Ilayaraja's Best 10 Albums

Dear TFM Lovers,

I am an Ilayaraja Fan. Here is an sincere attempt to list his "Best 10" albums. Yes -
there are lot of singles outside these top 10 movies, but I think these movies have atleast one "jem" and most of the other songs are above average. One or two may be "below-average", but they are there to fit the movie story line and commercial requirements.

  While it is very difficult to choose 10, your choices of `kadalOrakkavidhaigaL' and `enga ooru pAttukkAran' among top 10 are surprising...
  
  Reasons:
  1. While `kodiyilE' and `adi AthAdi' are great numbers, 'podi nadayA', 'pOguthE', 'dAs,dAs' are average songs and thus reducing the grade of the album overall.
  
  2. `sheNbagamE' is extraordinary, no doubt (i.e. the Asha version...I fail to understand why IR gave that beauty to Mano, he himself could have sung for gramarajan if he felt it was an insult to make SPB or KJY sing for him). madhura marikkozhundhu is good despite Mano. jinjanakku, enga ooru pAttukkAran are average numbers. Overall the album won't go beyond first class (not outstanding or distinction...maths'la 100% but english'la pass mark'ngaRa mAdhiri)

  sriram, your albums especially in the second list should be every good music listener's dream collection.
  Being an ardent Kamal/rajini/IR fan Iam preparing a list which the collectors can make use of.
  My rule : Atleast 3 or more songs should be a marvel to qualify the list.(Iam listing only the left out albums which deserve to be included)
  Kamal films
  1. sattam enkaiyil = ore idam, sorgam madhuvile, aazhakadalil
  2. aval appadi thaan -uravugal thodargathai, vaazhkai odam sella, panneer pushpangale
  3. kalyanaraaman -kaadhal deepamondru, malargalil aadum, ninaithaal inikkum
  4. uyarndha ullam - kaalai thenral, enge en jeevane, vandhaal mahalakshmiye
  5. tik tik tik - idhu oru nilaakaalam, poo malarnthida, netru indha neram
  6. kaadhal parisu- kaadhal maharani, koo koo enru, hey unnai thaane, puraakale, kaagidha poo
  7. vikram - vanithamani, vikram, meendum meendum, en jodi, sippikkul oru muthu

  It is a testament to Illayaraja's versatility and his prolificness that we have so much variation in everyone's top "10". My 10 would be :(in no particular order)
  
  Jhonny, Nizhalgal, Nenjathai Killathe, Kazhugu, Panner Pushpangal, Mouna Ragam, Thanga Magan, Netrikann, Agni Naksathram, Ninaivellam Nithya

  I have been reading this forum for many years. I can tell you ..all IR fans seem to have a consensus on Johnny. Surely 1 first in top 10 or atleast the top 3.

  -Asaya kathula thoodhu vittu (SP Shailaja)
  -kAtRil endhan geetham (SJ)
  -seno rita, i love you (SPB)
  
  Each song had a different singer, different rhythm pattern and arrangement(some of them altogether new to TFM), decent lyrics (except the first two lines of SPB song), excellent
  preludes and interludes...one of the richest ever musicals in TFM, IMHO...

  You guys heard too few telugu albums :)
  
  Abhinandana is an alltime classic..
  In those lines, there are tons of other films in which each and every song is a masterpiece..
  Sitara, Geetanjali, Anveshana, Maharshi, Nireekshana, Preminchu pelladu, Siva, Swarna kamalam... are some of them.
  Bobbiliraja is commercial hit, but surely not a contender.

  You probably missed the ":)" in my msg.
  I do know enough about him to claim that he composed for 100+ original telugu films.
  Any way, the intent here is not to brag how much you and I know about IR.
  My purpose was to mention that IR did a lot better work in several other Telugu films than the ones you mentioned in the list.

  it's so damn difficult to come out with a TOP 10 ,everytime a list is made some album pops up saying i deserve to be there,so i give up.IR is just great.
