I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan -
Thanks for the MM Kreem/aragathamani detail. I would never have guessed. I can still hear his Mazhaiyum Neeye in memory as I type this. His "softer" efforts are definitely pleasing.
Thinthom Thinthom:
I believe I have written about this song - one of my brief takes many moons ago. The opening of the song is also the piece de resistance. VJ lives every note, leading right up to the moment of subjugation, the cry of the heart which breaks into song. The composition itself has MSVs class writ large all over it. Two interesting before and (much) after Thinthom points of comparison would be Mora Saajan from Pakeezah and Ulagengum Nam Veedu from Paththinip Penn.
Ammamma Aasai Pogum Vaegam...The pose, the clothes, and the glamour of lust and wild abandon. The picture is a reprise of the one made famous by Dev Anand and Padma Khanna (and Sivaji and Padma Khanna) from Johnny Mera Naam / Raja. As Salacious as Asha Bhonsle's Husn Ke Lakhon Rang (Do you know the tamizh equivalent?)
Ammamma also has its Appappa symbolism. The "thaer" is surely a phallus by another name. KD does nothing to disguise the "joy ride" thematics (image, action, and speech): Thaer - Pivotal. Naanum Neeyum Sondhangal Kandukkondom Pagaiyali - Pact. Padhai Kandukkondaen Payanam Poga Vaendum - Passion.
An interesting song to ponder this ambiguity within the emancipatory impulse of the song: A heterosexual male fantasy Or A heterosexual female sexual manifesto?
Another racy moment by the same team: Neerada Neram Nalla Neram (Vaira Nenjam)
Ullam Urugadha...Counterpoint. From whore to madonna, from the superficial to the core. And a different sense of Habit.
Thisai Maariya Paravaigal was not a turning point in any radical sense. (Unless you think SLs debut to be a revolution unto itself.) A stir-fry of social reform and romance, the film found itself on not divergent tracks (as the title would have you believe) but rather on those that ran parallel. As parallel as High Priest Hindu Brahminism and Holy Jesus Christianity. Hymn or Homam?
But the poignant moments came rushing, one after the other, incessantly, as though the film had taken it upon itself to put man back in manipulation. Ullam Urugadha is one such hunker down with your hankies from many. (The "conversion" scenes were a bawl-out your eyes highpoint - and full marks to those who could get there with ease.) The song is divine for all that. Ah, the comfort of a certain (musical) conformity!

Saravanan -
I am sure you must have noticed. The exchanges in this thread have become a "two-way," literally: just you and me and what must be considered (by the silent majority?) to be our "interesting" yet trivial pursuits. :-)
So, better buck up. You've got space to fill, and mere one liners with the wrod "interesting" in it just don't (and can't - iru kural has to also double as chorus) cut it any more! :-)
Don't you find a situational/tonal similarity between Thinthom Thinthom and Sogam Thana Raagam (Vasantharaagam)? I listened to the song yesterday after many months and immediately thought of your latest in the chronology. The VJ-MSV brilliance is apparent in both compositions. I look forward to your write-up on this song when you get there. It is another underappreciated msaterpiece.

Naaz,
Give me a few days to get back to reality as I just returned from my vacation. I have a lot to share.

Saravanan, Naaz - re the bewitching [apt word, Sara :) ] song AwArApan BanjArApan, MM Kreem himself, in the Sa Re Ga Ma show on Zee TV, sang it! Sure, I had listened to this number before I heard him sing on ZEE TV, and found it very good, but I was totally captivated only after hearing him sing! It is an extraordinary number indeed. To me, words cannot do justice to that song.
BTW, Sara, is MM Kreem same as Keeravani in Telugu FM? I know he is Maragathamani in TFM.

Naaz, I will (buck up, I mean :))
Yes, 'sogam thaana' shares similarities with thinthom thinthom, and VJ excels as usual in bringing out the agony of the (albeit clichéd) situation- Sudha Chandran being coerced to dance at the villain's den!
Welcome back, Neel! I'm sure you have plenty to share-- did you meet VJ?
M4E, yes, MM Kreem in Hindi, Maragathamani in Tamil, Keeravani in Telugu!

