Will, what about the music in the film? (this is newtfmpage)

Geeth,
Sorry, I really forgot!
Well, Illayaraja had done a commendable job in the BGM of the film, for which he had been so well known for. He has exploited the usage of silence really well. Full marks to him for his work on BGM.
As regards the songs, there really hadn't been much oppurtunity provided by Bala to Illayaraja in this film. But, still, he had done a great job in the song "Illangaathu Veesuthey" - Nice choice of the male voice too.
But, as far as the other songs were concerned, they were a bit disappointing. It was the same Illayaraja who scored the song "Chinna thaayaval" in Thalapathi - almost same mood as some songs in this film. But, of course, it all lies in the ability of the director to extract songs from the music director. In this criteria too, Bala doesn't even come nearer to directors like Sridhar, K.Balachander, Manirathnam, Shankar, etc.
Thanks GEETH for reminding me. :D
Waiting for more comments...

Dear Will
Your detailed criticism has come at the fag end.
Everyone is tired of talking about this run of the mill film. I appreciate your observation about Bala "First of all, I shun the very idea of the director Bala's self-escalating his directorship."
Even great directors were humble when criticised.
But Bala jumped a lot against Sun TV. But for Vikram's sensitive acting this picture would have been a flop. There is no entertainment value in the film.

Will,
*"Don't worry about perfectionism. You will never achieve it"....
+ nice point but it applies to all Directors like MR,KB, Sridhar, Shankar.
well i dont know any of the films directed by KB but i do know a good no,. of stage dramas captured in celluloid.
MR is void if there r no newspapers/ media news. he is a teh best in twisitng history as he pleases and gets thro with a clean chit. hmmm
Sridhar once again a driector of dramatic subjects...
Shankar ? wat nonsense r u talking abt ?
*first thing you note is the vulgarity depicted in the film....
+ where come u started inventing things? may be ur mentioning violence! wat to do- the violence was introduced to tamil films by MR, Kamal and shankar and Bala had gone a bit far in taht area thats all.
*women being beated thrice in the movie...
+ i guess u happened to close ur eyes when Arjun slaps madhubala in GM, When pankaj kapoor slaps his sister in Roja, When kamal slaps revathi in Punnagai mannan. [ i hav given one example each frm the films of ur fav Directos. can giv more if think abt it] Well abt sridhar iam not much knowledgable cos ive watched very few movies by him and dont remember much. and all the instances ive mentioned were serious instances while in PM the whole sequence was made to enhance comedy effect. as of beating/ slaping women iam agianst it but all our heroines happen to love the heroes only after they get a nice salp across their face which is utterly nonsense.
*film has absolutely no story line at all!...
+ who gav u the idea that films need a story line at all? many world classics like bicycle thieves, roshoman etc., doesnt hav a definite storyline. u can always comment upon them as well ' a man needsa bicycle to work, tries to steal one, gets caught, gets thrashed up, cries aloud - That is the story? Well, again!
*not to mention about the screenplay...
+ ive got everything to mention abt screenplay abt PM. if u hav no comments abt janakraj a tamil josiar leading his life at a terror filled state like kashmir in Roja or a Terrorist who studied at coimbatore speaking tamil [ the hindi version was worser]. or if u hav no comments upon sethupathi getting into airport runway with a jeep and after killing his son gets away colly to hongkong [ or is it Australia] in Indian.then i dont notice any flaws in PM screenplay.
*How did Laila and Surya start loving each other?
+ isnt it funny that when we had no questions asked when Nirosha says I love u to karthick in Agninatchatram or Shobana loving RK after seeing him doing a gruesome murder we hav all sorts of questions like this!
*And, finally, people are talking about excellent characterisation. This is agreeable to a certain extent, but still, this could be done with a "little" bit of imagination or by actually visitng places like lunatic asylum, or even some really OLD villages or the like places, watching many people there, merging their characters and going on from there.
+ Exactly this is wat we call homework and a Directors potential of keen observation over the society. thank god u didnt ponder upon teh question often asked lie mwhy did sithan behaved like that.
* the ratings
+ the people and almost all magazines like Anadavkatan, kumudam, kalki hav given 5*s for the movie. even a literary magazine like theeranadhi has applauded the movie. so we over here care a damn abt ur ratings.
*Bala doesn't even come nearer to directors like Sridhar, K.Balachander, Manirathnam, Shankar, etc.
+ yes i do agree with this. he has gone ahead frm these crap directors and drawing a path for parallel cinema in line of Balumahendra, rudraiyya, john abraham, mahendran etc.,

