naetru varai yaemaatrinaaL
---
ennai avaLidathil tharugiraen
avaL innum ennai yaen veruthu maraigiraaL
idhaya veeNai thoongum poadhu: One of my favorite KVM songs, this song has great lyrics sung with intense feelings by PS. The beautiful veeNai music in the prelude and interludes add to the mood & tone of the song. The heroine is asked to sing a song in her father-in-law's birthday party and this song, which reflects her sadness, cynicism and empty life, is born. Lyrics to note:
idhaya veeNai thoongum poadhu paada mudiyumaa
iraNdu kaNNgaL iraNdu kaatchi kaaNa mudiyumaa
---
manadhai vaiththa iraivan adhil ninaivai vaiththaanae
sila manidharai arindhu koLLum arivai vaiththaanae
arivai vaiththa iraivan maeni azhagai vaiththaanae
azhagu kaNda manidhan peNNai adimai seidhaanae..
adimai seidhaanae
nadhi yengae poagiradhu: TMS/PS. Dream sequence. (This song is extensively re-used in the 1997 movie "Once More" which stars Sivaji-Sarojadevi, and picks up from the iruvar uLLam story. The movie is not good.)
yaen azhudhaai: TMS. One of my favorites more for lyrics than the music. The heroine understands the hero's real feelings and respect for her and sheds tears without any words. The hero does not know this and asks her the reason for her tears--lyrics to note:
yaen azhudhaai yaen azhudhaai
en uyirae yaen azhudhaai
naan azhudhu oaiyndhadharku
nandri sollavoa azhudhaai
----
aana varai solli vittaen
azhudhazhudhu paarththu vittaen
thaai mozhiyil vaarththai illai
vaai mozhikkum valimai illai
kaNNae kaNNae urangaadhae: PS. The heroine sings this while eagerly awaiting the hero's return from his business trip, so she could let him know of her change of heart.
azhagu sirikkindradhu: TMS/PS. Finally, a declaration of real feelings.
*******
Adding more to the list of KVM movies:
Arasa kattaLai, starring MGR, which includes hits like aadi vaa, puththam pudhiya puthagamae, paN paadum paravaiyae.

The last KVM's movie in Tamil as far as I can recall is 'Kadhal kiLigaL' *ind Sivakumar & Rathi. Had a couple of good duets.
Bhaskar: Regarding mella mella arugil vandhu song, "thudi' is more apt here as it means very slim (waist).
Did KMV score music for this song? 'mella, mella mella, endhan mEni nadungudhu mella. Solla solla solla' - a nice melody.

Hi guys,
sorry for joining late in this wonderful discussion.
In my opinion, KVM has produced lot of
great tunes. But his interlude music was not
always up to the mark.
My favorites song of him in the 70s'
padagu padagu asai padagu - Uttaman
Thirumagal thedi vandall - Iravum pagalum
Iravukkum pagalukkum enni enna - Wonderful tune, but interlude music was complete let off.
Kadal enbadu kavidhai pondradhu - Exciting tune, interlude music too
Enna sugam - pallandu valga - What a lovely
tune. But KVM completely spoiled this song in the interlude
Makayyum enna - vasantha maligai - mesmerizing veena piece in the start
Unnidem mayanguren - Idaya kamalam. Great song, great interludes, great lyrics.
I thought hindi version is remade from tamil. I did remember one interview by p.suseela saying that how much lata liked this song, and went on saying she could not do justice to this song in the hindi version. Did a hindi version exist for this song?.
I could also differentiate between MSV and KVM very easily. KVM rarely used drums, or congos in his song.
Though he was great in producing classical based tunes, he was not as versatile as MSV.
I think, that is why, MGR never used him that much outside of devar films.

Keerthi:
Picturization of idhaya veeNai thoongum podhu is aptly understated. All the guests are standing around and the heroine sits on a dais with a veeNai and sings the song. The sadness on her face and the hurt on the hero's face are noteworthy elements of the scene. In the end, she is so choked up with emotion, she does not finish the pallavi line and leaves the room.
The picturization of all the songs in this movie are very simple and direct (slightly atypical for that era, don't you think?)
Another KVM favorite of mine is aNNai Illam with madi meedhu thalai vaiththu & eNNiraNdu padhinaaru vayadhu which I saw for the first time last weekend. Again, I found the picturizations of these songs to be excellent. Sivaji gives an understated acting during both these songs (atypical for him & the era), and the director Madhavan did a good job of making the situations for both these songs very natural.
Ravy:
KVM did score the music for Panamaa Paasamaa with the song you mentioned mella mella mella endhan maeni nadungudhu mella.
Hari:
unnidam mayangugiraen is a wonderful song, but it is not from Idhaya Kamalam. I wonder which movie it's from. (Idhaya Kamalam has a song unnai kaaNaadha kaNNum--did you mean that?)