It was an unforgettable vacation for I got to meet with the two people what are the epitome of modesty and simplicity, Mr. and Mrs.Jairam. There is so much I want to write but I don't know where to begin. I will state the events and try to maintain order.
On a Tuesday morning at 10am I arrived at VJ's apartment. The watchman rang the bell for me. The door opened and there was VJ. From that moment on everything that happened still feels unreal. I couldn't believe that it was VJ standing in front of me. Both of them said hello and asked me in. They said they had allotted the whole day to entertain me (what did I do to deserve this), I
was speechless I forget even to thank them. VJ made me coffee and offered southern snacks. I was too shy to eat anything in front of her I barely managed to drink the coffee. Mr.Jairam talked about VJ's music training, the music career that began in Mumbai and how it moved to Chennai. He talked about his education in UK and his training in music (sitar).
VJ asked me about my family and talked to me about several things but I honestly don't remember most of it as it was all feeling like a dream. Also I had wanted to tell her so many things but I just drew a blank. She gave me a huge collection of her devotional songs in various languages, a collection of her pictures spanning decades. She showed me the awards she had received that were simply overflowing the shelves on the wall. She took me to her Pooja area and offered me some prasadam. Let that prasadam blessed by VJ impart some music knowledge and culture in my head. Then she showed the home studio that Mr.Jairam had almost finished building. She then gifted me a kurta set. She kept asking me if she can buy me a shirt and a tie. I just was overwhelmed by emotion I had no idea how to react.
Then we glanced through several of the photo albums containing pictures taken all over the world. And they both proudly showed me the Chronology by Saravanan put nicely in a binder. Afternoon came and they took me to lunch at Woodlands restaurant. We had a nice meal and by then somehow I had managed to start talking a little bit. After lunch they took me to Landmark (a books and music store). I managed to find some rare VJ albums there. We then came back home and talked for a while about how VJ fans come from all over the world and from all walks of life. VJ said how music can unite such diverse people and was wondering why people in our country should fight over their differences.
Time came for me to take leave and they insisted that they will drop at my next destination in Mandhaiveli. They drove me all the way to my friend's house in Mandhaiveli through congested roads undergoing construction. They made sure they dropped me at the right place. I thanked them for everything and we bid goodbye.
During more than half the day I spent with them, not for a second did they make me feel that I was in a new place, that too in a celebrity's residence. It was as though they had known me since I was a child. They showered me with such warmth, comfort and motherly and fatherly love. I still cannot believe that it actually happened.

Neel
That was wonderful! (I am truly envious of all three of you (you know who) who have either seen or spoken to her) Wow, such wonderful hosts they are. I was also pleased to know that they reserved a binder for Saravanan's chronology. Hopefully when it all finishes, she will have material in her hands worth a few books of publishing.
Thanks for sharing your visit to VJ's place. Wonder when my turn is.

Neel, thanks a lot for sharing the precious memories of your meeting with VJ. I am able to visualize everything, including the ever-obliging watchman, the snug inside of the VJ home, their gracious hospitality, Woodlands, the audio section at Landmark, and the crowded lanes of Madhaveli--
Please, at your leisure, share with us a detailed account of your conversation with them- the songs that came up for discussion, the songs that she sang ( And I'm sure she would have sung quite a few!), her thoughts/ memories on MDs/ other singers etc.
I am lost for words when I read what you said about the chronology-- I am humbled.
Truly, VJ is an exceptional artiste, and a wonderful human being. No wonder she has so many loyal fans, for she reciprocates their affection tenfold.

Kaumudi/Saravanan,
You are very welcome. It was my pleasure.
VJ also showed me an album of the paintings and sketches she had done. One of her fans from Chennai called her when I was there and she had me talk to him. He asked for my email address and she promptly read it out from her address book.
I wanted to ask her to sing a few songs but I did not have the courage to ask her. In the course of the conversation she sang few lines of "ammA undhan kaiVaLaiyAi" and got emotional and said that she recorded that song not too long after her mother had passed away. She also sang "kunguma kOlangaL" and a couple of other songs that I can't remember right now. As my dreaminess fades away I will start remembering things more clearly.

Neel D -
Looks like your vacation was momentous and memorable!
Did you take any photos of your meeting? Or record any snippets of the conversation? Any interesting projects she is working on currently? Did you ask her for any old song recordings and media coverage? That would be great to include at the website (did VJ not express her appreciation for your voluntary effort to collect her songs at one source?)
I am happy you had a personal audience with VJ. It is something you will cherish for as long as you live - and that must be gratifying in itself!