rajasaranam,
while i do agree with you about ur reply to Will, i have two points to dispute with yours.
1) In non-relative term(i.e. without comparing with other directors and/or films), if we see the movie, the development of love between surya and laila is crappy, comparable to the a junk run-of-the-mill-masala-thamizh movie. That too when lot of things are being raved about the film and the director.
Also, to some extent, the reason for vikram(siththan) being "animal-like" character is not depicted (even implicitly we could not make out why and how vikram behaves so).
2)
>>>>>>>>>
yes i do agree with this. he has gone ahead frm these crap directors
>>>>>>>>>
you mean those directors as craps esp. sridhar and K.B? Just to defend bala? You could have avoided such a unfounded sweeping statements esp. on those two greats. Even i have many reservations about K.B. but wouldn't make such statements against him.
To me the movie is good, even though doesn't have a firm story; the characterisation is good. But doesn't come to the level of a udhirippookkaL or avaL appadiththaan.

Nice debate.
But dont think too much into the 'love' that developed b/ween Surya & Laila - going by Laila's characterisation, I didnt get the impression that she was seriously in love with Surya, just an affectionate relationship.......there are lots of gals like that in real world :)

nope,
if it were "just an affection" the awesome effect she shows at the death of surya is then too much for it. if it were "just an affection" she(that character) would have shown as much as what sangeetha(ganja lady) shows in that same scene.

Kupps,
ive already answered the question earlier to some other person regarding the behavior of sithan. well i repeat it again in a more elaborate manner for ur convinience.
the creator Bala never came up with a story to tell us. he shud ve churned out a character in his mind with animalistic behaviour. i remember an interview in kumudam where he said the ' ive unleashed the animal within me in this movie'. to an extent this a format of film making where the director decides upon the character first then builds upon the plot [ this is usually done for all rajini/ mgr movies :-)].
the character sithan is almost a state of stone age man. but to giv a convincing tale for such a character bala shud ve decided upon a vettiyan who is the most ignored by the society and lives at a graveyard who has very little connection with the day to day society. there comes the difference betn european/american audience and indian audience. if the movie was made there the plot cud hav been something like time machine and a person getting here frm that time and experimenting how he interacted with this society.
after all sithan is jus a fictional character with animalistic behaviour who interated with civilised society and we need not ponder over that IMO. enjoy the movie thats all. cos nobody ever asked why anthony hopkins behaved like that in 'silence of the lambs' . we too need not ask that question.
KB hmmmm... i agree totally with pamaran when he asked KB in kumudam bagiranga kadithangal ' ivalo naal nalla nalla nadangangal paarthom, sari eppa padam edukka poringa veedu madri'
Sridhar.. was no great director either. i agree that these two people experimented a lot with human emotions and feelings and relationships. but all this cud ve been done well within the framework of a stageplay. cinema is a audio visual medium and we dont need any stage plays here.

kupps,
oops i left out the laila-surya episode. jus ignore that. cos bala has time and again stressed upon the point that this is pucca commercial movie :-). while laila's reaction over suryas death is discussed over here. u wud hav noticed her hysterical nature all over the film. getting excited too fast. and if u had felt the essence of such type of females u wud not ask such a question.

Kupps,
uthiripookal by mahendran was a class movie.
aval appadithaan was it by KB? well i liked the movie neway.

aval appadithaan was by Rudraiya. I believe he only made two movies. The second one, if I am not mistaken was 'gramaththu athyaayam' with the song 'aaththu mettula oru paattu ketkuthu'.
Just the fact it is geting such strong criticism and such strong praise at the same time means that Pithmagan is a great movie that has inspired people to both extremes. As for it not having any entertainment value, please don't despair - it has already been declared a box office smash hit.
I cannot fathom how Will can castigate Bala for vulgarity while hailing Shankar as a great director. Has he seen Boys yet? Of for that matter does he remember the 'mullu theriyutha?' scene from Gentleman?
How do you spell hypocrit?