Ravy KVMs latest tamil film (direct) is 'andha rathirikku saatchiyillai'(*ing Kapildev and Sulakshana). But after this there were some films that were dubbed from telugu like 'isaikku oru kovil'(sumalatha,Somyajalu),'Raaghadevadhai'(Suhasini)

KVM normally give stres to each and every word in the song.
eNNirandu 16 vayathu
madi meethu thalai vaithu
--
engiruntho vanthaan idai saathi naan
Most of the songs I find it to be very slow and clear. Some times those are like vasanam. But all of them are raga based.
njAyiRy enbathu peNNaaka
kattukulE thiruvila kanniponnE manavizaa
This song I like very much because of the music in the middle of the song.

Kanchana - There you go again. Madi meedhu thalai vaiththu and eNNiraNdu padhinaaru vayadhu are my absolute favourites. Does that mean I have to see Annai Illam? Unfortunately I could't get both Ramu and Idhaya Kamalam from my small VDO store and I borrowed Devathai instead! However, I have managed to complete watching Kaathalikka Neramillai.

Bhaskar:
enna appadi kEttutteenga? Indha paadal illaamal
PPP-yaa? Actually, I have very carefully typed
the lyrics in PPP. Let me make some corrections
to what you've typed (it's important to put the
right spaces in order to get the right meaning;
e.g., malaith thaen (honey) and malaiththaen (surprised)). I will only
retype lines that need correction:
Andru unaith thaen ena naan ninaithaen
Andha malaith thaen (honey) ivaLena malaiththaen (Surprised)
PS: Paarthaen Sirithaen Pakkam vara thudiththaen
Andha malaith thaen (honey) ivarena malaiththaen (Surprised)
Kodith thaen ini engaL kudith thaen
Ena oru padith thaen paarvayil kudiththaen
Here kudi in the first line denotes family or kulam; padi
in the second line is a measure of volume.
The meaning: kodiyilirukkum thaen-aip pOndra ivaL
ini engaL kulaththin thaen aavaaL ena avaLai
eNNi naan paarvaiyin moolam oru padi thaen-ai
paruginEn.
Kulirth thaen sindhaamal kaLiththaen
Oru Kulirth thaen sindhaamal kaLiththaen
(kazhiththaen (discarded) and kaLiththaen (enjoyed)
have different meanings.)
Malarth thaen pol naanum malarndhaen
The following 3 lines that you've given:
Eduthaen koduthaen suvaithaen
Eduthaen koduthaen suvaithaen inithaen
Illadha ????? mudithaen
should be rewritten as:
eduththaen kodukkaiyil suvaiththaen
eduththaen kodukkaiyil suvaiththaen
inith thaen illaatha padi kathai mudiththaen
These lines are very subtle. With the spaces clearly
put, you should get the meaning.
P.S: You will enjoy this song only if you read it
in Thamizh. So, see it at PPP:

Here is a KVM song which I like very much because of the lyrics (Vaali) and the music. This song has that "KVM discontinuity" style I'd talked about earlier, but still sounds good. I have not seen the movie Selvam since I was a small kid, so I'm unable to give any context. Lyrics:
ondraa iraNdaa eduthu solla
uLLa uNarchiyai vaarththayil vadiththu solla--eNNam (ondraa)
uyiraa udalaa pirindhu sella
naam pirindhadhu ennaaLum kalandhu koLLa--naan (uyiraa)
nindraal nadandhaal un ninaivu
en ninaivae agandraal un kanavu--kanavu (ondraa)
ninaivum kanavum enakkaaga
en netriyil kungumam unakkaaga (uyiraa)
kungumam nilaikkum kulamagaLae
naan kulavida thudippadhu un nizhalae
nizhalum ninaivum anithiyamae

Ramki:
True, Selvam wasnt really good. But the best part in the movie was SVRangaRao. Many actors excel when they get a good author-backed role. I hv seen only 3 actors who do well despite stupid or insignificant roles viz. SVR, MRRadha and Balraj Sahni. I mean, how did SVR do this role of a father saying "Excellent! Marvellous! Adhaavadhu Pramaadham" well ? And MRRadha hammed to a perfection in many movies. SV Subbaiah and TS Balaiah were also quite capable of doing this but SVS had an intensity in him that hampered his doing light roles.
Sorry about the digression but I couldnt resist. ;-)

Hi guys,
KVM is truly great MD and he and MSV acheived all that they achieved without the traditional hype of today. All the mythological movies had great tunes by MSV like Kandan Karunai, TVchelvar, thiruvilayadal etc. Who can forget tunes like Manam padaithen, cholla cholla inikkuthadaa. His greatness was his willingness to create tunes for pre-written lyrics and all the time he managed to create tunes without the lyricist having to change his lyrics. His music arrangement was a bit of a disappointment at times though.
